Have you used eBay's Global Shipping Program?

I sold an item on eBay to a buyer in France this morning, and was informed that it will ship under eBay's Global Shipping Program. EBay will notify the buyer of the shipping fee, and when he pays I'll be told to ship the item to an address in Kentucky. I'll be paid the domestic shipping fee I stated in my listing.

I'm not aware of signing up for Global Shipping, but apparently it's one of these things where you have to uncheck a box in order to opt out of it.

It sounds easy, although a little time-consuming as far as the package is concerned. If it's as hassle-free as they say it is, I'll probably use it again. How about other eBay sellers at the KT--have you tried it?

I have not tried it yet. I always uncheck the box they have checked for you. I don't sell much to International bidders mainly because it was a lot of trouble, but I might think about it now.

I agree, selling internationally can be a nuisance. But it can greatly improve your odds of making a sale. For instance, when I listed a lot of vintage playing cards some years ago, most of them ended up going to Australia and Japan.

More recently I've found that the USPS website makes the whole Customs forms process easier than it used to be. But eBay's Global Shipping sounds easier still. I just don't know how much of a fee they're going to charge me.

This is what eBay says about Global Shipping seller fees:

The final value fee is based on the final price of the item, shipping charges to the US shipping center, and any other amounts you may charge the buyer. Sales tax is not included.

I'm not sure I even understand that. :-)

As a web designer who specializes in horticultural websites, I have experience with this situation! This is a big issue with web designers. Images are very easy for thieves to find. All they have to do is search Google Images. It helps if you don't put the name of the plant near the picture because then the Google Image spider doesn't know its name. But a plant without a name? Very unlikely. You can complain to the company that hosts the offender's website and they should insist that the stolen image(s) be removed or they will cancel their hosting. I can't imagine that working very often. E-Bay has a host of workers who are working to keep up the reputation of E-Bay. So by all means complain to them!!!! Printing your name on the image would help, as it takes some effort to remove it. I use a "no right click" script on every webpage. It means that people cannot simply right click and save the image. However this only works for websites. I have noticed that there is at least one image hosting website that does not allow right clicks. At this moment I cannot think which one it is, but do a Google search for "image hosting" or "photo albums" and test for yourself. I am not sure, but I am under the impression that the "no right click" script stops the Google Image spider for grabbing the image for its index. Since I have set up pages with this script I no longer see the pics in Google Images. One of the reasons I stopped blogging is because there is no way to protect my images. An image-laden website that I do a lot of work for has had numerous images stolen before I put the "no right click" script in place. Since then none of the new images have been stolen. The worst thing about having images stolen is that if the viewer sees an image on two commercial sites, then how are they supposed to be able to determine who the thief is and who took the original? So both sites can potentially look bad. It would also be worth it for many of us to contact this forum and ask if images can be protected when placed on the forums here.

the reason why a 'clean' feedback record is achieved is because this jerk strings you out until beyond 90 days and you can no longer leave feedback. he has an endless string of his likely prostitute "girlfriends" answer his cell phone when you call to check on your order. sooooo, by the time he is done stringing you out 90+ days on ebay (can't leave feedback) and at the point of time where i lost THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS with this Harry Slime Man, paypal would not allow you to file any claims outside of 90 days. this is a con artist, the kin of an allegedly reputable LARGE appliance dealing chain in the St. Louis area. somehow Harry learned the ropes of the business and then got hooked up with damaged garbage that fell off the back of a truck and has pretty stock photos on ebay and what you get, IF you get anything is pure trash. we got TEN loads out of our dishwasher. he totally ripped us off on THREE pieces that we ordered and never received whatsoever the wonderful lengthy comments from "ashley" is the same blow up doll nobody who harry hands his cell phone to when the heat gets on and she (there's more than one of her) pretends to care, write down your information and "harry will get back to you". in this day and age of alleged consumer protection, i don't understand how this guy is still in business, if he is at all. the better business bureau was COMPLETELY WORTHLESS when i contacted them and i guess it goes to how much his rich family will bribe the BBB to keep his record clean. normally when you have numerous if not 1 out of 2 people this guy deals with complaining about being gypped for hundreds / thousands, the BBB rating would suffer. But the BBB is as bad as Harry Slime Man himself- just a bunch of slick talking bums. I have a feeling that the Slyman furniture dealerships do not want black sheep Harry in their outfit so they feed him the garbage by product from their business and then he goes off and rooks people on ebay for it. I never got any settlement on any of this. Harry pursued the sale and then dried up and blew away when our crap was never sent. what was eventually sent was different stuff and only ONE out of SIX appliances ever worked beyond a month. multiple ones were dead out of the box and more than one piece just was never sent at all. Like I said- by the time he strings you along for four months there's NO RECOURSE for you- so BE WARNED. if you don't get your items within a couple weeks time, file a chargeback and move on. I have no idea how this guy ever made it with a rotten reputation even through the year 2015 with the same MO, attentive customer service and then hookers answering his phone every once in a while and you just get shafted mercillessly after he strings you out past 90 days He may be OUT of business or processing payments OFF paypal (WARNING SIGN) now that paypal's chageback period is 180 days.

it's a dying business model Understatement of the year! I joined eBay in 1998, as a buyer. Then I started selling collectibles in 2000, and it was great. Easy to list items, reasonable fees, and the vast majority of buyers and sellers were good honest folks. As time has gone by, eBay, (also known as FeeBay and GreedBay among other names..), has instituted so many awful changes and probable illegal practices that it is indeed in its death throes as an Online Auction Site. It is very close to becoming the Walmart of the Internet. Actually I apologize to Walmart, that comparison is an insult to them. Picture a fabulous flea market, with all kinds of items and happy buyers and sellers. As time goes on, some bad buyers and sellers show up, but the community of good buyers and sellers are able to help each other avoid the bad apples. Then the owner of the real estate where this flea market takes place decides he wants a bigger cut, and raises the rent he charges the sellers. Numerous times. To keep the customers coming in, he squelches every opportunity for the good buyers and sellers to keep the flea market pleasant and honest. He institutes a blanket "The Customer is Always Right" policy, which opens the sellers to outright fraud by bad buyers. Sellers are forced to ship items *before receiving payment*, and they just have to hope that the buyer doesn't falsely claim the item was broken or never received. Then, when it is obvious that the sale went well, and the buyer is happy, the seller has to wait until The Boss decides to give them their money. When a seller is defrauded, they are not allowed to warn the rest of the community. The system that used to make this work has been changed, so the sellers are not allowed to talk about bad buyers. Ever greedy, The Boss forces the sellers to funnel any money they get from buyers through his bank, so he can take another cut. If they don't comply, he offs them. (yes, soon sellers will get kicked off of eBay for not using their money launderer. Gee, it's beginning to sound like MafiaBay.) In the end, which is very soon, the wonderful flea market will become a dumping ground for wholesalers, liquidators, and thugs. And the top brass at eBay are the biggest thugs of all. If you think I'm just being a cynic, log onto eBay and read the Community Forums, specifically the Auction Listings and Paypal forums. It's very sad. Many sellers have left, more than I've ever seen. I regularly shop for a specific type of item, and in the past 6 months, the listings have gone from an average of 1500 to an average of 300. New auction sites are gaining steam. I'm wanting to sell again, but waiting until a new site or two starts taking off.

Okay, I'm reading up on Global Shipping. EBay says the buyer can see the shipping charges in the listing, so I went to another of my items (also listed with Global Shipping), and it quotes about $25 to ship to France. That's nuts! My package (envelope) weighs 4 oz., and according to the USPS the exactly shipping will be $8.88. As far as I know, eBay doesn't know the weight or dimensions.

I hope I'm misunderstanding this. I would not want to participate in something that overcharges a buyer that way.

I don't use any of the shipping calculators, as it seems like they are always sooooo different than I have calculated. I always list the shipping costs right in my blurb about the item I'm selling. The customer pays exactly what Canada Post lists on their site.

Guess I'm one of the "old dogs" who don't trust any of the new fangled calculators.

My thought is that 'It's all about the money.' with eBay and if that means a cent or two more in their pocket (x millions of eBayers) then that's okay with them!

But this is a moot point in Canada, as this service is only available in the USA.

I take back what I said about eBay possibly overcharging for shipping to France. I realized that because I didn't realize my listing was in the Global Shipping program, I left the default numbers in the package dimensions and weight. Therefore, the $25 would have been appropriate, as my package was said to be around 3 lbs., not the actual 4 oz.

I called eBay and got it all straightened out this morning. We agreed that I would ship the item myself.

I learned that eBay automatically opted all sellers in to the Global Shipping Program, which is why that box is always checked. To opt out, go to Account --> Site Preferences --> Shipping Preferences --> Edit, and change your Global Shipping setting. That way you won't have to uncheck the box every time.

A previous eBay rep told me he'd opted me out and said I could ship an item directly to my buyer in France, but that turned out to be misinformation. I ended up shipping the item to eBay in KY, and hope the buyer doesn't get overcharged for international shipping.

In theory, Global Shipping is a great way to attract more buyers to your item. But I've been reading a lot of complaints.

Of the twelve trouble free orders I have shipped to this e bay global (Texas USA Based co) I Had one Issue ~ The customer contacted me for help ~ The customer in Germany (I In the USA) Said " I Never Got My CD " I Suggested & Helped Him Contact E BAY GLOBAL ~ They Resolved the case & Told Me I was Fine & Assured with an E Mail That The case was closed & NO NO Refund would be taken from me as Lost In The mail Claims are E Bay Global Issues ~ Well Today (I Tripped into a Refund From me to e bay global) ... NO NOTICE TO ME ! JUST STOLEN FROM MY ACCOUNT ! SO I E- MAILED THE CUSTOMER THIS LETTER ::

Disgusted with ebay when they started taking a part of the shipping, which they do absolutely NOTHING to deserve a fee for. They nibble away at normal people trying to make a few bucks profit. It's less hassle to throw an item away than to mess with ebay.

Are they taking a cut of the shipping? How much? I didn't know that, but then I try to offer free shipping whenever possible. I do enjoy selling on eBay and Amazon.
