Still raining, but wind stopped hours ago.

Emergency vehicles going down the street through the night.

But, we have electricity, heat and no water damage.

Oh that is wonderful Monica. I just saw the news of all the devastation in NYC and the whole surrounding area. Truly a heartbreaking scene.
So glad the worse is over, now the cleanup can begin,

Couple of things about this... Nothing will help a baby "sleep through the night" except maturity. Giving them cereal to try to do this is a well-worn wive's tale. Solids are discouraged by the AAP before six months because avoiding them decreases the incidence of allergies. Babies have very sensitive GI tracts. They're not meant to eat solids this early. As someone already mentioned, give solids before they're ready and sometimes this can backfire, cause GI upset/gas/hard stools and they (and you) will be up more. (But with number one child, I tried it early anyway. Didn't do a darn thing.) Babies wake a lot during the first months/year because of many things...First, their sleep cycles are not like adults (takes years to get to that point). Their's last only 45 minutes long. And "sleeping through the night", MEDICALLY-speaking is considered a single five hour stretch. So if you put Junior down at ten, and he sleeps until 3am, THAT is considered sleeping through the night. And it can be YEARS before you see them do the 8-10 hour thing (and even then, they don't necessarily do it consistantly..might do it one night and then won't again for weeks...). Every child is different in this area. (Some do it very early, but I always tell new moms, don't count on it.) Growth spurts will wake them (they'll want to eat more)..teething...gas or GI discomfort..something you ate (if you're breastfeeding)..reflux...illness...and all of the developmental leaps they go through. If they are about to 'do' something new, THAT will also inevitably increase night-waking. This would be things like rolling over, sitting up, crawling, standing/walking..language development, you name it. (*If you watch them closely, you might see them acting some of this out in their sleep.) Too much stimulation during the day (like lots of family activity)..changes in their routine because of other family needs (like having them out during naptime). Basically you name it, it can cause them to wake up. And if it's not one thing, it's another..My 7 month old ds started to crawl, a few days later pulled himself, caught his sister's mild cold, and just cut two teeth..All in a two week period! Lemme tell you, we've had a lot of late-night partying these past couple of weeks! LOL! And it will end when he's done with it. So, sometimes it can be more than one thing going on at the same time. With two kids, this is my only advice about sleep. You can make it conducive for baby to sleep, but you can't MAKE EM sleep. A calming routine, a calm household, a warm bath, cuddling, eating, rocking (whatever) can lull him down IF he's ready to go. If they don't want to go, ain't going to happen. Not like they have a sleep switch (and trust me, if they have one, I would've found it! I looked! LOL!). That's the bad news (if there's any bad news with babies). The GOOD news is that this time period doesn't last forever. Blink, and they're crawling. Blink twice and they're walking. Blink several more times and they're riding a tricycle and sleeping like a log. That first year goes by in a flash...but yes, you will have some year-long nights. And then all of a sudden it hits you that your 'baby' is not a baby anymore..they're a KID. Running, climbing, laughing, talking up a storm, playing...And then something weird happens. The woman that wished that her baby would go to sleep, now wonders where her baby went? And would he/she please slow down enough for a lap cuddle? :)) I'm 40 years old and this is my last baby. Although the sleep deprivation is really kicking my behind, I'm ever mindful that I'm not going to do this again. And considering that my first baby is going to start kindergarten in the Fall (how did THAT happen so fast??), I already know how quickly this part of motherhood is over...The baby that woke up every two hours for almost a YEAR (I'm not kidding), and currently sleeps like a rock, came up to me the other night and said "Mom, when will it OFFICIALLY be my bedtime?" I told her and she said "fine, thanks for letting me know"..and trotted upstairs, got into bed, snuggled down and went to sleep (She turns five in March). My how things change! LOL! So hang in there ladies, you'll do fine whether or not they sleep when you want them to. And cherish the baby time. It's amazingly fleeting...

What a delightful rendition ...... ;-) It's been awhile since I've had a crowd in. Take Mario Batali's advice and wear Crock's, and my advice -- do as much ahead as possible. We had our low-keyed Christmas and our granddaughter's 18th birthday celebration in Tennessee. Left on Friday and got back last night to 13-inchs of snow, and wonderful neighbors who had our drive cleared by the time we got back. I think we'll be clearing their drive the rest of the winter to pay them back :-). Our son has the flu, so we'll hopefully see him for New Year's Day and hold off on Christmas Dinner until then. Since we'll be free on Christmas Day, we'll volunteer at the annual FREE Christmas Dinner a friend of my parents has done for the community for 30-years, and deliver meals to shut-ins. With all this snow, there is sure to be more requests for deliveries than normal. You just never know how things will turn out, do you :?) Merry Christmas everyone. -Grainlady

Okay I am going to try and answer all the questions I have been asked. Daisy does stay in a crate during the day as my husband and I both work full time. She is not holding herself throughout the day. I don't allow her a lot of water in the morning and I take her out 2 to 3 times before I leave. She is not on a leash, none of out dogs were, but she has a designated "potty" area. When she wakes me up at night we go to teh door directly and to the potty spot. Once she is done, I tell her its time to go back to bed. She has actually improved on getting in the crate at night and not throwing a huge fit. Her Crate is in our room and its not a big one its actually the smallest wired crate I have seen but she has enough room for a small cushion to lay on and room to move around with her toys , and its in our room. The thing of trying to ignore her is a great idea but she will pee in her crate and that is what I am trying so hard to avoid. Also I have a 5 year old dog and when she throws a fit he gets restless then nobody sleeps : ) . She actually didn't wake me up until 4am today and I was so excited but then I found evidence that she potty in the crate I don't thik that was from yesterday unless my husband missed it which is possible. When she does pee in there I try to clean and wash everything in hopes she won't smell it and do it again. Is there anything to help with the odor?? any thoughts. So we are being patient and trying to do what we can, I may try the leash idea, that is a good one. Now Prairie Love you asked me about the Parvo. You all have NO idea what I have gone through. I had NO clue when I picked my precious baby out that she had Parvo. We found out the Sunday after we got her on Wed. She was so sick. I did call the humane society and to my suprise found out 2 days late that they knew on Saturday. I went straight to a board member with my concerns. Its been a huge ordeal but they are working on it and investigating and having a special session to keep this from happening again. I am very aware of how serious it is now, as all of her litter mates lost their lives due to it. Another thing I want to ask you all about. They made me have her fixed before I could take her home, yes at 8weeks of age. Would this affect anything with her. I need to ask my vet. We finally have enough of a "sample" to take in now.. whoo what a chore. Thank you all for your ideas, I love having animal lovers to talk to. Now if I can get my 5 year old to love her as much as her daddy and I do : ) !

OK, my advice is going to be a bit different than some of the others, but you have to figure out what works for you and your dog. When our dog was a pup we put her crate downstairs in the main living area. Our bedrooms are upstairs. I did this so that we would not wake up and be tempted to positively reinforce crying or whining unless it was loud enough to really mean something. I have a pug, and they have small bladders, so in the beginning I set my alarm for 2:00 am and got up to let her out to potty ONLY. No play, no cuddling, etc. Just potty, back to crate with a small treat. This method worked wonders. She only cried a bit for two nights. After that, she learned to cry only when she had to go and we were able to move the crate into DS's room at night. Now that she is trained she sleeps in DS's bed. I think if you put the crate in your room and speak to the puppy or pet him when he cries, that is still reinforcing the behavior and you are likely to have to deal with it longer. And quirkyquerces is, of course, right about making the crate Disneyland. We taught our dog the "crate" command by tossing her a treat every time she went in. Being a food-driven pug, she learned to zoom for that crate pretty quick. She still does it and it cracks up our friends. Just don't put lots of gooey treats in at night or you may find a mess in the morning. Perhaps a safe, tasty chewy of some kind, like a nylabone, to keep her occupied? Also, it sounds like your crate is a too big for a pup. They feel more secure in a smaller space and they are less likely to soil a smaller crate as well. A rule of thumb is that it should only be large enough for them to stand up, lie down and turn around fully. You can decrease the size temporarily by putting a wooden box in the back of the crate to take up some of the space. Good luck!

Thank goodness--glad to hear you're okay Monica.

We, too, did fine. Just checked outside, a few tiny little branches off the trees, but no damage, our power stayed on (amazing, since ours goes off at the drop of a hat out in the country here)

But there are so many in this state who have not fared as well. It's going to be a long recouperation for New Jersey--and the other states that have been affected. Hope the others in the path check in.

When we went to bed last night we were feeling lucky- we still had power but the winds were howling. This morning we woke to find a tree had uprooted and come down on the house - it's laying across the pergola and I think the house itself is OK. A neighbor's pine tree crashed through our fence and is laying across the back yard - but it missed our cedar shed. One of our Yoshino cedars is leaning slightly but since it's next to our neighbor's driveway we might not be able to stake it.

We called our tree guy and he'll be out today to give us a damage estimate.

But I still feel incredibly lucky. It could have been so much worse. We were spared.

I'm so glad y'all are ok. I too hope more check in.

(Middle Tennessee here, so I'm really only getting gusty winds, not snow or the water of the storm)

Oh, Mare--I'm so sorry to hear you had even that much damage--but know what you mean about feeling lucky in spite of it. Hope things are quickly taken care of for you. Good luck.

Good Morning! Last night was not nice, but we survived with no damage...and amazingly no loss of power. Our guardian angel did a good job of protecting us. My heart goes out to those who are suffering through this horrible storm.

That's great news! For both Monica and Maire_Cate. We are still getting hammered with wind and rain in Ohio. Downtown Cleveland on the lake shore there are waves hitting the breakwall at Lakeshore Blvd. over 20' high, very unusual here. As of yesterday at about 12:15 when I put the rain gauge back out, we got 2" of rain, but most likely more with the rain blowing like it is. They are saying over 4" + about 2" more from the system that was moving east and ran into Sandy.

As our sump pump was pumping water up beside the garage last night, (DH thinks the drain to the storm sewer is blocked) DH went to Lowes and got a submersion pump to help keep up with the ground water. He ran a hose out to the driveway, and hooked up the new pump in addition to the sump pump. We are still ahead of the game! Last night when he went out to the shed to get extra hose, the yard was not squishy wet, so that was good. I'm sure it is squishy wet now. The power went out twice this morning since 8 for a few minutes and came back on. We have two generators, and probably 6 full gas cans.

Jasdip, yes Jannie is in NYC, on the west side. I hope she can check in. My prayers are with everyone.

Maire, sorry for the damage to your place. Glad nothing landed on your head. There were two deaths from trees falling in PA.

Lots of branches and sticks all over the lawn, but I have power. It was out for 3.5 hours yesterday and I was surprised when it came back on.

I've been calling my mom's house and she does not answer. Her power must be out. The portable phones do not ring without power and I think she cannot hear the corded phone. I've been trying her cell but she probably can't hear that either. I'll drive over soon to check on her. I'll try to get her to come back to my house but she probably won't. She is so darn stubborn.

Happy to hear everyone is safe.

We are being pounded by 40 plus mph wind gusts right now and supposed to get worse during the day. So far no trees down on my street that I can see. All the streets around here are lined with big old trees.

Prayers go out to those that didn't fare to well in this storm.

I'm so happy to hear from all of you and will be checking this post for others to check in when they can. I was thinking of you while I was awake watching the storm on TV during the night. Thank heavens you are safe and also that it was only a Category 1!

Thanks everyone. We were lucky. Our tree guy just left and there is good news - if there's any damage to the house it's minimal and he told us that the tree would have eventually died since he discovered a girdling root just beneath the soil.

Our neighbor came out when he saw us in the backyard and he told the arborist to give him the bill for his pine tree that came down in our yard. I'm so glad I got to speak with him because I told him that his tree bent our fence and also smashed our 30 foot Edith Brogue Southen Magnolia to the ground. You could barely see any of it.

Our town is fairly old, Europeans settled here in the 1680's and there are beautiful old trees along the streets. The arborist told us that he's already checked homes where trees had toppled onto the roofs.

I am so thankful that our place is secure. The photos of the damage along the coastline is chilling.

Gov. Christie said that last year 1 million people lost power last year in NJ from Hurricane Irene. This storm has left 2.4 million without electricity.

So sorry Mare! You weren't hurt, that's a blessing. Everyone else I'll be thinking of you, so glad most have weathered the storm so far. tammi, you got worse then we did I think. Lots of strong wind all night but I seemed to have drifted off to sleep much sooner than I thought I would and slept right through most of it. So far no power outages that I know of. Raining here, but lightly. The ground is so saturated Holmes County surely must have some flooding here and there.

I only lost a big branch of the old lilac bush - as far as I know. Haven't done a walk around outside yet. Paper was delivered so roads must be ok.
