I sewed a handbag

I made a handbag for myself yesterday. It is Vera Bradley fabric from Ebay. I had gotten a wallet in this fabric and wanted a handbag to match. Couldn't find one in a style I liked but ran across some fabric on Ebay so I made just what I wanted.

Oh jeez, DO NOT BUY from that website!!!!! Their products are AWFUL!!! VERY CHEAP leather, poor assembly, they fall apart in days, and they have HORRIBLE customer service. Probably THE WORST retailer on the web!

Pocketbook, Purse or Handbag?

I've always called it a purse, but Grandma, born in Ohio, called it a pocketbook. Like cilantro's family, she also had a "coin purse" that she kept change in, it looked like a small bag with a metal clasp. She also had a "compact" for face powder. Mother had a purse and a wallet. The wallet had a small compartment for coins, slots for driver's license and credit card and a place for paper money as well as one for her check book. She had a matching "cigarette case" which held a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. She did eventually quit smoking, and now a cell phone case has taken the place of the cigarettes. Now I have a purse and a wallet, much like Mother's, but mine has more spaces for the endless supply of today's cards, from insurance cards to Costco to the local gas station, AAA, AARP, the library. You name it, they got a card! cacaobird, I refuse to go out in public in my pajamas, although I live near a college town and it seems like 90% of the students go to morning classes in their pajamas. Since I live out in the country, though, I can walk out with a cup of coffee and curse the beavers in the pond without anyone else seeing me. I'll be 49 in 5 months, and now I tell myself, "Geez, I'm on the cusp of the half-century mark...what can I (or "they") expect? If I were a piece of furniture, I'd be an heirloom!" So, we relax our standards! We no longer compare ourselves to young starlets, and try not to make comparisons to younger versions of ourselves. At the same time, obviously, we also don't give up! I absolutely pay attention to women in their 40's, 50's, 60's and beyond, and love to see how wonderful women of all ages can look. I'm impressed when I see women making an effort. It's delightful. I do think clothes are more important to pulling ourselves together as we age. Being well-scrubbed and well-rested may have been all we needed at 25, but a little more effort is called for now. Hence, my query to Bumblebeez! I saw a woman in her 70's the other day who looked so polished, so poised, so together, that I just thought, "Gee, I want to look like that when I grow up!" She wasn't trying to look like a teenager. She fully owned her "maturity." I love that. I'd rather acquire that presence, that comfort, than figure out how to perpetually look like Britanny Spears 'til the day I die!

Hope this isn't too late for you, but I have that pattern and like most handbag patterns, the needlepoint canvas they are talking about is the plastic kind with holes in it. You can get it at craft stores, Joanns, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, most any place they sell craft items. You cut a piece of the plastic canvas to make a bottom for your bag so it will hold its shape better, sit straight, and make it easier to see what is in there. I make a fabric sleeve to match the lining, slip the plastic canvas in it and lay in bottom of purse after it is completely made. Then if you make another one, just take the plastic out and reuse in your new purse. Hope this makes sense. Murphy

This is just lovely! Love the fabric and the style, and the size is good, not too big, not too tiny.

I'm busy accumulating fabrics to make a fall/winter bag right now, since the one I made and have been carrying all summer is starting to look less-seasonal. :) It's orchids and parrots and basket weave, very tropical looking.

Oh that's great, very pretty. I wish I could sew. I even bought a sewing machine a couple Christmases ago at a great price on Black Friday. I just need to figure out how to use the thing, lol

That is beautiful! I didn't know Vera Bradley fabrics were available on eBay. My DD and DGD are big fans . . . maybe I'll try to make something for them. Something simple, as I don't have your sewing skills. :-)

Alisande, the fabric is listed as Vera Bradley napkin remnants. It wasn't real cheap. They are selling an 18" by 14" piece for about $5. I ordered 3 pieces and I got one piece that was 42" wide and 18" long. But it also wasn't horribly expensive and I wound up with just what I wanted.

Thanks, Rose. I looked at eBay today and was going to ask you if the napkin remnants are what you used. I've never made bags, but Caroline's recent posts inspired me to buy a book on the subject (the one linked below), and it would be such fun to make a couple with Vera Bradley fabric for my "girls"--even if the bags are simple and/or small.

Alisande, you could also combine the Vera fabric with a coordinating solid color fabric. I used some plain black I had for part of the strap and for trim.

Beautiful!! I have a Vera out of this print. The purse is call Eloise. A lady at our church is making purses for our bazaar. It is a classic black purse and then there is a bottom piece that is reversible that the purse fits in and it buttons on. I hope to buy one.. If I do I'll post a picture. She was a Home Ec teacher.
