How about Escape games? You find things and use clues to get out of a room.

I buy apps like keyboard app SwiftKey, utilities apps, tools, I have never paid for a game however.
Try a Google search for top pay apps for android, you might find something you like.
If you listen to music go for the pro version of some of the music apps like mx player pro, , or the pro version of the weather apps the pay version usually has a lot more features and no ads. The office apps pro.
I like some of the pro version launchers which have so many more options than the standard launcher.

I do like the UNO game and there's a pay version, and where's the water. I have a solitaire game I like which is free, the pay version has no ads but not worth paying for it, I don't use it very much.

All good suggestions, Raven, thanks. I guess my problem is that I don't use the tablet all that much. I take it with me when I babysit, for when the boys are asleep, and I bring it to any situation where I'm going to be sitting and waiting. But when I'm home I use a regular computer, and the tablet is almost always turned off unless I feel the urge to lie on the porch loveseat and play games, which isn't often. I bought Swiftkey a year or more ago and haven't even tried it.

I'm presently studying for my second-level ham radio license, and I found a highly rated paid app for practice tests. That will be more useful even than Scrabble. ;-)

I'm also going to look at magazine back issues. I dropped almost all my subscriptions, so I probably can find a back issue or two that I'll wish I'd read.

Alisande, Escape games are a type of game. There are hundreds if not thousands of them. I enjoy the Escape the Room type. These games usually four scenes (one for each wall of a square room) and sometimes an attic and basement. You click around these different scenes looking for a drawer to open, a rug to lift, a picture frame to move. When this happens, you will find a key or other item that will help you escape from the room. Sometimes there are puzzles to solve, sometimes you combine more than one found object. Some of these games are super easy, others are quite complex and difficult. When you get stuck you can Google for a cheat or YouTube walk-through to help you along.

I found a very basic one at Google+ called The Big Escape. I finished it in about ten minutes.

I've never paid for an Escape the room game ... you can find them all over the net for free.

There are also Hidden Objects games and I have paid for one or two of those.

I checked them out, and they look interesting, Jodi--thanks! Almost all of them are free, and the paid ones didn't have very good reviews. I wish they would give some sort of indication as to what the ad situation is like. At one point I tried Scrabble by Electronic Arts, a company I liked back in the 80's, but I uninstalled it very quickly because every minute or two the screen went dark and then an ad for Twitter showed up.

Oh, well, I can always try one and uninstall it and try another if it doesn't work out. It'll be fun to try something new.

Look for a game called Snark Busters. It is hidden objects and puzzles, etc. all combined.
