Book of the Week

84, Charing Cross Road / by Helene Hanff.

For a small volume with relatively few pages (97), this book is amazing. It is comprised of an exchange of letters between New York author Helene Hanff and a bookstore in London located at 84, Charing Cross Road. Hanff began writing to the bookstore in 1949 asking to purchase a book that was advertised by the store and the correspondence continued for 20 years. Her letters are very lively and humorous in her quest to purchase good quality classics. The bookstore's letters were written mainly by Frank Doel and his detailed and concerned replies surely would not be seen today. It is extraordinary how little the books cost and Ms. Hanff mailed her payments to the bookstore in cash, which never seemed to go astray. The mail system is very prompt as well. A letter from the bookstore to Ms. Hanff with a book shipment is dated October 25, 1949 and she replies on November 3 saying that she received the goods.

I don't want to say any more, so as not to give away too much. Although this is a small book, it's details are to be relished for the quiet and really lovely things it says about the people involved and the circumstances in which they find themselves.

I saw the movie made from this book several years ago but as always (IMHO), the book is better.
