I have Ancestry program and am frustrated because no matter what I put in, it keeps telling me I have to pay for a subscription even though I did pay. No way to contract them except by phone which takes forever. I too am trying to research the Baker side of my family which somehow goes back to Stonewall Jackson. .

I have called ancestry many times and most of the time, its a reasonable wait and they are always helpful.

My brick wall goes back to a John Boston - 1737-1810. He was a Major in the Revolutionary War in the Onslow Militia in NC. I was trying to make a connection to the infamous Henry Boston from the Eastern Shore of MD/VA in the 1640's. There is a hugh book written on his family and descendants. I even tracked one of them down and my husband and he did Y chromosome tests. No connection at all! And there is no connection to the other Boston lines on the Surname Projects done through Familytree DNA. We found a 4th cousin who goes back to the son of John, named James, as my husband does, and he agreed to be tested so we could determine if the line from there is solid and it is. Their results were a very good match. Turns out that there are a number of men with the surname of Burns, Byrne and Byrnes that are closer matches than any Bostons. And there are a couple with the surname of O'Neill and Reed or Reid that are even closer. All of these lines can be traced back to an area of Ireland called Leinster. Well, that's a surprise cause we thought the ancestors came from England or Scotland! So somewhere back either at John's generation or further back, we think a Boston male took in children sired by a man with one of those surnames. That wasn't uncommon at the time since women often lost husband's and men would marry women with children already. The issue here is that they took the Boston name and so now husband's family are Boston by name but not by blood - or at least not by any Boston line that has been documented. Those lines that have been are close to the area where John was, certainly within the realm of possibility for the scenario I proposed. We know that the line is good from James down as we have autosomal testing for cousins and they show up throughout the family tree.

But through all this searching, I have located several descendants from the children of James 1767-1837. I have also found hand written documents where James wrote about each of his children, including hubs GGGF, who was given up at 10 days old to another family to raise (Kings) since his mother died. James wrote so lovingly about his wife and children. It was like my meeting him in person. I have so many questions I would love to ask him!

I was lucky and did a lot of searching before they got $$ at ancestry....but on my mother's side my uncle did a great job..even for the young a-American man with same last name...(his grandparents were slaves and took the family name) what astounded me was the fact we had been here long enough that mother and I could have joined the DAR....(we have some sort of number) where my uncle lost track was in England..GILSTRAP was spelled more than the way it is now...

but my fathers family had about 3 different spelllings of SPORE...once again I lucked out and met a fellow "cousin" who sent me all the research...

Wouldn't it have been wonderful if each person spelled the name the same? And the census takers, too! But I suppose the ones that couldn't read or write just let it be transcribed any old way and the ones that could didn't worry about it. And for the ones who didn't think it was any of the "govmits" business, it's hard to know what was true and what wasn't. Another of my space ship gggrandfathers was transcribed as from Ireland, Canada, and correctly Prince Edward Island. So did the census taker assume Island was Ireland, did they not know geography, did they just put down the same country as the person listed above them?

And I wish people knew how old they were! A funny thing I discovered; my ggrandmother's age depended on the age of the new husband. Her last marriage age had to be hard to explain with adult children living right there in town. But she said she was 15 years younger than she really was.

marie-ndcal, do you have the ancestry software? Family Tree Maker? That's a separate thing from the web site. You would have gotten 2 free weeks with activation of the software program but after that you'd have to pay for more information from ancestry. The software program is independent of the web site but you can sync your on line tree with your software program for free. You can also work on your on line tree at ancestry.com for free you just won't be able to access any of the information from any green leaf hint. I have been able to use the little bit of information that's with the green leaf hint to go to familysearch and look there and find what I need. Not every time but sometimes. And sometimes when I find it at familysearch all that's available is the transcript and the original document is available at ancestry.com for $$. I usually subscribe for 6 months and then leave it for 6 months while I use other sources to search just so I don't get in a rut looking for the same things over and over and not finding anything at ancestry. By the time I subscribe again, when they have a "sale", there have usually been more records added and I sometimes find something helpful.

With all these partnerships among the genealogy sites, it's wise to save the document to your computer when you find it. The partnerships are only good for a specific period of time and if they aren't renewed you're SOL to see that document again unless you pay at the site that holds it. Save everything to your computer. Back up your files!!! OFTEN! You can upload everything to your tree on ancestry and on your software program. Just don't be surprised to have "things" happen to your documents uploaded to ancestry. Sometimes they reappear.

Thanks for the information==I do subscribe to Ancestry, but do not have the Family Tree program. I am going to try to call again later this next week. I do try to save as much as I can, but I am working on 2 family tree lines, so maybe don't save as much as I should.

marie-ndcal, You are able to see the green leaf hints and all documents you search for and find, you just aren't able to attach them to the person?

I've had one tree, split it into 2, decided that was too much trouble never being in the right tree at the right time so put them back together into one tree.

Scar on my head... ! From banging against a brick wall. You bet. I have a g-g-grandfather by the name of John Brown, born in NC and raised in TN in what was called the "mountain district" of Franklin Co. TN.

Back in 1800 - 1810, Tennesse was filled with John Brown(s). He may as well have been a 'Tom Smith' or Jones. He migrated with a wife and 2 children from TN to southern IL in 1828 and established a permanent residence by 1830. I have one hint from a county history written in about 1873 that says he was the War of 1812 under Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans and mustered out at Mobile, Alabama. The same book also said that both he and his father were in that war.

At that time the USA was a fledging country and just beginning its development and expansion. Records were scarce on the outposts of this new country. Folks were more interested in saving their own hides in many cases. Education was to come later.
