Arches National Park

Today we went to Arches NP. The weather was beautiful in the mid 80's we had a few sprinkles but nothing to worry about. I got out at a lot of the stops and did some walking also.

Arches is one of my favorite places. We had toured it 25 years ago and we saw it again last year. In the interim, one of the major arches had fallen; I believe it was "Landscape" arch. I tried to hike back to "Delicate Arch" but could not make it without possible getting into difficulty. The sign said 2 miles, but I think it was more. The altitude, heat, and steep inclines became too much since I was out-of-shape. I turned back before I passed my point of no-return. I really did want to photograph it - maybe some day. I'll keep it on my bucket list.

Nita, your pictures are wonderful. Thanks for posting them. Seeing them has sent me into a closet to find the prints of all those that we took 22 years ago when we motorcycled through many of the same places. Wonderful memories of beautiful places. I still hope to be able to visit them again.

That is a gorgeous shot! Thanks for reminding me of the beauty to be found here in my home state. Captiol Reef is a small park that's not to be missed if you get out this way. Much less crowded and still fabulous. If you get a chance to travel Highway 12 which goes from Torrey (right by Capitol Reef) to Bryce Canyon, you'll see some truly amazing sites. Including the 'Hog's Back' which is a narrow road with a 300 foot drop off on either side. Also, Calf Creek Falls which has striking blue water and red rock walls. There's even petroglyphs on the short, easy hike to the falls. You'll also want to stop at the BLM office in Escalante and get directions to Spooky Gulch- this is the site of many of those photos of the light penetrating the swiss cheese red rock. Lots of odd little canyons- but you have to know who to ask to get to these. My senior year of Landscape Architecture school we did a project along highway 12- it's one of Utah's best kept secrets!

Thanks, everyone! Paul, that plant was very bizarre. I had to touch the fat part to see if it was a healthy part of the plant or some weird growth....it was totally normal and firm. If you look closely at the picture, you can just see tiny yellow flowers. Unfortunately, I didn't think to get a close up of them. Ryan, I'm learning that May is a particularly good time to head west, and my husband is thinking about camping at Arches the next time we head out that way. I will be sure to add Bryce Canyon to the list, and maybe we'll actually get to see a little more of Moab, other than the main street! The drive on I-70 from Denver to Moab is especially scenic with the mountains gradually giving way to the canyon lands. There's even a rest stop along the Colorado river where you can get your feet wet! Nancy

We did stay in the park on the west side for 3 nights and it was incredibly convenient to access the trails nearby or drive a few miles early enough to get a parking spot for the others. Then we moved outside the park to Whitefish and stayed a couple of nights, then to Kalispell. A lot of moving around but we did it for convenience as we only had a little over a week that trip. The second time we went concentrated on the eas5 side. We used park lodging near Two Medicine (beds were terrible but the lodge was beautiful). I have heard they updated the rooms since 2017 and they needed it. Then we moved to a small motor lodge outside St Mary near the East entrance and it was surprisingly nice and convenient. I cannot recall the name at the moment. Then we spent 3 nights at Many Glacier Lodge which was very nice. There were several trails accessible frim the lodge. They had regular transportation over to the campground side which was also the trailhead for many nice hiking trails. Good luck with your planning. With several family members, i dont blame you a bit for staying in a VRBO if convenient to an entrance. It allows for laundry, some meal and snack prep and for everyone to spread out a little. And wifi! We didnt have bear spray but we did use Bear Bells. On almost every trail we saw a park ranger or two and they were advising hikers if they had seen bears. We never saw any except on a boat ride late one evening.

best story to tell...we went to arches and didn't want to back track to the freeway so saw a small "local road" on the map (this was back in 1978) so we proceeded on this road (one side a cliff the other a river...ok not bad and scenic...well it got smaller and all of a sudden here we are at a wood bridge one car wide! bit the bullet and gingerly drove over it and made our way on to the freeway...it was one of the best bets we made on the trip! wonder if it's still there??
