Toe troubles

One toe is curving to the left and trying to go under it's neighbor. I can put a divider in there which helps slightly. (Once, though, the rubbing did cause a blister on the curving toe.)

The doctor said he could stop the curving with a surgical office procedure (did he say something about the tendon? cannot remember).

The woman in front of me in yoga has completely crossed toes. I don't want that in addition to arthritis already plaguing that poor foot.

Since it's fairly minor at this point, am I being silly to have it done?

Consult with your doctor about the pros and cons.

Chances are, having it done early prevents future problems, and you'll probably have a quicker recovery.

Yes, the remedy might involve severing the tendon - it's a common procedure, especially for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Thanks everyone - so helpful. I will have to think about whether to do a "flat" look like MDBMom or a return into the toe kick like catbuilder or suzannes1 suggested. Hollysprings - I just stood at my counter and while my toes aren't under the toe kick, they are in the about 1" space that the baseboard/shoe combination would take up in front of the cabinet, and since this is a primary workspace I think I need to keep the toe kick. Thanks again for all the pictures, really helped me visualize the options.

I do hope you took her to the vet already. My dog had a swollen toe, which I didn't think was a real problem since it didn't affect her walking or seem to bother her at all. I had taken her to the vet for other things and they noticed the toe, but didn't seem too concerned of it, so I figured they would know and left it as just another in a long line of benign bumps she'd previously developed. It became a natural part of life for months until it suddenly turned dark and made her limp, at which time I panicked and took her in. My deepest nightmare and regret... Even after they surgically took the toe off, she developed Mast Cell cancer from it. The surgery was too late and killed her about a month later. The kicker here is that once the toe turned dark, my vets relayed of their having heard of many other dogs getting Mast Cell cancer from swollen toes before and that if ever a dog had a swollen toe you should just take it off and not chance it, because even if it's benign in the beginning, the chances are it will turn later, and probably too late. These are the same vets that noticed it earlier and didn't say a damn thing! I'm angry and frustrated and just don't understand. I miss my girl terribly and feel I truly let her down. I know I was in denial and should have investigated further and not just count on bumbling doctors not paying attention or simply not giving a damn. I think I was afraid of knowing due to not being able to fix it, but this was fixable if caught in time. Please do not allow this to happen to your baby. You'll regret it forever. I do. My heart aches terribly from it all. I will never forget my beloved baby girl and pray I reunite with her in the ever-after when my time on this earth is done. God knows it would never be Heaven for me without her.

"he cut the toe kick so my arm is between the bottom of the cabinet and the top of the vent." So you can remove the old toe kick and replace it with a new one? Then I'd (1) remove the vent cover, if any; (2) remove the toe kick; (3) carefully measure the width, height, and location of the duct; (4) cut the new toe kick for the duct (example); (5) slide the new toe kick over the duct; (6) attach the toe kick to the cabinet; (7) attach the vent cover to the toe kick. "contractor installed a copper pipe...and it's sticking out pretty far" The pipe IS going to be copper. The finish on the fixtures is irrelevant. It's better that the pipe be too long than too short. If you ever have to cut off a valve to replace it and the remaining pipe is too short, you'll be in trouble. (Here's a video that shows how to replace a valve.)

Lascatx, how long were your toes and foot swollen? I spend most of the day in bed and I think this morning I could tell the toes felt better. Until I did a load of laundry about an hour ago, had to water plants so I carried them one by one to the sink and back. Oh, and I cleaned the counter tops. DH does the dishwasher but he's allergic to cleaning by hand. :) Now several of the toes are throbbing like crazy, so next time I have a lengthy chore to do, I'll put the boot on. I bought an amazing pair of garden shoes a couple of years ago that I keep next to the bed and I wore those to the doctor's office and noticed they were nice and firm and have a thick rubber sole. Putting the boot on takes forever and I cannot bend much because of the hurt quad. I just noticed Amazon sells this memory foam leg support and elevation pillow. That's what I need! Rae, I don't think it's a ligament issue, which is a sprain which I've had before. I don't think I told this funny story above, if so, please forgive me. Monday nights were mom's bowling nights and dad was in charge of me and I brother. One night we had a couple of friends over and were playing hide and seek in the basement where you can run to home base before you're caught. I ran in and slid on purpose like a baseball player and sprained the heck out of my ankle. Dad took me to the ER, they said to start soaking the ankle. He brings me a large pot of water, and it was HOT water. LOL My ankle probably doubled in size. Lower back now has a bit of pain, not the usual back pain I get. Sitting in a chair makes my toes hurt.

A friend had bunion surgery on one foot. It was extensive, and the recovery was slow. A year later, she can hardly see any benefit and has decided against having the other foot done.

Your problem sounds less dramatic, but having to hop around for weeks would be annoying -- even dangerous. I'd ask how long the recovery is and how permanent the 'fix' will be.

This getting old is no fun. I know the young heal faster, but I suspect there's less advantage in that once you're already a Senior. (Would be interesting to know the cut-off age for real advantage!)

I just got all distracted reading on another site when I went to find out. So the person had major hammertoe. She had surgery done that required wires and six weeks recovery. She really didn't want to do it again. Until her surgeon said, it's different now. 15 minutes, a bandage and she was putting weight on the foot the same day. So maybe it's like the more recent surgery the author had? That'd be good. And on another site, it agreed with mary, have it done sooner rather than later to avoid worsening. Something about it causing balance problems. That, could be a really bad thing and you would want to avoid it..

Purely for arming you with knowledge.

Thanks, everyone. I think I will get it done as it could get worse. He said it would be just a couple day's recovery, easy. I just see it pushing the other toe which will push the other toe...blah blah blah. lol...

Please let us know how you do. I am facing a similar situation, and am concerned about balance. I have huge bunions also, but feel that surgery would not help for any length of time. But I feel other toes crossing, especially in bed.
