Have you used their specials?

I wanted insulation in my walls, of my old house. Did some searching, and decided to sign up and purchase an Angies List membership.

Found someone to blow insulation in to my walls. Scanned all special offers through Angies List since, and finally found another one I need.

Will get a light fixture installed early October. This has sat around since July 2008, when I moved from Tulsa to Edmond... and I got custody of it during the divorce. I am very happy to own this light fixture, as it was my mother in laws, and I always liked it. When I lived in Tulsa, and while living in Tahlequah I had it hanging over the dining room table, but this time it will go in the kitchen.

We used Angies List 4X's this year~~we had our kitchen counters done, inside whole house painting, all of our flooring and DH had a plumber come out for something small~~all from Angies List and were very happy with all of them.

Love Angie's List. Have found some great people. For repairs/home jobs I do get several bids and pick the one I think is best for me, but it is a great way to find help.

I'm not too sure about Angie's List. So far, someone who I worked for gave me an "A" rating. And someone I never worked for, talked to or provided an estimate to, gave me an "F" rating. They had only emailed. So ... this last January comes along ... A man who read both reviews hired me. He got one other estimate from an Angie's List referral. The man hired me because the other company told him it would take 2 hours to prune his 17 trees, and I told him it would take about 2 days. It took me 2 work days. And he said he liked the pruning a lot. So I have been encountering tales and experiences of both hit and miss with Angie's List. My favorite option for referrals is to call professional contractors and ask them who they would hire to work on their home. Like calling a plumber and asking what electrician they would hire. Or calling the manager of Les Schwab Tires and asking which mechanic he would pick to work on his truck engine. So getting back to this paint thing. One option for finding a painter, could be to call the workers or manager of a Sherwin Williams or Miller Paint business, and ask for a couple of contractors who they would like to see painting their homes.

One more thing. When I call people from Angie's List, I always mention that I got their name on Angie's List. I want them to know I'll probably be submitting a report on them and I figure their attention to me gets heightened a little. Now, considering that I only use "A" grade people, I probably don't have to say that and the service would still be good. But I do it anyway, just in case ;) Just to show you how much businesses SHOULD care about Angie's List, when we redid our entire front lawn area I interviewed three landscape design companies from Angie's List, again all "A" grades. I could have happily picked from any of them, but went with a guy who believed in recycling as many plants as we could from the old design. Anyway, I asked him one day how he advertised to get business and his response was that he never advertised. He said he got all his business from Angie's List and he was always swamped. I wouldn't say businesses "ignore Angie's List at their peril" or anything like that, but there is a definite advantage to having great reports on Angie's List.

Once you find one or two good trades people, you can also ask them to recommend others. That has worked well for us. We joined Angie's list recently because we were going to do a pool remodel. My husband handled that so I don't know if he found it worthwhile, but there was one creepy aspect to Angie's list. A few months after joining, we got a phone call from them soliciting reviews on areas where they need more reviews - the list of what they were looking for started with neurologist, went through a bunch of medical specialties. Quite personal information to ask someone to reveal - I told him that after he had asked about the first few that I wasn't going answer questions about which medical specialists I've used and so he moved on reading the list. The next category wasn't any better and I told him that if I had a review I wanted to post, I'd go to their website and put it in, but I didn't care to spend any more time on the phone with him and didn't want to be quizzed about what services I use.

We had trouble finding contractors for our remodel until a member from this Gardenweb site recommended Angie's list to me. It turned out it was a sound advice. I read every review of contractors in the category we were looking for. I picked out ones who had done projects of similar size and dollar amount. It helped me to compile a list of questions and contractors to call. We set appointments with contractors who sounded promising in the phone conversations. We met these contractors in person and presented scope of work. We then made final decision based on their quotes, personality, feedback from their references, work style and starting time. Angie's list provides a starting point; there is fair amount of work afterwards to screen contractors. We know there is risk involved because good contractors work out with other clients may not guarantee they would work well for us. We like to spell out details and specifications, a contractor may think we are difficult. We figured, at least we made informed decisions. We liked the contractor we chose so much while half way working the first project, we asked them to plan for another one. We are very happy with both projects, and had great working experience with the contractor and all of his subs. I left a glorious review for the contractor and his company on AngieÃ¢ÂÂs list. I also mailed him my review so that he could use it as a reference. On a different subject - we had used Consumer Report for almost 30 years, but in recent years, we are not so sure about their ratings....

We dropped it this year. I found it to be hit and miss. We live in a large metro area and I didn't like that we were paying more I think than the regular membership for contractors who were far away and we would never consider. I think you can do just as well using Yelp now and it's free.

Never tried Angie's List... but did recently try homeadvisor.com which I see advertised on TV constantly, and it's free. What a joke that was! I'm sure that location makes a difference, but in this case I was looking for a plumber/GC who could replace a laundry pump. I got zero responses regarding the plumbing job in question, but several emails from companies about an hour from here that would be willing to install new windows for me. LOL!!!

Prior to reviving my Angie's List membership, I tried to find some contractors on my own. I got some real lulus. One wanted to provide a bid by having me send a picture of my home, he did not want to take the time to actually come out and look.
I'm sure no one method is completely 100%, but getting several bids on Angie's list and then choosing after I researched and interviewed the bidders gave me good results.

When I went to cancel my membership to AL, I was told I could change to the "basic" plan for $9/year compared to the $29/year I had been paying and only used a few times. This basic plan includes only local contractors.....why would I look for those who are located a long distance from me? Had I known there was a basic plan I would have opted for that in the first place. I also check Yelp ratings when looking for help but don't think that is reliable as anyone can post ratings there, including the potential hiree.

Sometimes a good thing gets too big, becomes too commercial, and gets compromised. I look at the BBB listings. A place that's been in business for many years is usually a decent bet. Getting three bids is useful.

I like Angie's List but always find a deal for renewing. Sneaky me, I registered under two differmt email accounts, so which ever one is not active, I get lots of pleas to join again for a low price. Don't tell Angie.

I refer to it often. Almost every item I tell the service person that I found their name on Angie's List, they offer me a discount. I don't specifically use someone because they are offering a deal.I use Groupon more for that.

Nothing beats a reference from someone you know. Angie's List isn't that, not in any way

Many of the "ratings" sites and services try to walk an ethical tightrope and few do so successfully. Even the BBB isn't what you think it is. It's more like a trade association, businesses pay to be members and then can tout that as a credential. Say what?

I know the faults with BBB, but it's just one more factor in our consideration. At least we know the business has been open for more than 24 hours.

We are fortunate to have some neighbors who have lived here much longer than we. One helped us find a guy who can plow gravel driveways without removing most of the gravel. One just gave us the name of a mason who is able to do all four of our projects. Our former next-door neighbor referred us to her dentist.

The KT recently discussed how well each of us knows our neighbors. It might help those who 'never speak' or 'merely nod' to initiate a 'block party'. Being 'neighborly' is not only a nice feeling, but useful. It can be darn important for your health and safety too.

I used Angie's List successfully when finding our bathroom remodeler.

My one complaint about AL is that the user may not see well deserved negative reviews about a vendor on the site. This is because if a negative review is left, Angie's List (without giving the customer a "heads up" or the option to decline their help) inserts themselves in the middle of the situation in an attempt to resolve it.

This happened to me when a porch remodeling company didn't return my call requesting a meeting to look at work I needed done (about $8-10k worth). After three weeks with no call back, I left a one sentence negative review stating the facts on AL. Angie's List hopped on the phone, called the company, who then called and screamed at me for leaving a negative review. Didn't appreciate that one little bit.

I told AL that I would never again leave a review on their site (positive or negative) because of that.

When we needed things done around the house, I just went with recommendations from friends. I heard once you have Angie's List on your computer it's almost impossible to remove it.

Linda -- Angie's List not a program that downloads onto your computer. It's a completely external website a customer buys a membership with so they can access vendor reviews. Maybe what you've heard is that the membership is automatically renewed each year unless the customer logs in and declines?
