I tend to think of it over as Labor Day. Probably cause kids are back in school, public pools are closed and the days are so much shorter. I always hated seeing my kids go back to school. And even though those days are long gone, I still get a little bluesy around back to school time. :(

I think of summer being over when we have had our first good frost and the leaves are really falling.

Summer:

Memorial day, first
4th of July, middle
Mid October, end

At least that's when it stays warm most of the time, is hot, and stays cool here. Mid October is when the hardtop goes on the convertible. Comes off in March, but the convertible top doesn't goes down every day until May hits.

I think my brain is still on a school calendar, so I think of summer as being "over" when the kids go back to school. Here, that is before Labor Day. Summer-like weather is another story! We still have many weeks of hot weather ahead.

Literally, I'd say Sep 22. Figuratively, it's a combination of frost, leaves falling, and cold weather that completely shifts my gears from gardening/golfing to getting ready for winter. lol!

Yup, frost will do it. Plus falling leaves and the first time I fire up the woodstove.

But right now I'm wearing shorts, and summer is on!

Fashion-wise, it's already *over*. I see that many women have already ditched their flowery duds, and the winter clothes, shoes and coats are on display in stores.

Here, we are just getting our first really HOT days -- comfort indexes of 100F for the next four or five days. We continue to have wonderful rain; have used our sprinkler system five times on the lawn this summer. Lake Michigan water temperature is 72F at the shore and should rise.

Summer's over when I no longer go through at least 3 outfits in the closet trying to find something that's not going to annoy me between the front door and the stifling car and make me want to wish I could pour a bucket of cold water over me!

Come, on, FALL! I'm waiting for you!

Funny this subject comes up today. As I was walking into the family room, attached to the patio, I commented to DH "Wow, that sun is really moving south fast!". Our patio faces East and we are 'noticeably' North. Ole' Sun (our planet really) is moving quite smartly toward WINTER. Darn.

When I can't wear shorts any more and we don't keep the doors open during the day. That can be anytime between mid-August and the end of September.

When school starts, the kids are in school AND my water aerobics gets to reclaim the large pool.

We have to move to the small lap pool, so that kids can have swim team, swim lessons during the summer.

We are back and happy in the large pool now!

My gladiolas are just opening...the last thing to bloom here in my garden. I took a photo today and titled it "Goodbye to Summer". Another 3 weeks and we should get our first frost, then snow.

When I realize that my feet are cold. Then I smile. I'm a fall and winter type. Our California winter that is ! I love seeing the first pumpkins in the stores. It means goodbye hot endless sun glare. Yaaaaaaaaaay !

When I see the goldenrods begin to bloom, that does it for me. I really would like to put that off as long as possible since summer is my most favorite season. I do not like anything to do with cold weather.

When I have to give up my sandals and start wearing closed toe shoes. And when I can't keep the doors and windows open all day. I love fresh air.

Nanny -- I agree. I hate to see how fast it all rolls 'downhill' from the summer solstice. We better grab what's left of the good weather while we can. (Says she, inside in the A/C.)

It's over when the calendar says. But don't waste any great days because of that. The beach bag may sit on the kitchen table til November. Then it's time to sweep up sand in the house & car. And start counting the days til Spring.

Summer is over for me when I can no longer be comfortable in shorts with a tank top or wear a sundress, and into sweat outfits I must go. That usually is the case in late September for me.

we already have tiny touches of red leaves on the "junk" maple...and the starlings hit the feeders and where I usually see them for 2-4 days they seem to have left..

It's over when I can't wear shorts and be outdoors through the evening hours. Freezing legs indicate fall.

Summer clothes typically get put away in mid/late October in our Chicago home.

Summer is usually over for me around September or so. I go by temperature. It may be October this year.

If I went by when the kids go back to school it would be over July the 30th for us. For me, its over when I have to make the decision to close the pool because its gotten too cool to enjoy it.

When we can't get in a round of golf after supper because it's getting dark too soon! About mid-September here in the Midwest.

Here in coastal southern California, summer runs a month later than it did in the Midwest where I grew up. The 100 degrees plus days tend to come in early September. While October can have a few cooler days here and there, I remember many a Halloween when it was too hot for the kids to wear costumes to the school costume parade. I remember swimming in our pool one Thanksgiving day while we roasted a ham on the BBQ spit to spare the kitchen from getting too hot. But usually I think of October as being summery and sometimes giving a little hint of the fall to come.

Not soon enough because Fall is my favorite.

Summer is over for me as soon as you can sense the change - cooler night time temperatures, less frequent lawn mowing, opening the windows to fresh air, an overabundance of tomatoes in my garden, shortening days, even the disappearance of hummingbirds as they start their southern migration.

Summer isn't over until the heat leaves, which is October 31, although we can have warm weather any month of the year.

Sheila is right: our heat can run clear through October. Actually June and July are nicer months for us, Aug., Sept., Oct. not so much! Sheila, let's hope for no more heat waves this summer...could we be so lucky?

I live where it's hot, humid, and horrible most of the year. If you dress according to the calendar, you'll burn up. We've worn shorts on Christmas day before. It will be 100 degrees today, and high school football season starts tonight. Maybe it'll cool right on down to 90 degrees by game time. There will be people wearing football uniforms running around outside and people wearing band uniforms walking around outside. No problem. They've been practicing during the middle of the day anyway. Knock yourself out.

Maybe we'll have actual fall weather come January or February.

Since I work at a University, summer is over when the students come back. They clog the streets with traffic, cause long lines in the coffee shop with their complicated coffee orders, take all of the closer parking spots, and fill the university bus so that it gets to my stop and drives right by flashing "Bus Full". Yay.

Sheilajoyce, my experience is the same as yours. We really only have two seasons, hot weather and cool weather, and cool weather often doesn't arrive until well into November. On the other hand, when everyone else is getting excited about spring in March and April, we still enjoy cool days and nights through June.

This year, though, the weather has been all cattywampus. It was warm through the winter months into April, hot in May and June, but cooler in August. I can't figure out what the heck is going on.

Summer is over when I have to start wearing long sleeves and long pants. This won't be until at least the end of October, maybe later. (Alabama)

We have a trip to Disney World planned for late October and I already know it's going to be very hot.

This week has been miserably hot and humid. I am looking forward to cooler weather.

here in Orlando end of summer will be Nov. hopefully. we will be lucky to eat Thanksgiving Day dinner on the lanai with all the sliding doors open, if the cooler weather gods cooperate LOL which is 80's. Dec is usually better, jan & feb get a day or two of long sleeves and jeans then back to our uniform of flip flops, tee's & shorts till next Jan LOL. last year we did not use the heat once and we had only 2 days cold enough for a jacket ~ liz

Summer is over when it gets too cold to go outside without a jacket and there is danger of frost over night.

When I have to turn my headlights on driving home from work

Summer is over when I can no longer wear sandals and sun dresses and have to wear a jacket and regular shoes. I hope that's very late (at least the end of Oct) this year. Summer is my favorite season. Weather warm enough to wear summer clothes usually reliably lasts 6-7 months here. I'd be happy if it was 12!

Although it's still hot for awhile I get tired of summer around August and start putting up my fall decorations....
