No particular destination roadtrip..

Larry wants to take me on a roadtrip with no particular destination... Well sort of.. He mentioned the Gulf Coast with a stop in New Orleans, and then meandering on up along the Missippi River..... no time restrictions, just enjoying each other's company and anticipating what is just "round the bend"...

My question to those that live along the Gulf Coast and perhaps in the New Orleans area & Mississippi River area... What are some "must see" places that you can recommend...

I don't have any suggestions, but sounds like a dream trip to me. I love my job, but really looking forward to retirement so I can do this. Only 12 more years, lol.

stir_fryi - the rubber snakes are a clever idea. You don't identify the heat zone in which your garden is located so that might limit or expand your perennial options. I've listed below hardy perennials growing in my beds that are untouched by deer but wouldn't want to get your hopes up of growing them if they aren't hardy in your zone. Agastache rupestris/sunset hyssop and Caryopteris/blue mist shrub are both fragrant, low-maintenance and of no interest to the bunnies or deer in my garden, along with the following: Penstemon/beardtongue Lychnis coronaria/rose campion Buddleia davidii/Butterfly bush Stachys/lamb's ear Baptisia/false indigo Chelone/turtlehead Brunnera/Siberian bugloss Hellebore/Lenten rose Stokesia laevis/Stoke's aster Trollius ledebourii/Chinese globeflower Euphorbia polychroma/cushion spurge Heuchera/coral bells Persicaria virginiana/fleeceflower Phlox divaricata/woodland phlox Phlox paniculata/tall garden phlox Nipponanthemum nipponicum/Montauk daisy Nepeta faasiini/Walkers Low catmint Ratibida columnifera/Mexican hat Most, but not all (phlox, lamb's ear, catmint, spurge, brunnera & hellebore) were grown from seed via winter sowing. Syb, The last time I was in Santa Barbara, I visited a garden shop that sounded much like what you described: "unique & antique artifacts, local craftsmen items, and combine that with plant offerings, pots, bird & bee houses, water gardens." Nice unusual specimen plants in unique pots outdoors, and lots of handmade and salvaged big garden furniture, fountains, and ornaments inside. It did not have a wildlife/organic focus or a big demo garden, though, or if it did I missed it. It's called Eye of Day, located next to a hotel in Carpinteria. I think the best part of it was the one-of-a-kind benches and other furniture created from interesting blocks of wood and stone -- very sculptural. But to have a store like that, you need enough customers that can afford it, so SB was a good location. Or you can host lots of workshops and get a lot of traffic and some income that way -- a reason for people to go out of their way to visit you, if you are out of the way, and as long as they are there they will browse and maybe buy. Search terms that may help find more of these are "garden boutique" and "garden gallery." Here in the SF bay area, I don't know of anything similar, but we do have quite a few artists who incorporate their artwork into gardens, for example -- * http://www.conversations.org/cevan.htm * Marcia Donohue in Berkeley * a garden sculpture gallery * an artifact/recycle warehouse focusing on garden art -- and also some nurseries that have wonderful display gardens and events -- * Annie's Annuals -- and there is a store called Wild Bird that focuses on attracting birds. -- and at least one of the local landscape designers who focuses on native plants also puts artwork into the gardens that features native-plant themes (urns decorated with mosaics picturing wildflowers, benches made from massive manzanita trunks, fountains in the shape of acorns, etc): Middlebrook Gardens. -- and some independent nurseries feature sculpture and hand-crafted items. So maybe it would be useful for you to go through the process of writing a business plan, or at least the part that defines the competition and what you would offer that is unique or compelling. (My fantasy business would feature a bookstore of used and new garden books, a compost demonstration area, a huge demonstration garden featuring natives, edibles, and herbs, and regular workshops in organic gardening, vegan cooking, botanical medicine, ecological design, and individual plants [would anyone else be interested in an hour seminar on kale?].)

Thank you guys! Mtn- please dont apologize i asked for the crazy. I loved your suggestions we are kindred travel spirits. I just have a tendency when sick to push all reasonable boundaries. The best part is I now have 2 remission trip destinations-- feel free to add a third or fourth. Heck les go crazy 4 or 5 more. I'll be able to pick up books to keep me dreaming should a match come up and I'm once again in hospital isolation for 3-4 weeks. Not to mention the first 100 days post transplant where life is so very very different from well life! Travelogues, guidebooks, maps and national geographic videos help me pretend I'm anywhere else! I get the worst wanderlust when a patient! Great memory! you do have our careers correct. However, just because I know what limits are, doesn't mean I think they apply to me. I may be the worst patient ever? All told, I think this will be a perfect escape. Julie, Hawaii made the short list but we decided on Nevis. The deciding factor is my best friend, her husband and her daughter (who now live in Sao Paulo) will be able to join us for the 2nd week! my son is over the moon about our traveling companions. rachelellen, I totally understand wanting to stay in and have a picnic, especially if it's been a big day of driving. I've done that many times, very happy to have a cooler on hand. You pack a hot plate and a saucepan? Wow. What do you use for a hotplate? Bumblebeez, sometimes I just can't face another restaurant meal. It's less about the food I think, and sometimes about the amount of time it takes, or just not wanting to get back in the car. Seagrass, I grew up on liverwurst sandwiches and haven't had one years! That's a childhood memory that reminds me of my Dad, who loved them. bhevv, I've been known to stop at McDonald's for a cheeseburger. Sometimes nothing else will do. It's good you can find them anywhere U.S.A. Jim, No SPAM! No SPAM! (Although I respect your right to eat it whenever you want.) foodonastump, I know many people like you. It's not always about the destination for me. I find I enjoy myself more if I try to stay present in the journey as well. Of course, some journeys are more pleasant than others. sushipup, I've gotten into a habit of eating little meals, so a full restaurant meal is usually too much food, especially on the road. I try to order off the appetizer menu, or often a la carte, so there's not a lot leftover. It's less about snacking for me, than keeping level blood sugar. lpinkmountain, I like what's in your cooler. What's gorp? Indicanoe, that sounds like fun. Ah, the days of reasonable gas prices. I keep expecting it to go up shortly, just about the time I want to hit the road!

Can't really help with the sigtseeing but that is the way to go...Hubby and I have done it many times and have found many, many interesting spots to visit....Lately, it's just been day trips, just last week after riding for 3+ hours, we found ourselves in Maryland having lunch..... One of the perks to be retired........

While we were out shopping this am... we decided our first stop will be in Seale Alabama at my DD... stay a couple days, and then make our way to the Gulf... taking our time along the way... meander the Gulf Coast with a stop for sure in New Orleans, and then more meandering to the Mississippi River along the Mississippi border.. and on North to Memphis, then on to Missouri to stay at his place up there for a few days, then home from there..

Of course all the tentative charted course is subject to change... but I am going to make sure my camera is empty so I can take loads of photos.. =0) He said I deserved a little bit of a vacation and some coddling after my surgery... Got to love a man like that !!

In Missouri, there are old water mills. These are disappearing with time, so are worth viewing. Most of these in southern MO are located on big springs. The folks there call these 'springs', but by my viewpoint, I would class these as underground rivers based on their tremendous flow rates and year around flow. Two of the nicest mills are Bollinger (not on a spring) and Hogdsen (sp) (on a spring).

There is a covered bridge at the Bollinger mill. This 3 story structure had been kept in good repair and the internal machinery is in working order, a rarity for Missouri mills. It is also a Civil War site. During the Civil War, the Rebels hanged the miller because they believed he ground flour for the Union Army.

These mills were ciritical during the Civil War. Making flour was a very slow process with a water driven, single stone set. Flour was a basic ingredient for both armies. Camp recipies depended on flour.

One of the most crude mills is the 'Falling Spring Mill". It is a tiny building barely large enough to house the bul and pinion gear. A belt was passed through the front wall to power equipment sitting outside the mill. One unique feature of this mill is that it was used to generate electricity. This was ome of the few rural farms in Ozark country to have electric power. This location was isolated from any towns of significant size. The mill was first constructed without a building and put to use. Later, it was enclosed. Another feature is the spring. This spring erupts about 15 feet up from a rock wall. This mill is remote and off the beaten path.

Another nice mill is "Alley Sping". This spring emerges at the bottom of a rather quiet pool. Its too late in the season now, but this mill is very photogenic with fall colors.

Yes, Alley Spring is a beautiful spot and the trees were lovely this year. I live about 10 mi. from Alley Spring. They have a great picnic area and you can walk down to the river. Family had our 50th Wedding Anniversary there last year.

We took a trip like this in April this year, and after we left New Orleans, we took the River Road and visited several plantations. To us, being from California, they were breathtakingly beautiful. We also loved Natchez, Mississippi. Enjoy your trip!

We discussed the River Road.. but he said he wants to save that for spring time when the flowers are all blooming and we will hopefully have more time.. We can pick up the Natchez Trace from close by here, and go to Natchez and such...We will probably be gone only for 3 or 4 days.. maybe 5.... But it will be fun just spending time with Larry and the girls.. (Trixie and Lucy pooches)

We will look into those places in Missouri too.. Since he has a place in Fisk, we can spend lots of time doing day trips from there..

Well if it was me I would want to see Vicksburg. We are Civil War buffs and it's one of the battlefields I haven't seen yet. You'll have to take lots of pics at all your destinations and let us know all the fun stuff you do along the way!!!

Thank you Jemdandy for sharing the info.... Bollinger Mill is only about 60 miles from his place in Fisk.. easy peasy day trip.. ...and Alley Millis just 85 miles.. another easy peasy day trip...

Larry loves war history and museums, etc... and so battlefields are his cup of tea.. We have some friends that do civil war re-enactments and have been invited to attend some of those with them.. .. and Larry said "Most definitely !!"..

We live quite close to Shiloh, and so one day we plan to go back there again to tour that battlefield.. Last time there, it started to rain.. so didn't get to see much.. but we did get to eat at a great eatery that did smoked catfish... deelish.. and worth the trip.. We would not have found it if it were not for the rain.. what a blessing eh??

I've driven US Hwy 61 from New Orleans to Minneapolis, and it mostly parallels the Mississippi. I highly recommend it - you will see a LOT of this country (both good and bad) and find some of the best restaurants you'd never otherwise know about.

Have a great trip, Carolyn. When Harry and I used to do that, we mainly centered our attention to the next best place to eat. :-) Lot's of great seafood on the Gulf Coast.
