Son requested this for Sunday's dessert.
Having grandson's 18th birthday family lunch.

This is Trisha Yearwood's cast iron skillet almond shortcake.

He's turning 18 and headed off to college this time next weekend.

Well, that depends on where your dad lives ... or, to be more accurate, where the plants were living. If they were growing outdoors in zone 6 or 7, and haven't become accustomed to indoor heat and light conditions, they should be fine if you plant them out now. Just be sure your soil is not too wet to be worked. If a clump of moist soil crumbles easily in your hand, go ahead; if it forms a clump, wait until it dries out a bit, otherwise working it now is likely to cause compaction.

Thank you to all my GW friends!! You are all the BEST!!! It is good to be back with all of you and have missed you and the postings alot! Still trying to catch up a bit but you all have been so chatty!!! hehehe! Mike--I remember your move! It was right after my first move. Try doing this TWICE within a year, getting unpacked doing the landscaping and settled in to just start doing it again!!! I REFUSE TO MOVE AGAIN!!!! I do have more living space now but much of it has been converted to inside plant storage for winter. In the spring I may get that space back! LOL! Karma--I will be watching to see how you do with your latest project! And wishing you the best Karyn--if you get to FL and come by to see me you can have me all to yourself and I will send you back with plenty of tropical plants!!! LOL! Might just go to Miami with you and you can drop me off on the way back!!!! Today I got outside when it reached 50 and raked the yard, put down more winter rye and worked on restoring my second handmade rocking horse. plus various other outside stuff. When the temps dropped I came in and baked cookies, brownies etc. Gonna satisfy my sweet tooth tonite!! It is gong down to 25 tonite so I wont be out in the yard early tomorrow. The ambient is 67. The Cooling setpoint is 85. The ambient humidity is 57%. The humidity SP is 45%. The system is set to Cool mode. The cooling SP has been satisfied by nearly 20F. There's not much it can do but run the fan at this point. If switched it to Heat, it will raise the ambient temp and lower the humidity at the same time (because relative humidity drops as temperature rises). I would suggest setting the system mode to AUTO and the temperature to whatever is comfortable to you (72?) and let the tstat deside what to do.

I guess painted isn't bad. The spouse just has no vision. Sees this and thinks it's gotta go: A problem is the lack of wall space. We have a large, awkward space and a weird angle. The triangular room in the original ate the angle and I'm thinking of expanding it to eat the new angle (which is the same angle, really). This is pretty early on in the process so things can be altered, and obviously my scribbles aren't to scale, but if I make the triangle room (which will probably be a laundry room plus cleaning supplies/spare appliance storage) even stranger, it gives me more wall space. And it seems to work with my chimney. Hmmmm. I don't know why the architect's table is so huge in the image. I have a table in there set up for ten right now and it's not that big! In the scribble, there is no wall and no upper cabs on the peninsula. But I drew it extra fat intentionally. (And no, I don't really want a 5+ foot fridge!) That kitchen doodle isn't serious. It's just a see-if-it-all fits doodle. But it shows the space. The goal is to be able to shut off the more casual messy noisy areas--kitchen, family room, and inlaws--when desired. Pocket doors everywhere! The more I look at my living room fireplace, the more I think it'll have to be refaced. I don't think I'm up to that. And we do need to rework the tiny guest bed and bath. I want it to be somewhat accessible since our most frequent guests are getting up there in years.

Glenda, your shortcake looks yummy. It is a recipe that I would love to try. Is it usually served "as is," or with ice cream or another "add on?"

Skillet Almond Shortbread

Ingredients

1ÃÂ½ cups plus 1 tablespoons sugar (for topping)**eyeball it

ÃÂ¾ cup (1ÃÂ½ sticks) butter, melted

2 large eggs

1ÃÂ½ cups all-purpose flour

ÃÂ½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon almond extract ***used vanilla

ÃÂ½ cup sliced almonds with skins ***use a knife to gently swirl the almonds into the top of the batter. They stick better that way

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Line a 10-inch cast-iron skillet with aluminum foil and spray the foil with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, mix together the eggs and 1ÃÂ½ cups sugar, then add the melted butter and almond extract to the mixture. Sift the flour and salt into the batter and pour the batter into the prepared skillet. Top with the sliced almonds and the remaining 1 tablespoons of sugar. Bake until slightly brown on top, about 35 minutes. Cool the shortbread in the skillet. Let it cool a bit then use the foil to lift the shortbread from the skillet. Remove the foil and slice up for serving. The end product is creamy while warm, but firms up for a chewy inside and crisp outside when cooled - delicious either way.
