Two Smithsonian articles that had me riveted

First, the rather incredible tale of six members of a Russian family who lived for decades under the most primitive conditions, in total isolation in the Siberian forest, 150 miles from the nearest human settlement. The end of the article is the most incredible of all.

Cut off from all human contact

And this longer piece about the 9,000-year-old bones of Kennewick Man. Amazing what scientists were able to learn about his life by studying his bones. (Did you know, for instance, that our bones reveal what our diet was like during their development?) Equally amazing, but appalling, was what the scientists had to go through to get permission from the Army Corps of Engineers to study the bones for a limited time. A fascinating read.
