Some I have sold and some are gifts.I have 4 people needing birthday gifts this month...

for yard cleanup, I just use an old canvas tarp as a ground cloth - easy to drag around holds a ton of stuff, and I could pile 'compost to be' on one side, and branches and stuff on the other. branches I don't bag, I bundle - cut them 3 or so feet long, then stack them on top of baling twine a few feet high, tie off one end, tie off the other end (kneeling on the pile compacts it a lot) and tie the loose ends together to make a 'handle' - makes it easy for the trash guys (or the landscaping scavangers, who shred the stuff for mulch) to pick up and toss around.

boreal_wormer, thanks so much for the "upside down" idea. I will take a close look at this. a neat thing with this idea is that the bottom of the backpack is bigger than the top, and so putting it upside down would give that "narrower at the bottom" tapered effect that the nice worm bags have. another advantage would be that as you point out, the zipper is super strong, and so it'd hold no problem. I need to confirm that the drainage through the zipper is sufficient--I'm guessing it is. One thing I'd need to figure out is how to make it so that the newly created top opening could be easily opened and closed. one idea would be to make the hole in the bottom, and then sew a "no see-um mesh" type material around the backpack in a loop, with enough material on the free end of the mesh to attach a drawstring. so it might look like this from the side, m being mesh, d being drawstring, b being backpack. mmmmmmmm dddddddddddd mmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm bbbbbbbb bbbbbbbb bbbbbbbb bbbbbbbb bbbbbbbb bbbbbbbb bbbbbbb bbbbbb bbbb Feedback or alternative ideas welcome from all.

Great idea! I like working with wallpaper and have several wallpaper sample books. You can usually get wallpaper sample books for free at places like home improvement stores, or stores that deal with home decorating. My local neighborhood home improvement store occasionally throws all of the their outdated wallpaper sample books into wheelbarrows and they are yours for the taking.

Let me tell you what happened to me once when I drove over a plastic bag. It got caught in the crank shaft of our car, breaking the oil seal. It cost of over $300 to get it fixed. So if you ever have to drive over a plastic bag, look in your rear view mirror and make sure you see it. Otherwise, stop and look under your car to see if it got caught. Our city is just now working with major retailers to reduce the amount of plastic bags. I intend to make some cloth bags for grocery shopping. I've made large lined tote bags out of denim I found on the sale rack at JoAnn's for $5/yard (60 inches wide). I put a 3inch gusset and long straps. These were for large, but lightweight items, I'll make the others smaller. This is a great thread.

Very pretty and looks to be a fairly big size which I love. I too love pockets on the sides of the bags.

I've made myself a couple bags similar to yours but without a closure flap.

I don't use patterns.The pockets are same front and back which makes it very roomy.I would call it a mid size bag.Thanks everyone for the complements.I have sold three so I'll just keep on stitchin'!

Caroline1947; I'm always so delighted to see your sewing projects. You are an inspiration!

Since my shoulders have started giving me fits, I've found cloth or canvas tote-type bags so much easier to carry. When they are made by a creative sewist the extra pockets make them even more of a delight to use.

I've repented of my former snobbish preference for top-grain leather. Now I get excited over pretty colors, print combinations, and washability. Add a cross-body strap and I'm in purse-heaven.
