Meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, sliced cucumbers (in vinegar and oil), beets, and sliced tomatoes. The cukes and tomatoes are fresh from my garden.

We had a nice rain shower, could use more. Thought it was a good day for a gumbo, so I have a chicken and sausage and okra gumbo cooking.
I got some great Cajun smoked sausage from a little local meat market in Louisiana, it will be wonderful.

Today is a gorgeous day, we need a rain though. Very hot and humid starting tomorrow thru the weekend. We're getting summer temps now, for sure.

Glad to enjoy Happy Hour in the clouds. The sun has come out, and it's raining. Doubt there will be any good sizzle this last weekend of August, and a holiday. Weekend #16 WILL include beach. A tasty batch of German style sweet/sour fried cabbage w/ smoked sausage. Applesauce, cukes. Watermelon. Peanut Butter M&M. Some Sherry. Ah, an ice cream bar.

I was too tired to fix much, had a baked potato, cottage cheese, 9 marinated vegetable salad and buttermilk to drink. The forenoon was spent taking the meat off of some turkey drumsticks I had cooked and straining the broth, baked two kinds of cookies, made a batch of sandwich spread and some potato salad. When Amber brought Alyssa over I sent all the food with her except the turkey and broth. Alyssa and I had fun till after five this evening. Lots of big rig riding and throwing scratch grain to the chickens as we rode around. Ended up with scratch grain all over us and Izzi. A good day though.

Old Fixer: You have some very interesting meals at your house. I've never had cabbage that way but would be willing to give it a taste.

Sue: Add some cottage cheese and vegetables with a baked potato and you have a good/filling meal. I like to add chopped fresh tomatoes to c.cheese. I'll bet you and Alyssa really enjoyed your time together.

We grilled a couple of big portabello mushrooms, then served with a thick slice of mozzarella, basil leaves, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. I had made a cold salad of quinia, couscous, chickpeas, and a few chopped veggies.

Absolutely beautiful day here and I was busy all day. Wanted to take a break from cooking, but ended up making chicken fajitas, refried beans, pico de gallo, etc. It was awesome good! :)

OF, I start craving German food when the weather turns cold. My fav is sauerbraten with noodles, red cabbage, German potato salad, pumpernickel bread, and cold beer, of course!

I work for a nonprofit; we went to a fundraiser gala for them last night. The menu included fettucini Alfredo, roast beef and crab cakes, along with several other things. The weather here was beautiful; it was a perfect evening.

A few other German include 'käsespätzle' ( a hearty thick noodle with cheese) and 'zweibelküchen' (onion cake), neither of which I will attempt to make. Too bad we have to suffer with American beer. Germany has abundant variety and delicious taste. Prost!

I brought home a pizza with a creamy white garlic sauce, grilled chicken, mushrooms and fresh tomatoes and green onions on top. It was very good. I've never had pizza with white sauce before. Or chicken. We always end up with Papa Murphy's "Cowboy" (aka lottza meat) pizza.

No need to drink watery, tasteless beer, Old Fixer. Beer from regional and so-called micro-breweries is almost always excellent. Most produce pilsners and German style lagers. I don't know where you are, but where I am even German beers and others of similar style (Czech, Belgian, Dutch, etc.) are always available at many local stores.

I stopped drinking the mass marketed beer brands ages ago, 30 years or more. You know the old adage, life is too short to drink lousy beer (or wine, for that matter).

I second snidely's recommendation for regional beers and micro-brewery beers, I've visited a dozen or so micro-breweries and/or brew pubs, and nearly everything they make is better than the popular national beers. I've also had many dozens of different bottled micro-brews, and although there is a somewhat distressing-to-me trend toward adding spices or other flavorings to some or their beers, most of them are dramatically better then the standard "American-style pilsner", AKA watery, tasteless beer.
In general I tend to gravitate towards IPAs, porters and stouts.

I recall a German pilsner from years ago, who's advertising slogan at the time was "Life's too short to drink cheap beer" I think the brand was Warsteiner. I think I like snidley's version a little better, because one of the times I bought Warsteiner, the six pack was certainly not cheap beer, but it had become "skunked" and was lousy.

Last night for dinner I made a Phad Thai that turned out pretty well, even though I had to make some substitutions from my usual version of the recipe.

Tonight after reading this thread, I decided to make smoked sausage, mac & cheese, corn on the cob, and had a Saranac Black Forest, dark lager. Prost!
