I HAD to open the link, because my first thought was that she had done something very vindictive to a neighbor's garden, or something similar, and I was evilly curious to see what it was.

Then of course I read it all. And, no I could not have done what she did, but I enjoyed reading it, and the replies, and seeing the pictures. I hope she does send it on to some specific others.

I have eaten frog legs though, and I do like them, once they have stopped quivering in the skillet.

Nope couldn't do it, and there is no way that I could cook anything while alive, including lobster. I have found them on my tomatoes already, I moved them to a patch of nightshade. They really are huge critters!! But I love the hawk moths and plant to attract them (and butterflies, so it only makes sense that I find the cats around.

I just squash them with a rock. I absolutely hate squash vine borers and still don't think I could deep fry them. I do stab them with a knife but it's faster.

You really don't think dropping a living thing into hot oil is cruel? Would you want to be dropped in hot oil? I know I wouldn't and I'm pretty sure a worm wouldn't either. I've never been a worm so I don't know if they feel pain or not but torture shouldn't be dependent on one's pain tolerance.

I think squishing is cruel too but at least the thing doesn't suffer before it dies.

I couldn't eat one. I did eat a snail that someone cooked, I think it is called escargot. I love lobster and I eat raw oysters. Clams are cooked when they are alive. How humane do you think it is to butcher chickens, rabbits, cows and other animals? You wouldn't want to be fried alive, I would not want my throat slit or to be beheaded. Do you fish?

My opinion is that it's cruel to throw a living creature into hot oil and I am not going to change my mind about that. There is no need to inflict suffering. If you are going to kill a creature, do it fast and as painless as possible. And this thread is about throwing worms into hot oil, not about oysters or chickens or rabbits. If you wish to discuss that, maybe you should start a new thread.

lol...I haven't eaten animal flesh in 13 years. I don't eat dairy or eggs, I don't wear fur or leather and I certainly don't fish. I 100% agree with you that it's inhumane to kill animals.

However, these are my beliefs and I don't expect anyone else to agree with me and that's ok. I respect all view points but I still think frying the worms alive is a cruel thing to do.

Ugh - Luckily I've only encountered them once- they are rather beautiful in their own way, but they are huge. I have lots of hummingbird moths on my flowers now I'm wondering were are the worms are hiding.

I've got a big red tomato on the vine right now and I think there's a worm inside, because there's a hole the size of a nickel. I plan to pick it and split it open and if I see a worm, it goes in the compost pile. He's welcome to finish it there! My husband says I should try and cut off any good tomato meat and eat it. I just can't!

When the worms are thrown in hot fat they die quickly, not a slow death. Seafood dies when stored on ice, now that is a slow death. Cruel? Torture?

No I don't want to be dropped in hot oil, nor do I want to be shot and cut up for you to cook. Plants are living creatures too. Is it cruel to cut them down and eat them?

Honestly...if you see no difference difference between throwing a worm in hot oil and eating a carrot, then there's really no point in debating further as it will just be a waste of time. I've said what I wanted to say, and I hope you have a lovely day. :)

I didn't, & won't, open the link, but it sounds like somebody, rather than killing some worms quickly & going about her pleasant gardening business, prepared hot oil, gathered the worms, took them inside, tossed them into the hot oil, & *took photos*.

& then...did she clean her pan & keep it in her kitchen, or did this little escapade cost her a good pan?

& then she posted the photos on the internet.

Insects lack the pain receptors we have. But they can differentiate between heat and cold. Therefore, one possibility is that they feel pain through a system that is completely different from a human's. That would make sense to me.

what a lot of ppl fail to realize is that a garden is grown for HUMANS to enjoy--if the bugs are there,then take care of business the best way you know how..commonly known as the food chain.

What if there was a cat who was digging and pooping in your garden? Would it be ok to shoot it then since it's a garden for human enjoyment? What if the neighbor kid snuck in and pulled up all your flowers? Is it ok to harm him since he's ruining the enjoyment? There are ways to get rid of pests other than deep frying them.

Just cause you're at the top of the food chain doesn't mean you have to prove it. A little humanity never hurt anyone and the "it's just a _____" mentality is a slippery slope when it comes to abusing another creature. It's just a bug, it's just a cow, it's just a dog, it's just a cat, it's just a baby...

Why is it ok to kill plants, well, better to kill plants than animials? Something has to die when we eat. We think plants aren't sentient, but who says? Maybe we haven't inveted equipment advanced enough to analyze it??????? Who's to say? Why is one death better than another?

I know that an insect does not have the neurological system that we have, but since I have never been an insect and since this is something that biologists and scientists have debated for many years, I don't know if they feel pain. They appear not to since they will behave normally even when being consumed but I still would not fry one alive.

I don't like to kill bugs, and I usually try to put ladybugs or flies outside instead of killing them. But horn worms destroy my tomato plants, and since I'm not about to relocate them, I kill them. I don't think I'm going to go down the slippery slope and start killing animals, humans and babies.

I certainly didn't say people who kill bugs will start killing babies. It's more the "I'm the top of the food chain so I can kill what I want however I want" mentality that is the slippery slope.

There's a correlation between murderers and earlier animal torturers and I believe it's partly due to that mentality.

And again, the point isn't the actual killing of bugs but rather the method.
