Canadian Gals - What Happened to Marilyn on City Line?

I just got back to watching City Line and there's no Marilyn. Anybody know what happened to her? Heard one of the guest hosts say that they have to get another host for the show. I really enjoyed Marilyn on the show and it doesn't seem quite the same without her.

Marilyn Denis leaving CityLine

Marilyn Denis is leaving Citytv's CityLine, although she's sticking with her current employer, which technically now is CTV.

If that sounds confusing, well, it is.

But as a viewer, what you need to know is this: In the coming months, Denis' 19-year run as the host of the afternoon CityLine on Citytv will come to an end. She quickly will re-emerge, however, with her own daytime show on CTV, likely later this year.

"She's a CTV employee," CTV's vice-president of communications Scott Henderson said yesterday.

"She's a CTV on-air personality and she is continuing with CityLine during the transitional stage, but when her commitment with City-Line ends, she will continue with CTV."

When Henderson mentions the "transitional stage," he's referring to the takeover of the former CHUM empire by CTV, as well as the concurrent severing of the old CHUM-City alliance.

The five Citytv stations across Canada were to have been part of CTV's $1.7-billion purchase of CHUM.

Last year, however, the CRTC ruled the Citytv stations could not remain with CTV. Those five Citytv stations subsequently were sold to Rogers for $375 million.

Denis technically was a CHUM employee, and she still does a morning radio show on CHUM-FM (which now also is owned by CTV). So the new reality as far as CityLine goes is that Denis presently is a CTV employee doing a show for Rogers.

Obviously, that's not a situation that could continue forever.

"Although it is too premature to publicly share details of our future plans for CityLine, we are working hard on exciting new concepts for the future," said Jamie Haggarty, the vice-president and general manager of Citytv Toronto. "We will miss Marilyn. However, we are enthusiastic about the opportunities that lie ahead."

When asked if any dates have been set for Denis' transition, Henderson said, "There's no timeline. It's not like there's a specific contract or commitment. For example, CP24 now is a CTV station that still is airing CityNews, so we're still in the transitional stage.

"There's a little bit of sharing going on. But ultimately, when Marilyn's time at City-Line ends, she'll stay with CTV."

I liked Marilyn. That's a shame. :(

All summer they've been running CityLine using different women as guest hosts. e.g. Dina from Breakfast Television (in Toronto) as well as Jennifer Valentine, Catherine Humphries etc.

The new show starts Monday at 9am now (vs 10 am that it used to be) with the new host. Marilyn has her new show starting in Sept as well. A daytime talk show on CTV. I'm not sure when that is starting or who the new permanent host will be on CityLine.

All this talk of "purging binges" makes me feel queasy. It sounds like an eating disorder. ; ) Mora, sounds like good advice. I've unraveled my poor scarf so many times, I'm worried the yard will wear down before I ever get to wrap it around my neck in scarf form. I suppose technically one end is no longer virgin wool. So far, only one cat wants to eat the yarn, the other two can't be bothered. I was up late the other night struggling with a mysterious increase and I looked around and felt like I was in a picture. I had the faux-fire going and a cat sleeping on my lap, it was nice. Marilyn, I keep forgetting to say thanks for your encouragement. I think now that I have at least a basic grasp of the knit stitch (and I'm a master at casting on...grr), that darn crochet stitch I could never figure out is starting to make sense, so maybe I'll pick that up again too. I have watched those on-line knitting videos so many times late at night that they have started looking like peculiar art films. Two hands wafting and knitting against a red background. It's the best thing to induce sleep I've found in years! Do I remember Dawn? Of course! I lurk on her blog now and then, she's a hoot. I like being able to peek over her shoulder and see how the adventurous half live. She's amazing. I hope you have fun in your knitting group. For me, the best part of the small group here is that we are incredibly diverse and all eager to share our opinions on just everything. The knitting lessons aren't too bad either. Diana, that's rich! Heck, I'm glad that the egg is being enjoyed. Beatrice has squirreled away the leftover cotton balls, we keep finding them everywhere.

Not much to report - more of the "same old - same old". Planned with son and partner, who have attended pizza and movie night at church a couple of times, to help to provide the salad and fixings to go along with the pizza next Saturday night, as another guy had asked me whether I'd help, but neither of us are familiar with the nuances of salad-making, and he said that he'd ask a lady who's *very* involved with church to help, and I thought it not too great to add to her burden. Since that ... the guy didn't show at a meeting at church this morning, as his father'd just died, so he's gone to deal with that. Otherwise, have been helping to dismantle and move a friend's goods from his apt., much of it to my place (basement and shed, mostly) ... ... as he's dealing with an outdated legal issue in another province, and may be out of commission for a while, as in "indeterminate period". Through the snow and wind to the library and other errands ... ... and watching the short-haired dog that I'm looking after for said friend, as she goes out to pee, etc. ... ... teeth chattering as she goes ... or is that "goes"? She likes to go into the shed where the car is parked to bark at the cat. Which cat is "hosting" a companion in recent days ... that heads for the rafters when the dog appears. Could spring be coming, do ya figger (the resident cat is a female)? As I've been reading of the concerns and triblations of many of the posters here ... am very thankful that my good health is continuing, thus far unabated. Ran out of (diuretic) pills the other day - pharmacy is faxing the doc to get a refill, gave me a 30 day supply - drug benefit pays something over half of the approx. $10.00 fee. As an aside ... fleece-lined gloves have been resident in my overcoat pocket for a couple of weeks. Plus ... renewed the duct tape on one of my overshoes, as the earlier application was getting quite bedraggled. ole joyful

Janie, no, no babies. There is a little donkey there that doesn't look very good, but he is about two months old, and so he will probably live, since he has lasted that long. I don't think his mother has much milk, but we wouldn't be able to get him to nurse this jenny, and, too, I am sure his mama loves him. I wouldn't want to stress her by taking her baby away. However, I have taken another donkey from the pasture...or, rather, she took it on herself to get in the corral, and so now I feed and take care of her, and she is in foal. I don't think it will come for about a month, so maybe the weather will cool off a little by then. This is just an awful time of year for foals to be born, but since they are all pasture bred, they can come any time, and I have seen a couple of other jennies that are very heavy in foal, and due soon. There is also a new black baby born last week. It is so precious. I am going to feed the mother every time she comes up, and maybe she will start coming up all the time.

Rather than one person/household getting one generator on their own, it seems to me to make sense for half a dozen near neighbours to get a somewhat larger one together ... which would mean that it would be probable that at least one of the six would have a place to store it. Usually when there's a prolonged power outage, at least some of the people concerned would not be going to work and could haul it around from house to house to plug in for some power - four hours or so of the 24 (or, if four owners, six hours per household). If someone moves away or does not wish to continue to participate, either the others of the crew have a waiting list, or go looking for a replacement at the time ... or kick in enough cash each to buy out the departing person's share. A number of local farmers bought a generator that they drive from the tractor, and have a switch-over at their service pole, so that they can disengage the power from the line and plug it in to the generator hook-up. That would make sense, for when I went from house to house generating in a power outage in this area (ice storm() over 30 years ago, many wanted me to hook into the furnace ... but I dared not do that, for most are hooked directly into the main service box, and if we disengaged the furnace switch, then put clamps on the line to the furnace ... and for some reason the switch back to the line got engaged ... there's no way that I want to send power back out into a line that hydro service guys understand to be dead! People get killed, that way! But if the householders could disconnect from the line, and hook easily into the generator, they could use furnace, etc. as well ... and the larger generator that several could buy when working together would allow this (not blow out a smaller generator when they tried to overload it). More rain last evening - to cause more trouble for my already blighted tomatoes! ole joyful

Sure wish we could subscribe to Canadian TV here in the states. I love alot of their programs.

When I lived in Buffalo, we could pick up three Canadian TV channels. I loved their shows. They had many US shows and always had episodes on before the regular US channels did. I could see brand-new Star Treks on Monday instead of waiting til Thursday night.

Two of my favorite Canadian-made TV shows were "The Pig and Whistle", an entertainment-variety show and "The Beachcombers", a great family show. OJ or anybody else remember these great shows? They were on in the 60's and 70's.

The pig and whistle! Wow, I vaguely remember that as a teeny kid.
I never got into the Beachcombers but it had a large following.

The biggie home-grown Canadian show is Corner Gas. It's been on for about 6 yrs, and this is it's last season. Real high in the ratings and they want to leave on a high point.

I love cooking shows and the FoodNetwork has good cooks but a LOT of repeats. I guess Barefoot doesn't sell a lot of her shows to us.
There are far too many Restaurant makeovers and top chef shows and not enough cooking shows IMO. I would love to have more of the US cooking stations here, I'm sure there is more variety.

I wrote to CityLine to see who the new host would be. I thought the new one was supposed to be starting this morning.

I received a response, and they still haven't decided who it will be, but they will make a decision soon. They've also changed the time from 10 to 9 am. They feel this is a better timeslot, so it immediately follows Breakfast Television and will keep the Canadian content constant.

Just thought I'd let you know...
