Neck surgery scar treatment

I wrote a few weeks ago about upcoming neck surgery. Anterior corpectomy and fusion.

Had the surgery on August 21st and my two week checkup yesterday where I had my dressings removed and saw my incision for the first time. I about fainted. Huge ugly scar about 2" long and 3/8" thick.

People have told me that the scar will be practically invisible after it heals. I have a real hard time believing that.

I bought some Mederma (suggested by the doctor) on the way home yesterday but is there any other things I can do to minimize the scar as it heals?

I know not to expose it to the sun.

Below is the x-ray taken yesterday. You can see it but there is a plastic spacer where vertebrae C5 was removed. A plate and four screws span the distance from C4 and C6 stabilizing the area and giving an inch in height back that I lost the last couple years due to disc compression.

I originally thought C6 and C7 were being removed but I was mistaken. Since those two already fused naturally, there was no point in taking them out.
