Save Water, But Use More Electricity?

This came up on Socks' thread about saving water. Most of the 'water saver' washers run longer -- using more electricity.

I remember someone on GardenWeb helped me weigh the costs of having a recirculating pump on our hot water line. Maybe someone can enlighten us about this.

The water savings v. the pump's electrical use was pretty close, but the convenience of having hot water in two seconds swayed my decision to have it. When I think of heavy electrical use, I think of heating and cooling, not rotating a wash tub, but I'll wait to hear.
