Update on my granddaughter (she's fine).

As many of you know, my granddaughter was in a terrible car crash three years ago in which a passenger died and the driver was left paralyzed. Both of Lizzie's femurs were broken, and she had several other injuries.

She has recovered well, and has been able to resume snowboarding and wakeboarding. But this summer she was plagued by pain in one of her knees, and she could tell by an identifiable bulge under the skin that a screw had become dislodged.

So yesterday she had surgery to remove it. Turned out there were two screws banging round in there. They gave them to her after the surgery, and we were all startled to see them. They are 3" long!! I never expected they would be that big.

I'm bringing lunch to her tomorrow (curried egg salad sandwiches and Moroccan spiced chick pea soup, for all you foodies) and a few treats I bought to amuse her during her recovery. One of these is the Nail Magic product recommended here by our Jodi. (Thanks, Jodi!)

Wow!

so glad she got that stuff taken care of.

When a colleague had a similar experience after bunion surgery, she laughed to see the description of the corrective procedure:

"hardware removal".

Thanks, everybody! Grandma thinks she's cute too!! Thank goodness for Skype. I have no idea why we didn't get everybody hooked up before? Duh. The recipe I use for Wacky Cake is a little different and makes an 8-inch square cake. It's also a great recipe for a 7-year old to learn how to make a cake. I use coconut oil instead of vegetable oil or melted butter. Omit the cocoa powder and add 1/2 t. Penzey's Cake Spice (or pumpkin pie or apple pie spices, or a mix of cinnamon and nutmeg) for Spice Cake. WACKY CAKE 1-1/2 c. flour (I use soft white whole wheat flour or spelt) 1 t. soda 1/2 t. salt 3 T. cocoa powder (can omit) 1 T. vinegar 2 t. vanilla 5 T. butter, melted (I use coconut oil.) 2/3 c. honey (I use low-glycemic agave nectar) 1/3 c. cold water. Mix ingredients in an 8" square pan in this order: Combine all dry ingredients and mix well. Make 3 holes evenly spaced apart in dry ingredients. In the first hole, put vinegar, in second hole the vanilla, and in the third hole place the melted fat. Mix the honey and water together and pour over all the ingredients in the pan. With a dinner fork, mix well (be sure there are no dry ingredients remaining in the corners. Bake in a 325 degree F oven for 30-35 minutes. You can also mix the ingredients in a bowl, then add to the pan and bake. ---------------------------------------------------- SPECIAL CEREAL TREATS (source: Beyond the Bowl - by Debby Maugans) 10 ounces Peppermint Patties, Andes Mints or bite-size 3 Musketeers candies 3 T. butter or margarine (I use coconut oil) 4 c. Rice Krispies 1. Unwrap the candies and place in a large glass bowl. Add the fat. Microwave on HIGH for 2-3 minutes, or until melted, stirring after 1-1/2 minutes and then every 30 seconds. Stir in the cereal. 2. To make shapes or bars, press the mixture into an 8- or 9-inch square baking pan coated with cooking spray. Chill until firm. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters or cut into 12 bars. To make holiday egg nests, coat your hands with cooking spray and shape into 16 (3-inch) nests on a platter; let cool. Fill with jelly beans or other small candies. To make ice cream cups, spoon the mixture evenly into 14 (2-1/2") muffin cups coated with cooking spray; coat your hands with cooking spray and press the mixture firmly to the bottom and sides of the cups. Let cool; remove from the cups and fill with ice cream or other goodies. Store these treats in the refrigerator. -------------------------------------------------- Check Duncan Hines cake mixes, I believe some of them are vegan, so they won't contain dairy or eggs - check lable. 1 cake mix, any flavor 10-ounces soda/pop (any brand, NOT diet) Mix together. Pour into greased baking pan and bake according to package directions. Thank you all for the kind words--I'm beaming ear-to-ear! I've been digging through boxes and boxes of files and paperwork looking for specific information. I'll post that Wednesday. Meanwhile, here are some answers I can give without referencing anything: The fireplace is full masonry. The stones you see are 6 inch thick granite; the hearthstone is also a granite slab. The stones were ordered split faced. There is definitely mortar holding the stones, but it is recessed about 1 inch giving the fireplace a dry-stacked look. You can also see that the stones are quite close together, further emphasizing the dry-stack look. Overall dimensions are 9 ft high by 7 ft wide with a 1 ft high hearth. The opening is 40 in wide by 38 in high and shallow, like a Rumford fireplace. It sits in a 3 ft deep bump-out and is surrounded by casement windows. As soon as I take updated pictures of my kitchen and breakfast room, I will finally post them in the finished kitchens blog. Tonight is crazy here, but I'll definitely try to answer more questions tomorrow.

Yikes! I am sorry she had to go through more surgery, but she is so lucky to be alive. I hope her recuperation is fast and easy, and I will remember her in my prayers.

Good on her recovery~~I am am surprised she could have 3" nails banging around in a knee, it must have been very painful. I am always amazed at what medical things they can do for us now days. Soon she will be up and running around pain free amazing huh??

Glad to hear she's been 'repaired'. How long is the recovery period? She's probably going to be bored silly if she has to stay inactive for long.

That's good to hear of her continued recovery and that she's so active, Susan. I could picture her clinking and rattling when she moved :-)
That's cool that they gave them to her to keep.

You're a fantastic grandma, she'll love your time with her, and the goodies! I do have a tough time picturing you with a grand-daughter that old though .

Oh that's great - no more loose screws. What's the recuperation like - are her activities restricted? Will she be able to ski and snowboard this winter? Oh even more important - when will she be allowed to drive again? Lizzie such an active person I sure hope she's back to normal soon.

I'm sure she'll be happy to see you tomorrow.

Sorry she had to have additional surgery, but very glad to know she is doing well. How nice that she has a grandmother who brings gourmet goodies!

So the screws aren't needed any more? The bone has healed? Wow.

What a frightening accident. I am so glad she is okay and doing so well.

Well, it's probably not that simple. I know she has a titanium rod in each leg. As far as the screws go, the surgeon said he'll see how she does over the next few months. I'll find out tomorrow about the recovery period.

As we speak, she's lining up a movie for us to watch together. :-)

Yikes! Two 3" screws bumpin' around in her knee? I can't imagine the screws in my neck working loose. gee, sumptin' else to worry about LOL

Sounds like she is taking it all in stride though. Hope she likes her Nail Magic.

I spent a great afternoon with her today. We ate too much lunch, talked, watched a movie (Pitch Perfect), and had fresh pineapple for dessert. She expects to go back to work Friday or Saturday. Pretty amazing.
