Our guests - let's share pictures (pics heavy)
Comments (29)Terrene, thanks! With the hummer picture I had a shutter speed of 1/400 sec. I had another pic with only 1/160 sec and the wings were moving so fast that they were just blur and barely visible. They are fast little buggers. If you have bright enough light outside or a camera that lets you change the shutter speed, aperature, or iso it makes it easier. If I change one of those settings the camera will adjust the others to make sure it is exposed properly. I use a Canon S3 IS and I don't really ever use the auto settings. With the hummers since they move around a lot and there isn't much time to even focus with auto-focus I sometimes just focus on the flower they are favoring and wait for them to come back to finish the shot. I also like to use the rapid fire burst setting where you hold down the shutter button and it takes several pictures quickly in a row. Then I delete most of the pictures and only keep the best. Many of my bird pictures are actually taken through a dirty window or screen because they seem to only come out after I have gone inside. They also like to seem to wait until I am washing dishes at the sink just to see how fast I can dry my hands and grab the binoculars or camera. Trying to use the auto-focus through a window can be frustrating, any little spot on the glass throws it off....See MoreHappy New Year!! Let's share our kitchen-related NY's resolutions
Comments (21)Congratulations, Donnakay!! I resolve to stop waiting for stuff to arrive and to actually have a kitchen. I plan (but not so strong as resolve) to have bi-weekly dinners for family and friends ostensibly for conviviality and to nurture relationships, but also to experiment on them as I learn to do all kinds of things with my gonzo new appliances that were just not possible with the half dead old kitchen. Cat_Mom, I had the whole recipe problem until one day I decided I'd just had it with the multiple pages of notepad paper with family recipes, and the clipped outs, and dumped them all on my desk. Turned on the TV to interesting but not very visual entertainment, and didn't get my desk back until I'd typed my way through the lot. My recipes directory as all kinds of sub-directories like a cookbook but with my own kind of categories. It makes it SO easy. I do print out ones that need specific following, and keep the print-outs in a basket in the kitchen, where they're handy to give away to those who ask, or to reuse. But when I'm planning, making shopping lists, etc., or when one gets just too grotty, I can print out a new one. I highly recommend this!! In fact, I also resolve to type up recipes that I like that are in books, because I can't always find the right one. And since I use them as a starting point usually, remembering the outcome doesn't always help (as in the bread pudding recipe didn't call for poppy seeds...so which one was it now?)...See MoreLet's try this again...Finished Kitchen Pics
Comments (9)sylace, I LOVE your Cumaru floor so much! Thank you for sharing your beautiful kitchen. I don't have any advice on a backsplace but if others do, I can give opinions on what I like that they show you. What width are your beautiful floors? I just love how you mixed dark and light stains making your kitchen not only beautiful but so interesting and one that is warm and inviting....See MoreLurker sharing pics of our kitchen that you helped build!
Comments (10)Ok, here are the details! Countertops are Verde Peacock (I LOVE it!) which we ran into the bottom of the garden window. Cabinets are Brandywine stain, custom-built. The bottom cabinets have pull-outs, as does the large pantry. Everything has Blu-motion. Flooring is Columbia Laminate Traditional Clicette Maryland Cherry Burgundy ordered through iFloor. Floor Muffler underneath. The lighting was done by Lamps Plus The faucet is Hamat from Ira Wood The sink is Kindred, also from Ira Wood (this is probably my least favorite item -- I love the size, but food doesn't run to the single drain garbage disposal, so I have to "chase it" with the faucet). And also, no air-gap...we have not had any issues with doing it this way. The wine fridge is Magic Chef - this is a great item, but we're having trouble with water dripping from somewhere underneath. The refrigerator is Maytag, the stove and microwave Kitchen Aid, and the dishwasher is Whirlpool. I'm happy with all of them. Did I miss anything?...See Moredebo_2006
