Gone Astray

Last night as I was driving back into town someone coming the other direction flashed his lights at me. The driver in from of me and I both slowed way down, and rounded the corner to see a little white dog trotting down the opposite lane. We both stopped and the driver in front of me tried to coax it over to a driveway, but it immediately trotted right back into the road. I called it over, and was able to pick it up and put it in my car.

He was a old, broken-coated, Jack Russell Terrier with a collar that had his name, Max, and phone number. I called the number but got no answer, so I turned around, and drove him to my house. I put him in our dog crate, and had my wife try to contact the owners, since I still had to go into town.

When I got home two hours later, they had picked him up. They had just moved to a neighborhood near where I found him, and he had got out. He reminded me so much of my Jack Russell who passed away a year ago, so I'm glad it had a happy ending.

What a wonderful story, how lucky he is that you saved him from what might have been terrible misfortune on the road.

SCG, maybe you don't have much snow cover where you are? If you do have good snow, cats shouldn't be an issue if you locate the feeder in an open area, hanging from a tree. Even the ground feeding birds will spot any cat long before it gets near and will fly up into the tree until the cat leaves. And in my experience cats don't like going out in the snow and cold anyway. Just remember to remove the feeder when the snow is gone and the weather warms.

I think you sometimes have to go in circles and test other ideas to come back to what you love. I know I love a lot more things than my house will hold, and sometimes whimsy will have me leaning a new direction that I love but just doesn't fit and I realize that when I go back and look twice. But sometimes that new direction takes. My dining room chandelier is one of those. I went out looking for a simple, traditional fixture, liked the idea of glass arms that would sparkle, and wound up with antiqued metal arms and lots of dangling crystal. And I love it and the way it looks in the room. I still got traditional but different -- but in a different direction than I started. Sometimes what you think you wanted doesn't work, so you have to look, and if you come back to something you've always liked, then it ought to fit the other things you love. Even if you have to make some adjustments to the transitions. The iron fixtures -- well, I've always liked those too. ;) I'm sure I saw and liked the one you picked in my searches but I ruled out bare bulbs out of concern for being too harsh when looking between the family room and kitchen with the breakfast fixture in the middle. I do think you can make that fixture work and there are lots of ways to pull some black touches in. Part of it for me is seeing your fan as a fan that happens to have an unobtrusive light on it. In the lighter finish, it goes with your appliances where a darker fan would be harsh, even with touches of black. Think of it as a keep-you-cool appliance in your work area and the iron fixture as lighting helping to define a different mood and setting in your eating area, then work on the transitions and little elements that bring the two together. I'm not sure where you are planning on using the fabric you have pictured or if you already have it. A black background floral with plenty of white in it too for chair set cushions and/or window treatments (also wood Roman shades with a bit of black in the mix) could be a possibility that doesn't mean painting the table and chairs. You can put some black accents, pencil liner or border on a subway splash. I really like that paper towel holder, and you will have no problem finding a counter top version if you want to go that route. In the spring, you might even tuck some of the light blue and green flowers like you have pictured to adorn the fixture or try some mini-shades in the soft colors. You have a ton of options. Take your time finding the right ones. I saw your bathroom post -- your home has a lot of charm. I think you are headed in a good direction. Sometimes the things that make a house a home are not the obvious choices. Keep in mind you are talking to someone with three kitchen cabinet finishes, 2 counters, 2 different hardware finishes and 2 different faucet finishes -- and a lot more crystal than she ever imagined liking on one fixture. The only diagram that does what you want is an ancient, unsafe way to make what you want happen. It involves alternating hot and neutral on the red wire and sending hot and neutral on the black and white. The diagram is now just for educational, trick question type scenarios. You can either have a broken 3 way type set up. Send switched hot via the red wire from the house, bring the red to a switch in the garage. If Someone turns off the switch in the house, the light will not be able to be turned on by the switch in the garage. You could also have a real 3 way set up by going to the smart home website and getting two of the insteon toggle relay switches. The one in the house only needs a hot and neutral. The one in the garage has the light on the load and also needs hot and neutral. They send signals down the line telling each other to turn off or on.

Wonderful, Bob. I can sure see how that little guy would remind you of Spot. His owners would be so grateful that you stopped and rescued him. How nice that the guy flashed his lights.

Oh I love a happy ending! Thankfully they had a good phone number on him.
I always keep a tag on my little toy Fox terrier, she is chipped of course but I want information right on her.

Lucky for Max that you three were caring people.

We've become the 'go to' neighbors when people find strays, probably because everyone knows our Westie and sees my DH walking him. We've returned dogs to new neighbors a couple of times.

Moving companies should add a caution to people about securing their pets until the pets become accustomed to where 'home' is. Did the phone number on Max's tag still work, or had they reported him missing?

Neighbors have returned a couple of addled Seniors to their families, too. Our police department has a robo-call that can go out to homes in an area where someone has wandered off.

If one of my girls got out, I hope someone like you would find her. We stop for the animals too, and every owner has been very appreciative.

That was so nice of you. You probably saved the dogs life. It would have no doubt gotten hit if you hadn't rescued it.

I still miss my terrier and she's been gone 13 years.

I'm so glad you took the time to get Max back to his owners. I've lost a dog (who wasn't very friendly) and someone went into the median of a busy interstate hwy to rescue him, then kept him at her house for several days until we could locate each other.. don't depend on a rabies tag for identification.. that didn't work for us. Having his name embroidered on his color is what lead us to him. Microchipping and/or a address/phone number tag are the best things of course.

I tried calling the number on his collar, but never got through, and never even got an answering machine. However after I dropped him off at home, my wife called the number and left a message and was called back. I probably misread the number since he was wiggling around as I tried to read it.

Years ago our dog Spot got out in Minnesota, and the neighbors spotted him trotting down the grassy medium strip of highway 61. He was returned safely, and lived another 15 years after that. So I'm glad to have been able to "pay it forward".
