Hope Elephant Founder Passes Away

In the summer of 2013 while visiting my father-in-law in Maine we drove to a nearby elephant rescue operation. The two brothers who started the rescue operation a few years ago had worked with elephants in a circus decades earlier. When they found that two elephants they had worked with in the past were being retired, they decided to build a facility to house and care for them in Hope, Maine.

Just this morning one of the brothers was found dead in the elephant enclosure. One report I read said he fell and hit his head on the concrete, a different news report said he several ribs were broken, as if one of the elephants stepped on him. Having seen the elephants and seeing how they interacted with their caretakers, I find it difficult to believe the elephants would intentionally hurt them. I'm waiting for the follow-up report that says he fell due to a heart attack, and the broken ribs are from the elephants attempt at CPR.
