I don't know what he is. A black squirel maybe?

He's a fox squirrel. They are grey with reddish trim. They are the most common squirrels around here. We also have grey squirrels, which have white tummies but they aren't common and just in little pockets, here and there.

You're the answer to a squirrel baby's dream, Marilyn. If I had gold stars to give out, I'd give you many.

It's interesting to see a squirrel with no fur, what the tail is like, the webs between legs and body, large eyes and nose, and he's got a tummy!

Did you say what you are feeding him?

He is being fed Esbilac, which is a milk replacer for puppies with a drop of baby vitamins and a drop of amoxicillin, per scoop of water...it's a scoop of Esbilac to 2 scoops of water.

I am so happy to hear that he is doing well! Now he looks like a squirrel. I can see it in his face now. And he is getting fattened up. Look at the belly!

You're obviously doing a great job with him! Keeping my fingers crossed that Vernon continues to do well.

Many years ago the neighbor boys found 2 little squirrels who had lost their Mother to the tree felling company that was unaware the nest was in the tree. They were newborns just like your little Vernon. Since we were (and still are) the family that everyone knew would take care of anything and everything that needed some TLC they brought me these 2 little squirrels to take care of. Marilyn, it was the most challenging thing I have ever undertaklen. DH would spell me for the feedings and I thank goodness I had help because these little ones needed nearly around the clock care. We were totally inexperienced with baby squirrels so we were learning as we went along. One of the local Vets talked us through a lot of the necessary things and the rest we read up on. We thought they would open their little eyes at about the same age as puppies or kittens....boy, were we really surprised when the Vet said it would take 5 to 7 weeks for them to open....WOW! We went through Esbilac like there was no tomorrow when they were about 10 weeks and close to weaning. When they were ready to go out on their own I cried as if I had a child leaving home for the first time....thats one of the main reasons I can't do re-habbing.....I'm not emotionally able to handle losing them....either by their not surviving the rehabbing or having them survive and then letting them go. It hurt every time I went through it. You are one of my heroes Marilyn along with all the other re-hab folks who sometimes do miraculous things that no one ever hears about. My hats off to you.....Vernon couldn't have anyone better. As the young'uns say.....You rock!!!!!

Hey Vernon, I am in the same boat as you. But my human rescuer has not seen fit to name me as of yet. I blew out of the nest last Thursday, and today I am one week old. Just like you I have grown. I have all my whiskers, toenails and a little fuzz on my muzzle. My mom wants you to see me the day she found me so here is my pic. I am a Florida grey-squirrel, don't have many fox squirrels in my neighborhood. Check me out. I will post new pictures as soon as I learn to sit still for them, lol.

Oh, bless you Zoosue for taking care of that little guy. I sure hope he continues to do well for you. It is a big job taking care of a little baby. It's a long haul because they are so helpless and dependent for such a long time.

I'm looking forward to your updates. Will post another pic of Vernon on Sunday. Trying to keep them about a week apart so I can show his progress better.

I know what you mean. I don't really see the difference though I weigh him almost every day. But others who have not seen him for a few days always remark on how much he's grown.

Well I have given the Florida GW members a quest to name him. I will post the final vote when it is official. We both hope Vernon continues his growth and health. As a zoo curator I have the had the pleasure of raising many opossums, armadillos, hedgehogs, kangaroos, and other embryonic young, they are always a great challenge and a test of patience.

I raise a lot of baby possums every year. I raised my smallest ever this year. He had little hair, except a shadow
down his back. His mouth wasn't still fused tho. He almost died several times...like when I brought him home, he was ice cold, and then he got off the heating pad and got under it and got so hot that he almost died, and it did kill his siblings. He was near death. I plunged him into some tepid water, and got his temp down. I knew he would die too, but he didn't, and is a big guy now.

Right now I am raising 12 baby possums and two kittens. One kitten is off the bottle and the other one could be, but he still wants to nurse, so I indulge him. :) At least all of my baby possums are off the tube now, and eating on their own.
