Attacked by squirrels!

I've never seen this happen before in my entire life and it happened to me twice yesterday!

It was an absolutely GORGEOUS day here yesterday.... low 70s, very sunny dark blue sky, generally nice breezes... I was playing golf and missed the green just a little short/right on the 8th hole. I was ready to hit my chip shot when a pinecone banged on the ground about 2 feet in front of me. Within seconds another hit the ground next to me. Before I knew what was happening, I was being PELTED by lots of big, heavy, green, *sappy* pinecones! I looked up to see a squirrel dropping them at me from a branch about 40' off the ground. I hurried to reach down to get my ball to MOVE, but the little b@$+@rd got me in the face when one bounced off the ground! lol! It hit me hard -- I had pine sap all over the right side of my face and all over my sunglasses! then when I tried to wipe it away it ended up all over my hands and my golf cart. LOL!!! ok... I survived, despite the mess, but honestly he quickly threw about 50 heavy/sappy pinecones at me and then he stopped when I moved away!

After golf and some pine sap cleanup, I decided to do some deadheading in the garden... naturally I chose the back corner where there are some overhanging trees from the neighbor's yard. Honestly, I didn't even know there was an oak tree over there, but the squirrels did and within moments there were heavy acorn clusters raining down on me -- hard!!! I ran as fast as I could before I was able to be hurt!

I have no idea why they hated me yesterday, but at that point I decided it would be safer to stay away from any trees or squirrels. :O)

That's bizarre! Better squirrels than skunks or porcupines....

haha! Susan, you are so right! also better than groundhogs! I had one growl at me once when I was unknowingly standing near his hole. I also watched one CLIMB A TREE at the golf course recently! I had no idea that groundhogs could climb trees. :p

Hi Fred, Sounds like corn ear worms or corn borers. Look for greenish/brown catapillers down in the center's main leaf. You can expect them to start on your ears/silk next, esp after the ears start to ripen up. Some fresh corn is just a memory up here :o( Dust the silks with your favorite dust of choice. On each ear I use 6-7 drops of mineral oil laced with rotenone dust myself. Happy harvest

Also, squirrels don't like coffee grounds and or chili flakes. So if you sprinkle you're morning coffee grounds around any plants they like, it will stop them for whatever reason. But you have to keep it up in order for it to continue to work, especially after a rain.

@ Candie - Well, not much I can say here, if the roots have been eaten through. You may want to try coating what root area that remains with a rooting enzyme, and hope for the best. Obviously, if the canopy is too big, then you'll also need to prune it back to compensate for lack of roots. I find it curious that the squirrels ate completely through the root system. Around here, they just bury nuts in my pots during the season, but never attack the roots.

He was probably gathering them for winter and you just happened to be where he was working at it. They do that with black walnuts here. I watched one, one time and it was busy as could be breaking them loose and letting them fall. It was across the creek from me though.

Party, I'm sorry to hear about your squirrel attack, but I can sympathize. I have a shag bark hickory tree at the back of my little yard. It's directly over the garden I have from one end of the yard to the other. So I have to be out there tending it from time to time.

Well, this time of year, the hickory nuts are mature and the squirrels take those suckers and throw them down. When they hit the garage, it sounds like gunfire!!! And when they hit you on the head, it really hurts.

Those dang squirrels seem to take a perverse pleasure in bombing me with those nuts. The nuts are about the size between a golf ball and a tennis ball. Ouch!!!

Though I'm thinking a hit on the noggin with a hickory nut would be preferable to getting bombed by a sticky pine cone!!!

I detest squirrels! They freak me out and so do chipmunks. I had one in my house once. Ewwww!

That's almost funny, Party, but then of course it wasn't happening to me.
I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time in the trees while golfing, so he would have a hey-day with me!

I thought only the squirrels in the "Mutts" cartoon strip pelted people from their tree. (Did yours *say* anything clever?)

Twice two different locations in one day is pretty strange - I'm sorry about the sappy cones, that's a mess to clean up and why I keep alcohol wipes in our car and truck.

We don't have squirrels. I've never seen a squirrel when out picking berries, downtown, in our parks, nowhere local. Just a few miles inland there are squirrels but for some reason not immediately on the coast.

We do have chipmunks. There are a couple that seem to live in the cotoneaster that runs up one side of my driveway and earlier this year when the babies were getting more independent they would run right up to DH when he'd be cleaning his truck or outside in 'their' area.
They plant clumps of sunflowers, corn, and a couple of pumpkins in my garden for me too, raiding someones birdfeeder..

Not funny when it was happening to you I'm sure, but it sure makes for an interesting story. As time goes by I'm sure you'll see the humor in it an be able to tell it with a chuckle in your voice.
