Also easy to find almost anywhere - 25 watt equiv LED bulbs in the same light color as incandescent (2700). LEDs produce very nice light.

I'm hoping my few incandescents hold out until the new LED's with a true 'warm' light come on the market. The LED's I've tried (and returned) say "Soft White" but they are greenish. There's something called the "Finally" LED due out soon.

I use chandlier bulbs with the large base. They seem relatively easy to find.

If you get brand name LEDs with a CRI in the mid-90s and an incandescent-like temperature of 2700, I think you'll find the light quality and color rendering is better than incandescents. I have many and that's been my experience.

Snidely -- I'll remember to check the 'temperature'. What I returned were name brand -- Phillips, I think. Bought at Lowe's. These need to be dim-able.

Chisue, I really dislike Phillips bulbs. Maybe it's my imagination, but I bought several outdoor floods in that brand at Home Depot and they lasted about a heartbeat.

DH has begun buying bulbs by the case at a local commercial lighting place, most are Sylvania and I feel we get our money's worth from them....There are 6 outdoor flood fixtures at this house and I need them to last even if the initial expense is higher.

You wouldn't believe the range of sizes it takes to light this house including built-in fixtures, lamps, then considering all the lighting (that I was so happy to have) outdoors.

I clipped an article originally on Slate. The author, Seth Stevenson, focuses on "...the elephant in the lamp socket: The quality of the light."

For warmer tones, he likes TCP Elite (an LED, 10 watts, 800 lumens) and the October-due-date Finally bulb (14.5 watts, 800 lumens). The Finally is less efficient than an LED "more in line with a CFL". The author raves about the warm light it casts, almost identical to an incandescent. (It does contain trace mercury.)

I should try our electrical supply house for more ideas. I've yet to replace most of the slightly more expensive bulbs that we bought there along with our fixtures in 2001.

Commonwealth Edison has started mailing us useless information that compares our electrical use with that of 'neighbors'. That might help if we all lived in similar houses or within a condo building. For SFHs of all ages, shapes and sizes...it'just another way the company claims it is helping its captive customers while it petitions for a rate hike.

My google search suggests that TCP Elite bulbs have a CRI of 82, which is poor. Anything less than 90 may produce an unsatisfactory light.

My electrical utility sends a similar report. I think it's harmless and maybe even helpful to some. Many of the programs and activities that investor-owned companies have are mandated by local regulatory body, a Public Utilities Commission or some such. Sometimes blame that utilities receive are really for programs that originated from the regulator. Ours in California (the California PUC) is particularly inept and is in the middle of some problems from having botched several important matters.

Too many possibilities for bulbs, and too little for our electricity carrier. LOL

I just know I can't bear to look in the bathroom mirror without a more 'rosy' light source in my sconces. The LED's I tried were too harsh -- looking old is bad enough; 'green' is over the line.

We have halogen fixtures over the bathrooms sinks/mirrors. The CRI of them is close to 100. They're excellent in that use. While not at all energy efficient, our halogen bulbs aren't on long enough for that to matter. All are on dimmers.

You might find halogen bulbs to fit your fixtures. The negatives to halogen are that they're not particularly long lived and they do get warm. Hot, really. They're available in sizes and shapes intended to replace the old fashioned incandescents.

Lucked out and found some at local grocery store. Bought 2 boxes, but will probably get a couple more.

Thanks, but I can't use halogens, Snidely. The sconces are glass, open at the top, but each is only rated for the heat generated by a 60 watt incandescent.

Ole Joyful, there were under-cabinet halogens at sink and downdraft stove in this house when we bought several months ago. They work about half of the time, get hot, then loose, go off.

I had an electrician here for something just yesterday and showed him, he's looking into more cost effective replacements that would give better light. There is a piece of white cabinet over the sink that may have to be replaced to accommodate new, but for a change I seem to be lucky - my electrician tells me he installed custom cabinetry before doing his electricians apprenticeship and can make a subtle and satisfactory change.

I'm looking forward to lighting that works these upcoming dark winter days ;)
