Opinions on using microwave with a little metal showing inside.

I don't use a microware often but I noticed that mine has a small area of metal exposed inside. Wonder if you would consider it safe to use. It is only about 2 years old so it is a good microwave otherwise. Just can't decide if I should get rid of or not. Opinions please..

Call the manufacturer and ask. Some of them even have metal racks now.

I know its not PC on here to admit it but I have a microhood with a 36 inch range top and it is great. I think it looks fine but that is just my opinion. I didn't want to put it on the counter and thought of mounting in an upper cab but we lost so much space that way. I did mourn the loss of a gorgeous range hood, plus the power of it as well but it was the best solution for our small galley kitchen. I do LOVE my double ovens and would not would have wanted to lose it to micro or even a speed oven. It is one of the few 36 inch models out there however and they tend to be expensive. I do vent it to the outside and so far it has been fine. I do live in Southern Cali though so if it gets a bit smoky, i just open the side door which is a few feet away from my cooktop. Don't know if I would have done this option if I lived in say, Minnasota and couldn't open my door half the year!

Thank you all for sharing your desks and ideas. I am going to research several options but now I know what I'm looking for. I would love to be able to sit at this desk and write a letter or two. This desk was a wedding gift to my gr-gr-grandmother and was brought by oxen cart from Nebraska to Iowa. I treasure it in every way so I will definately never paint it. Items like this, as well as mirrors, make me wonder about the person who used it and what their thoughts might have been. I'd love if others would like to continue to share their pictures but I feel I have some good ideas now as well as knowing some of the search words. Blotter, that's what I had forgotten. Also, thanks for the great links. I knew you'd all be able to help me out again.

I bought my 24" Sharp refurbished from eBay also. I think the same seller in Luckymom's link and for about the same price. Sharp makes all the drawers. Other manufacturers just re-badge them and jack up the price. When I initially started planning my new kitchen I thought MW drawers were so gimmicky and looked awkward to use. I ended up with a layout where the drawer fit so nicely that I went with it. I don't use it to cook--only reheat (am doing less of that though in favor of rangetop or oven), melting or softening butter and occasionally heating water. IRL I don't find them awkward to use at all. I like being able to see down inside the drawer and manipulate the food if necessary without removing it. Once in a while, I have exploded butter in there. You have to bend to clean the top, but it's not difficult. My one annoyance is that I find is that as a taller person I have to bend a bit sometimes to push the buttons if I'm doing something with which I'm a little unfamiliar, like melting butter. Because I don't do it every day, I have to concentrate on which buttons to push with the "melt" function for the amount of butter I am using. I like that the drawer's landing space above the unit on the counter is almost always a safe place to land something. My old kitchen had a OTR MW built-in with the range as one unit. It's landing space was the electric burners below, which wasn't always safe or accessible if someone else happened to be working the burners. A year in, and I'm very happy with my choice!

I'm wondering if the mfr could send you a bit of safe paint to paint over the metal if it is an issue that might interfere with use.

Well the two I've owned over the past 30 years have had their entire inside made of uncoated stainless steel with no issues... as do the ones in the Home Ec department where I work.

I've never had a microwave that did NOT have an entire interior of SS. They also came with metal racks -- chrome, I think -- to elevate a dish.

Microwave Instructions say not to cook in metal containers. A pot pie that I usually bake said it could be microwaved, but only if you left it in its' cardboard packaging so that the metal container would stay covered.

You are fine. They use a certain type of metal in microwaves that are not affected by the "don't use metal in the microwave" rules.

Mine has lots of metal showing, and, I think, on three sides ... plus around the glass in the door.

Also under the glass plate that covers the floor completely ... but there's a plastic panel hanging under the (metal) roof.

If you see/hear sparking - open the door or turn it off, quickly.

If your worried and I see by posting this you are....use enamel paint, sold @ Hobby Lobby in little .99cent jars to paint the metal.

Is this something new? Or is it something you've just now noticed after 2 years? Is there any damage around this metal area? Did you drop or damage the unit?

If no to all, use the microwave.

DO NOT use some craft store paint to paint the metal! That's a terrible idea. Hmm, cheap paints, cooking at high temperatures, out-gassing, possibly flaking off - not yummy. Even appliance paints are meant only for the outside of an appliance!

The little vials of enamel paint from HL was recommended in a Dear Heloise column. I used it in my dryer and it's worked GREAT in the heat after 3 years!

Thanks for your input....first thing I will do is call the manufacturer, it is a GE.I don't use it much and have never dropped it. There is only one small area around the turntable that has metal showing. I remember using a large Corning casserole with handles and am wondering if the turntable was not revolving and stuck in one position which rubbed the paint off. Seems like I noticed it after that.
