Really neat! I think I could do that easily with my Henckel knife.

I saw this a few days ago and thought it was great! I sent it to my daughter to watch. I'm not sure I would be that good doing what he did.

I tried - didn't work for me - however I always cut mine in cubes before putting it in the fridge anyway - it would never be eaten if I didn't cut it...

I'd make a mess of cutting the sides, I find cutting the rind the most difficult, and he does this easily. It sure looks cool though!!

I cut my watermelon into quarters, then slice each rind off in one slice of the knife, and store in seal 'n lock large containers.
They keep firm much longer in large chunks, and take up less room in the refrigerator without the rinds.

Very neat! I would try it. I think he should invest in slightly larger bags though. ;-)

Fun to watch but wouldn't work as well with the seeded. I never buy seedless.

I haven't tried it this way yet... but I have cut it like Jim. He is a member of the local bike club.

I think the easiest way is to cut it in half, do the first set of parallel slices with the watermelon flat side down (for safety), then lay each semi-circular slice flat and cut around to remove the rind. The rind can be cut off with a table knife.

Jim's method is unsafe for at least two reasons. Standard kitchen technique when cutting something round (like an onion or especially a big watermellon) is to cut it in half and then put the flat side down so it doesn't move when cutting. Secondly, too many times he was cutting toward his other hand, also a no-no.

I know Snidely, but Jim is such a dear old man.... and I wanted to share it.

I have cut a watermelon like he does, but I put it in the sink to do the cutting. No sliding around on a cutting board then.

I just happened to have a watermelon. Bought it yesterday.

I cut it in half.

First tried Jim's method, then the one Raven linked.

I liked the one Raven linked better for two reasons. I thought it easier, and then it was easy to cut the rind up too. I put the rind in the compost, and smaller is better. :)

My son bought a sword with a metal blade; it has a bit of an edge. He wanted to try to cut something with it, so we bought a melon.

It worked great! In the future, when I have a big melon to cut, I'm going to get him to do it. Just have to find somewhere that he won't hit a light fixture (he's already broke on by dinking around).

I saw this one the other day and thought it was so simple.

Argh! Cutting on the platter as the lady does in Kittywhiskers' video is a good way to dull your knife and potentially damage your plate. Technique is OK, just use a cutting board.

And now I have something else added to my summer arsenal (I learned to pour vinegar (I use dill pickle juice, because I love really dilly potatoes) over the potatoes fresh off the stove to flavor potato salad better this weekend).

Now that summer is almost over. I cannot believe our students start back to school in two more days. I'm sure y'all don't. When I lived on the coast, it was Labor day to Memorial day. It was shock that kids start in August here in Tennessee. And now we're going to year round, so we lost another week. Wonder if next year they'll go back in July? UGH!

The kids around here already did start in July on the 28th. Too early I think. I can't watch your videos as I have slow dial up but I do have a watermelon knife I use on my melons. Works well for cutting the big parts. My melons in the garden are not ripe yet.

I did this last week and every time I walk by the frig I stick my grubby little fingers in there for a couple of pieces...since its just me eating it I don't have to mess up a plate...it worked great just like the video!

Well I don't give a flip what snide thinks of Jim but I've been using this method now for a couple weeks and it's awesome! So simple and you come out with a "bowl" full of bite sized melon pieces! OH and gosh, I haven't even cut myself...imagine that....*sigh*

Edit to add: If you can't use a knife without cutting yourself in the kitchen then maybe you should just keep away from knives. :)

I saw that video and tried this a couple of weeks ago and it worked really well. It was a little drippy, so I'd do it with a tray under the melon the next time. I will definitely use this method again. It was much quicker than the other methods I'd used, though I wasn't nearly as fast as the man in the video. I might have been a little more safety conscious though!

I recently saw a video on TV about this, which was quite similar to what kittywhiskers posted.

I'm making a watermelon-feta salad for our book club tomorrow, and I bought a seedless watermelon, used a cutting board with a few paper towels around, a sharp knife, and it worked out great!

Now I'm in search of an easy watermelon rind "pickle" recipe...I think I saw one on this forum!

We love watermelon and feta salad! Sometimes I put quinoa in it.
I cut the watermelon this way on the weekend, but had a lot of flesh still attached, at the bottom of the rind. Hubby just cuts it the way we always have, in slices then cuts the rind of the slice.
