Hi - I'm back in Sacramento, and greatly appreciate all of your kind words. Thanks so much. I was planning to respond to each of you individually, but I'm overwhelmed by your support. My mother was 89 in that photo. For the last 11 years of her life, she was legally blind from macular degeneration, and had only peripheral vision. With typical energy, ingenuity and tenacity, and some help from family and friends, she persevered. I heard from neighbor after neighbor what an inspiration she was to them. One said, "She wasn't just matriarch of your family. She was matriarch to the community." It makes me very proud to be her daughter. I'm the executor, and will be back in Ohio a lot for a while. I'll miss the Sacramento cemetery rose garden, my home garden and my life here, but there's something to be said for sorting through the stuff, reliving the memories, and spending time with my family back there. I was born during the Great Depression and just missed the boarding school era at my location. Shortly before, boarding schools were a necessity in my community if you were to go on to high school. I lived 10 miles out of town and in 1930, it did not have a high school. The nearest high school was 10 more miles away to the next town. That school was 20 miles away and in a different tax district - commuting was not practical. If you went to HS, you boarded at the school or stayed at a private home near the school. Fortunate for me, our little town built its HS in 1943 (with levies on oilwell production), established bus routes, and it was there for me in 1950. A short time before that, say 1920, an 8th grade education was considered adequate for starting your adult life. But even at that date, it was becomming clear that more education was needed if one were to move upscale in jobs or career.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm still fairly young and hope to have many more years with my Mom who is practically my best friend, but who knows how much more time we'll be given? This is Duchesse de Brabant. I hope you are able to enjoy many sweet memories.

Oh so sorry I missed the day, but I hope your birthday was happy and that you were well celebrated.

My mom just turned 96. She is as sharp as a tack, but she would not be able to post here and certainly not add a picture. She did watch some shows on the ipad, though, and managed to maneuver around that. On the other hand, there are any number of things that she can do that I cannot, such as make a nice flaky pastry.
