The NINA & PINTA (replicas) are out cruising again, and made a port stop here for a few days. Those ships are small!

There were 20 on the NiÃÂ±a, 26 on the Pinta, and 41 on the Santa MarÃÂa.

Wally: I appreciate your explanation of the 746 watts equalling 1 hp. I checked all 6 of my physics text books and found nothing addressing this. Only 550ft lbs/sec equaling 1 hp. Although I was well aware that 746 watts was considered 1 hp in generating. Now that I think about, I have seen some English of German engines expressed in KW output. I too am a EE, however, I had almost no education in power generating or distribution. My speciality and education was in micro electronics, thus I am quiet familiar with Ohm's Law. Now an interesting question: How did James Watts make his early steam engine run when he had almost no steam pressure at the time, too little to push the piston down. This was because he had no pressure vessel that would hold steam pressure of any appreciable magnitude. I ran across the answer to this in the Henry Ford museum.

kato, your dahlias are so beautiful! I love your Plum Pretty and the lilac purple toward the back. How are you doing with overwintering your dahlias? Unfortunately, the cold temps during the polar vortex completely wiped out all the dahlias stored in my garage. I had left some to overwinter in the soil with bags of leaves on top but I would not know if they survive until spring. I have on order for spring delivery, Dahlia Purple Taihejo and Dahlia Lilac Time. I am into purple and lilac shades dahlias this year. Candy, sweet Pirate table for Talk Like a Pirate Day. I never take time to see what kind of day is being celebrated. Glad you had some things to put this one together so you could share with us. The two silver lanterns are pretty and look good with your other lantern and gold coins for the cp. Makes me want to come over and go looking for the pirates chest full of jewels and more money! Do you have the tea on? Like the way you tied the napkins and set them on top of the plates. Great to see your steins again. They look so good with this setting. So glad you used your pewter plates with this setting. Reminds me I have mine stashed some where and need to pull them out and set a ts with them. This one's for you. A friend of mine is the librarian on the current Semester at Sea voyage. The ship is in Gdansk, Poland, and he just posted the following picture to his blog:

Maybe its the Santa Maria? :-)

Hi O F,

Was that the complement on the original ships ... or the current ones ...or both?

Sure wouldn't be much room per person, especially when one considered the quantity of provisions, including water, that would need to be carried.

Bob, that picture doesn't want to match those of the Santa Maria. New studies are trying to determine if the wreck (1492) has been found off the coast of Haiti.
Joy, that was the original crew. Boat size: One of the ship's advantages was that it was roomy enough for plenty of provisions, a capacity that could also be used to bring treasure back to an expedition's sponsor.

I know the ships had a lot of crew for their size, but it always amazes me! My husband read Two Years Before the Mast (I have yet to read it), and we've got plans to sail up the California coast someday. Knowing history of such travel sure changes one's perspectives on it. TFS!!

Thanks for posting. It is fascinating to see the size of these ships. Those people certainly had courage to take off in one of those although I guess they had no idea what lay ahead.
