I'm pretty sure if I were a man who was clearly balding, that I would shave my head and embrace the baldness. I think it looks better, even more youthful, than a severely receding hairline or a fried egg on top. It would take some confidence, that's for sure.

I also think that if Robert was becoming very bald, that I'd encourage him to let me buzz it all off. I give him his haircuts.....it sure would be easier! His hair is as thick as a putting green on a golf course!

I have a nephew who started going bald in his early 20's so he shaved his head and keeps it this way. He looks good and he is now close to 50.

Some probably are doing it because it is in vogue. But, my guess is, some have thinning hair and just go ahead and shave it. Moreover, it's become so acceptable, I bet, that men don't wear hair pieces or bother paying to fix it with treatments as they once did. In other words, it probably is a combination of all these things.

Yes it seems to be. My son shaves his head, my step son shaves his and just before my DH passed he shaved his.
Then I look at my old boyfriends from high school and they have shaved heads too! I love hair, why are they doing this? or then its long hair and I don't understand that at all!

Both of our sons are balding, they are 45 and 49, both are shaving their heads. I'm getting used to itðÂÂÂ

I agree that a shaved head looks better than the comb overs, half ring of hair, sparse hair etc.

So, good for them to embrace it. Although, not everyone looks good in with a bald head.

Shaving the head is one thing, some men do it so that they don't have to pay a barber (two of my sons). However, they both have the genetic thing that has them somewhat thin on top.

My oldest just covers is with a cap. It has been a long time since I saw him without that. He has more hair than his younger brothers.

I like to think of myself as balding. Not much on top, although I tell my barber to leave it alone (he smirks). The rest is short just because my hair is curly and it looks a bit goofy to have not much on top and curly-cues on the sides.

I try to balance things a bit by having a neatly-trimmed beard.

My DGS lived with me for awhile when he was 15, had never met his bio-Dad, was sure bio-Dad was bald and was fearful of becoming bald. Sometime in his 20's, I think he just decided to embrace the idea rather than be fearful of it, an shaved his head. Oh MY, was/is he ever good looking as a bald man. He's 40 now and still a good looking bald man.
BTW... met Bio-Dad and he has longish hair and the subject never comes up.

I agree that many young guys with thinning crowns or receding hairlines shave their heads, as they don't want to do the comb over or the Friar Tuck look. But you can tell from the 5 o'clock (scalp) shadow, that some men without sparse hair also do it, either for the ease of no hair care or just for the current style. However, I sure appreciate that Patrick Dempsey's hairstylist (his wife) won't let him shave his head, as I love his 'Statue of David' hair!

Wearing glasses and growing beards have also been trendy for the last few years. I actually think many young men look great with beards, as long as they are neatly trimmed and not thin/straggly or lumberjack thick.

I think it's become 'macho' for a man to just shave it all off when he's reached a certain point in balding. Good thing, IMO.

It's certainly better than the bald front and ridiculous 'ponytail' in back -- or the side part just above one ear that's combed over to the opposite side. Having hair 'elsewhere' doesn't do anything to detract from the hair loss on top. I've recently seen politicians wearing a very 'precious' look, with hair curling down their necks and over their collars like actors in a period drama.

I've never cared for facial hair. I know young boys are excited to advertise that they are now men by sporting a beard, but after that...oh, please!

Our DS is past 40. I treasure the few times we see him without a baseball cap and facial hair. He has a quarter-size bald spot at his crown and his thick dark hair is graying.

I love the look. Men look so much younger and sexier when the shave their head rather than having a partial head of hair. I just women could sport the look and also seem young and sexy. Instead, women have to wear a wig when we have no hair or are partially bald. Makes me crazy.

Bald is bald, in back, in front, on top, wherever.

Many males (I'd say much more than half) are overly self-conscious and even emotionally unhappy when clearings and meadows develop on an otherwise well-forested head. They take to wearing hats even when not necessary as a sun shield. The close-cropped or shaved head is an accepted and chosen style and a way to de-emphacize the distinction between where it is and where it isn't.

Maybe it's a macho identity thing, I don't know. Ever notice how many bald/balding men decide to grow beards? "See, look at me, I can grow hair!" It's just like short guys who go to the gym to pump iron because they may feel masculinely inadequate without having big biceps and tight abs.

I speak from personal experience. My top of the head baldness started in my 40s but it's never bothered or concerned me a bit. When asked, I've always said the hair got burned off from the heat generated by my deep thinking.

I don't mind a bald head at all. I do hate seeing a cap or hat worn indoors.

My hubby is bald on top and keeps the rest short. He says he "grew up through his hair". LOL
