I've never been a fan of Aug as it's usually hot and muggy, but I still feel sad that this year has gone by so fast.

I'm jumping for joy. I HATE summer. I hate everything about it. I'm always depressed when summer starts because for me it means months of just plain endurance, of getting it over with. Cool weather makes me spring to life. No pun intended !

Hi Ken, Thanks for responding, I really appreciate it! I hoped that you would, because in my silly diatribe, I forgot to specify WHY I'd be concerned about planting nem-infested plants in the gardens. Here's why and it shows how much I don't know.... I read a list by a university that specified "host plants" for foliar nems. It included nearly every shade plant I own: Heucheras, Brunnera, echinacea p., garden phlox, ferns, Azaleas and RHODYS!!! (The brunnera looked suspicious, so I tore them out yesterday.) My fear is that if the hostas have nems that maybe they somehow could infest the RHODYS which are about 5+ feet tall now, and I hope to have them get huge along the perimeter of my yard. I have big-leaf and little-leaf rhodys. I would DIE if they contracted nems and perished or "stunted" or whatever. Also, if they (rhodys and azaleas) are carriers of nems, will they infect the hostas so severely that they will suffer and die? I really don't know! And btw, I did not plant echinacea and phlox in the shade gardens!! The birds did!! Thanks!

Glenn, a few years back, I ran out of room to plant any more significant stuff in my yard (like a tree) and so I moved into common territory around our "lake" (read drainage pond). I planted various citrus trees and a fig. It was for the benefit of all - I hoped the whole neighborhood would enjoy the fruit. It lasted for a short little while until the commercial lawn crew or someone just yanked it all out. I don't know... I was at work... but it disappeared. Kim, I am sorry it has been such a hard summer and hope things will continue to get better. Making a living in agriculture is so hard---many of the market farmers here in OK have had a horrible year mostly due to uncooperative weather and have been importing organic produce, especially fruit, from other farms in other areas/states so they will have something to sell at their farms or to put into their weekly CSA baskets. Importing produce like that from other organic farms means their profit margin is small to non-existent---I see so many of them appear to be in a struggle to survive and I wonder if every year is this hard for the small farmers here. They have chosen farming because they love it, it is their mission and it is exactly what they want to do----but it seems almost impossible to make a living doing it. Nancy, I do think it is possible Tiny got himself all worked up. I'm glad he is feeling better and I do believe our animals have feelings. I also think there is a mind-body connection between health and illness---not that we can avoid every illness, but rather that we, and our animals, can make ourselves ill at times just by being stressed out. Jennifer, I'm glad Kane continues to heal. I wouldn't surprise me that your melons were carried off by coyotes. Here they will eat them in the field, but also will drag them off (and I have wondered if they drag them off because a car comes by or more coyotes show up or whatever). Back when Fred was younger, like in his early 80s, he'd raise an acre or more of melons, and some years the coyotes got most all of them. Of course, he was growing them on the old home place closer to the river and more remote than where his house is near us, and always had more wildlife issues out there because of it. I used to wonder why he'd plant an acre or two of corn or blackeyed peas or beans, but finally realized he had to plant that many to have enough for him/his family and for the wildlife. If he didn't plant a whole lot, the wildlife got it all. He hasn't had that much trouble with his garden in our neighborhood, but it is near a highly traveled road and likely that helps scare off the wild things. Jen, That will be a houseful of pups. You're on the verge of running a puppy resort? Who doesn't love dogs, though? We had 8 dogs for a long time---some slept in the house and some slept in the garage. We're down to 4 dogs now, all of whom sleep indoors, and 2 of them are very, very old. I don't regret the days when we had 8 dogs, but 4 is a much more manageable number. And, when they all are wound up and barking, it doesn't feel that manageable either, but I love them anyway. Farmgardener, It is the same here. All the beautiful green that the rain brought us is rapidly drying out, turning brown and curling up from stress. It is like the dry wind/heat are dehydrating the plants right in the ground. New brown plants appear daily as they continue to lose the battle to the heat and drought, and I blame this week's hot wind for a lot of that. New cracks are appearing in the ground. We desperately need for good rain to fall to keep the drought from worsening, which it already appears to be doing. We're about back to the point we were before the rain fell a couple of weeks ago. I think if we could get an inch or two of rain next week, that would help a lot, but our local TV mets keep emphasizing that the rain down here will be spotty and not everyone will see the moisture. Oh well, the rain has to return sooner or later. It always does. We have no control over the weather we get. I have no gardening news---it remains hot and dry, hot and dry, hot and dry and is the peak of our venomous snake season here, so I am mostly avoiding the garden for safety reasons. I have noticed the last couple of nights have cooled off a bit more than those that preceded them, but then the temperature and heat index zoom back up high very early in the day still. I'm looking forward to fall weather, whenever it finally arrives, and to cool mornings and cooler days. September can go either way here. I'm voting for cooler and wetter, but that doesn't always happen. I thought about mowing this morning, but there's not really any grass tall enough to mow, and the heat index here already was 95 at 10 a.m. so I'm sort of glad there's no grass tall enough to mow because I'd probably be the fool out there mowing it despite the heat. There's still tons of hummingbirds here so at least there's that, and lots of bees (and wasps, hornets, etc.) and butterflies. At least they are out there enjoying the remaining flowers in the garden. Last week we took the granddaughters to IKEA to look at all the kids' furniture so they could pick out their beds for the spare bedroom (formerly Chris' bedroom when he was a teenager, and in recent years a weight room with a weight machine and treadmill). They looked at everything and told us what they liked the best, so tomorrow Tim and I are going back in the pickup to buy what they chose, haul it home and assemble it. (This also requires moving the weight machine, which is attached to the wall, and the treadmill to the other spare bedroom, so it will be a busy weekend.) I'm excited about having a room set up just for them when they visit and sleep over, which is about every other weekend. They've been referring to our house as "home" for ages and ages, but I think it will feel even more like home to them once they have a space that is just for them. I want them to feel at home versus feeling like a guest. Today I'm going to work on cleaning out the closet in that room so they'll have some closet space too. By the time they come to visit next weekend, they'll have their own room decorated and furnished just for them. It isn't gardening work, and y'all know I'd rather be out in the garden, but at this time of year with the heat and the snakes, I have to sort of give up on gardening and just wait for conditions to improve. Overwhelmed? School is really kicking my son's rear and since he is attends one school for academics and another for his extra curricular (loads of kids in Nashville do this), two schools are kicking his rear. I almost never see him and when I do, there's a flute stuck to his mouth and he's on a field marching, or his head is buried in a book. We have NO hangout time. Phooey!!!!!

Sad. I hate seeing summer come to an end, knowing with fall all of those leaves will come down and all of the work involved cleaning them up, then the cold weather moving in, which I HATE.

I could take spring and summer year round.

What I dread about summer ending is it means winter is on its way. Don't like
cold and snowy weather. I hibernate during winter. :(

It doesn't matter to me at all.
I used to love summer but the snake problem is so bad I will be glad to see it go. I'm not fond of cold weather so I'm stuck in the middle. What will be will be.

Well, I like the nice days of summer but I also like winter, so if we get though this very hot and humid time it does not matter a lot to me. I guess No. 3 is my answer.

I'm not willing to let go of summer and my vegetable garden, but I'm looking forward to the indoor creative activities of winter. That said, winter weather makes everything harder, and I don't look forward to that.

Sounds like Deeby should move north and OldFixer should move south.

The end of summer for me means that the University of Illinois volleyball season will begin. This weekend there will be 3 matches in 2 days. The building where they play is not air conditioned, thus it will still be summer inside until late October.

I hate August, I sleep less in August than any other month. Sleep less equals grouchy more!

Ambivalent. I don't like the cold cold of winter in Northern Wisconsin, but I love fall and the crisp days, apples, and beautiful colors. It's also the time when most of the lake people go home, so it's nice and quiet. My little town has a big Labor day celebration and the whole town is bustling. Come Tuesday, you could hear a pin drop on the streets.

I can't believe summer is almost over.....it was lovely with no extremely hot days, and the gardens are so lush. I dread the cold winter, but hope Mother Nature takes pity on us after last year's.

I can't tolerate the high heat and humidity.

Crop harvest will begin soon; that means clouds of flies everywhere. No matter how diligent I am there are still dozens in the house at times.

By mid-October I have to remove and clean every light fixture in the place; along with the blinds, windows, and the corners of all the walls/ceilings. I consider it my "Christmas Cleaning;" that makes it more tolerable.

The garden starts looking stressed due to the heat; I'm trying to can or freeze, and I start thinking 2-3 feet of snow are going to look so darn pretty.

So, no, August isn't up there on my top favorite months of the year.

Generally speaking summer is my favorite season. It has as much to do with my husband's work than anything. I don't mind heat and humidity....prefer it over cold and humidity, which is how it is here...when it gets cold...fortunately not too often. I am ready for cooler weather though. I want to work with one of my horses and it has been too hot to do it because she is out of shape...and so am I.

I am glad I don't have any kids in school or anyone going away to college. So glad those days are behind me. However, I agree that time passes too quickly. I don't like getting older and the uncertainties that come with that....not that all stages of life can't be uncertain.

I'm making plans for my yard and getting some more work done on my house....looking forward but not happy about how quickly time passes.

Busy - I have a large garden ... though it's mainly a fiasco, this year, as much of it didn't get sown ... and much that was sown didn't come up, or only spottily so.

It's a great time of year, as various kinds of produce are ripening, harvest is on its way.

It's cooling some from summer, though hot today_ the first high heat advisory since last day of June, usually several during the summer ... we had a late spring.

I missed the Summer.....I ripped the PCL on my knee, when almost healed I ripped it again......as I ran across a street. I'm laid up. I did get to enjoy the flowers in my garden and the hummingbirds.

I also took the Summer off. October and I'll start working again....Oh joy! :0)

Very glad for the cooler temps to come. The heat in TX is getting harder and harder to deal with each year, and the persistent drought is not helping. We try to walk 2 miles a day in our hilly neighborhood and can't do it first thing in the morning, so we have to walk very late in the evening when it finally cools down a bit. And by cool-down I mean down to 90 or 89, yuck.

well since we have to use vacation days to do legal stuff for fil, dreading the trip out of town...he doesn't like the nursing home, his former care giver has been a pistol at stirring up trouble, and dh wants to take a huge motor home with no idea if his father's car will start! and we have to drive thru Chicago!!!

Heck, summer just got here yesterday. Finally warm enough to sit by the pool and get a tan and actually get in it without freezing.

Coolest summer that I can remember.
