I think it is a lovely idea. Pick an outfit that you like and feel good in. Definitely lipstick. Earrings.

just wear the makeup you always do...a nice blouse/dress to frame your face....are you going for outside or inside studio? or in your home?

I agree--a lovely idea. A scarf is a nice accessory. But as far as makeup and jewelry goes, I wouldn't deviate much from your usual look. If you get glammed up I think it would defeat the purpose of the gift. A keepsake photograph works best if it looks like the person the recipient knows and loves.

Personally I find Bare Escentual's Bare Minerals powder makeup quite flattering on our aging skin. It along with their Mineral Veil finishing powder can really make you glow. This is not like the powders from years past.

I just got out of the hospital and had a meeting I wanted to attend tonight. I woke up this morning looking dry and sallow. After applying my Bare Minerals and veil, a dab of lipstick, gloss and neutral eye shadow i looked great and got some wonderful compliments.

I think that is a wonderful idea! My husband's mother did that last year for her 91st birthday and she sent them to all the closest family members. My mother just had her 92nd birthday Sunday. I took several pictures of her at the party.
Do what feels natural to you!

Call your portrait studio to find out what color the background will be so that you can wear a becoming color. Be sure to select something that contrasts with your own skin color and nothing too bright, patterned, busy, etc.

You might consider bringing a wardrobe change and accessories. Then you're not stuck with one look.

If you don't ordinarily wear jewelry......don't don any for the portrait. If you do, be ultra conservative.

I agree that you shouldn't wear much more or different makeup than is normal for you on a dressy outing. Same rule applies for your hair. Don't get a fancy 'do' just for the portrait.

A good portrait studio will be happy to give you tips over the phone in order that your sitting will be successful.

It's a lovely, thoughtful gift and one that will be treasured by your family forever.

An outdoor photo would be more flattering to the skin.

If you haven't hired a photographer yet, you might consider someone who will come to your house or some local landmarks with you. Pictures of you on the front porch or in the back yard would make the picture even more meaningful. It might be a bit pricier, but pictures of you in your natural element can be more fun and relaxing for you. We did this a couple years back in our old neighborhood. It was worth it.

I agree with yaya a and adella. Outside and somewhere meaningful to both you and your children, will make this portrait all the more special.

Personally, I wouldn't do anything different than I usually do. After all, the picture is for your kids and you want them to see you/remember you in your natural way. To change your makeup style, way of dressing, pose, well, that just wouldn't be "yourself".

I like the idea of having the photo taken outside.

Well, I think that there's a lot to be said about dressing up a little, applying a bit of pretty makeup, and sitting for a professional studio portrait. A decent photographer can create very natural and becoming lighting.

I couldn't imagine my own mother wanting a casual, outdoor picture taken at the age of 92. Not for a special gift for her family.

If you're having the picture taken by a professional, he/she should have some good suggestions for you. Discuss it with the photographer first.
