Co-workers

I'm curious as to what, if anything, you'd do in the following co-worker situations.

1. A co-worker with body odor issues. The young woman's odor isn't bad from a distance, but if you are downwind (literally) or sitting next to her, it is noticeable.

2. A co-worker that cooks fish in the small, staff lounge area. She's a gem too, complaining, when someone opens the doors to air the room out, that she can no longer have a private conversation since the doors are open.

3. A co-worker that only talks to you to be a jerk and put you down, even if your conversation has nothing to do with him. I dealt with this one, but I am curious what you all would say.

4. A co-worker that takes community property but does not return it and takes materials from your work space that you have prepared.

ugh, I am struggling this week with co-worker blues too.
BO is such a delicate subject, lack of shower or maybe an illness?
No fish in the dang break room, it stinks!
Try your best to ignore the jerk, who knows what his agenda is.
I think you need to involve management on the removal of intellectual property.

Talk to your supervisor. Each of these issues is more properly dealt with by him or her rather than by you. If you want to choose one to leave out to limit the list to 3 items, leave out #3.

She's getting an awesome deal on the photographer, but sometimes you do get what you pay for. I know a few that would charge $4500 for wedding photography. It's an all day job (follow the bridal party all day, pre wedding, wedding, reception) then go home and process the pictures--it's a lot of work. I see no problem with family making meals for weddings. My husbands family does it quite often. My favourite wedding meal was pulled pork and oven roasted potatoes with home made dinner rolls. Saved the bride and groom a bundle of money. When I got married, we used a JP and got married at my mother in laws back yard. Only the bridal party and immediate family had dinner in a restaurant, and everyone met back at the house for a fire pit party. We got married for under $1000 (including the JP, our clothes for the day which included our kids and my wedding dress, and dinner out) and 24 years later, we're still married. I don't expect wedding favours (who does that anymore?). How much one spends on their wedding is up to them. I specifically asked for no gifts when we got married as I had been away from home for 13 years at that point and didn't need or want anything. People feel they have to give a gift anyway. I'm not a fan of e-vites. If you have a computer, print your own invites and RSVP note cards (there's a million templates online) and mail them out. I used my typewriter to do that 25 years ago. LOL It took FOREVER! All in all, it's her wedding. She can do as she likes. In the end it doesn't have to affect anyone else. Also, I can't remember ever going to a wedding where the guests didn't pay for their booze. Other than a bottle of wine on the table to toast the bride and groom, we've always paid for our drinks. ETA: also, the wedding is all about the bride and groom, and not what's in it for the guest. Just because you spend $ on a gift, doesn't mean they have to give you a gourmet dinner and a 'favour'. In my day, we went to weddings to be witnesses to a joyful event. We danced. We had fun. And we gave gifts. We didn't expect anything in return. Since my Hercules peas will be producing fresh peas soon, I decided to cook a big pot of them for my co-workers yesterday. I always freeze more than I can eat, my picky wife doesn't like them, so it is just me eating them. We have a lot of new guys that haven't tasted them. They were like "OMG!" :) We grilled some chicken, made cornbread and some other stuff to go with them. But they raved about the peas!

I would use a push mower on it for the remainder of the year. I don't see why he wouldn't use a winterizer...... still 4-6 eeeks out on that though.

Gift certificate to a local garden center? He may not have the green thumb, but maybe his spouse does? Plus there's always going to be things he may need for the new yard that require maintenance even if he doesn't garden/raise veggies. I was pleased with the actual small yard shrubs they gave me upon retirement, but alas they died before they could be planted as the landscaping at my new home hadn't yet been completed. (I tried to save them!) They also gave me bird houses to set up, so I do have that remembrance... In my case, I had let it be known I was downsizing - but they knew I was moving homes. (OF course, if he's going into an apartment or rental property... disregard the above!) Actually, at my old company, if someone leaves (retirement, new career op) we all pitch in and donate money along when we sign the going away card. The "gift committee" (informal, just the department administrative assistant and a few interested volunteers that vary each time depending on how well said individuals know the departee) never drew upon company funds to provide a gift. The company itself did send a gift certificate that I received a month or two after retirement. (No idea if they do that for people moving to another job opportunity if there's no formal retirement request.)

PKPonder, if you want to vent on this thread, please feel free.

2 & 4 irk me the most because 1 is a nice person, I just feel bad that she must no know, and I already spoke to 3. He's known to be a jerk, and I think knowing I am both nice, liked, and not afraid to speak plainly and directly to him will have him leaving me alone. If not, next time, I'll be sure to make it clear that I was neither talking to him nor care about his opinion.

I'm really just curious how others would or wouldn't hand the situation. BTW, we don't really have a supervisor, per se, and unless things are really bad, we deal with them on our own.

When I was still working (I retired at the end of last year), we had the fish-in-the-breakroom-microwave issue. The big boss put out a message that fish was NOT to be cooked or reheated. Took care of the problem for a couple years, then some new staff who were fish lovers started it up again and the boss had to put out the memo again.

At the first agency where I worked (for the state), there was an employee that several other coworkers continually complained about. Not that he smelled of sweat or bad breath, but they claimed that (how do I put this delicately?) it was like no one ever taught him how to use toilet paper. We had to work in (rotating) teams of two, so smells were definitely an issue. The supervisor, then Human Resources, had several chats with him. I honestly never smelled anything on the guy, so I took extra shifts with him.

Another very annoying trait of a co-worker...THE KNOW-IT-ALL!! A co-worker of mine knows everything, he is extremely condescending to everyone in the office and lets a person know that HE is the reason the business is booming. Ugghhhh. Just 6 months till retirement!

I agree about HR, but until then, whenever the BO coworker came near me, I would politely excuse myself, and head to the water cooler, break room or rest room.
I would limit contact with the said jerk. Short and sweet.

Someone taking community property or your work is the most serious. I would take to the supervisor about that one.

Interesting. Thank you all for your thoughts. Talked to a mentor today, and she told me I was doing the right things and being professional with how I have handled the situations. She honestly thinks I should speak up to others more on other issues, not that I spoke up on all of these.
