What's killing our weigelas?
Comments (1)Just as a side note, you posted in the "Balcony Forum" and although some of us, including me, do actually grow weigelas in containers, you might have mistakenly posted here rather than the Shrubs forum. In any case, the only times that I've seen my weigelas do what you describe (leaves with crispy edges and/or partial defoliation), was when it was unusually hot and/or they needed water and at this point, I have one that is 8 years old in an 18" container that I *know* is root bound. But I water often, mulch, and fertilize, and it is doing fine. It is possible that although you are drip irrigating, the root mass may be so tight that the water barely penetrates the center of the root zone. When you planted, did you make sure you broke the root ball up? Also, are they mulched? It might be better to water them less frequently but for a longer time, in order to encourage deeper roots....See MoreHelp! DH killed our lawn!
Comments (16)errrr I'm afraid I confused you. My second paragraph was a different plan from the first. In the second, I hoped to talk you out of overseeding and explained why in the third paragraph. I'm awfully sorry not to have been more obvious with that. So, if a month is doable, please don't overseed, and I think that is best. If it isn't doable (read the third paragraph again), then overseed and you'll have a decent stand of grass in less than three weeks. Confirm for us if your final decision is to overseed so we can offer mowing instructions and watering program to get the seeds germinating and the new grass growing. Peat moss isn't easy to apply in that it won't go through a spreader. You'll have to do it by hand, so that can be hubby's punishment LOL. Maybe he can recruit a couple friends or neighbor kids if you have a large area to cover. It tends to be rather clumpy, so I rub a handful at a time between my hands and let if fall as I walk across the grass. And yes, you can apply only to the brown spots if you want. If you decide to overseed, my suggestion is to apply all over since you're seeding all over. Milorganite is processed in Wisconsin and is commonly sold in Michigan. Anywhere you find fertilizer, you can also find Milorganite ordinarily. I'm thinking in terms of Home Depot, Lowes, local garden centers, and Kmart & Walmart that have garden centers. They all sell it, but I really don't know about the co-ops since wide product selection is not their objective. I currently have a Costco membership and have had Sam's Club in the past, but I never even thought to look over either of their selection of fertilizers. Milorganite runs $9 for a 40 pound bag at the big box stores. It would be worth looking at the places you named since they'd likely sell it a little cheaper....See MoreKill the Ivy! Kill the Ivy! Comments (15)I would also assume that it is legal in PA, but you can always check with your cooperative extension and see what they say. You mentioned that your slope is southfacing, so I assume that it gets sun. That should make it easier than a shady site to get something to grow. I am probably not the best expert, but what about forsythia bushes? The one I have in my backyard is prolific without being uncontrollable and I think would be deeply rooted enough to help stabilize the slope. Also I would think that they would be fairly inexpensive and common at the big box stores so that you could get a bunch in without breaking the bank. My other thought was some low growing evergreen bushes. I have some on my sunny slope and they are doing quite well. For the shaded portion of my slope I am looking at planting some hydrangeas (once I get the ivy out) and maybe some ferns. Litrope would also be a good choice and is sold at the box stores. I would consider digging it up now while it is not completely established and not out of control. Like a misplaced tree, it will just get to be a bigger proble to solve later if it is left to flourish now. Plus I would expect to find it establishing other places in your yard (far from where it is planted) and becoming a problem in many spots. Last, I know that in my english ivy is where the poison ivy starts. I only have poison ivy where the English Ivy is and that is a bigger problem! Comments (53)I did purchase my new King mattress from the same local manufacturer that made my custom rv mattress. I love this company, I was able to tell him exactly how I wanted it to feel on top and how much support and firmness for the core. I did get the individual covered separate coils for less movement and the bamboo top fabric because I sleep hot and the bamboo fabric is great for me. It has the euro top instead of the pillow top the old one had. It is just beautiful too. I really debated if I should get a latex layer in the top, ended up not getting it, but if I was doing it again it would be worth the extra money. I love my latex pillows so much I think I would like the latex layer. I absolutely did not want any type of memory foam I can't stand it. I do have the option to let him take it back and add the latex layer still. Another great thing about this place! I have recommended them to several of our friends, especially those with an rv. And the prices are fantastic. So far I have not had any back pain like I was having from the old one. Super comfortable and extremely supportive. I especially wanted the heavy solid foam sides which will support you sitting on the edge or pushing on it getting up and out. I am a side sleeper and I tend to sleep on the edge of the bed, it supports me completely. I could jump on my side and never move my husband's side. The only thing that I wish was different is how much higher this one is. Thank goodness my sheets still fit. I have no idea if they ship out or not but I know they deliver all around the Houston area....See MoreChi
