Weird Phone Call?

Sometime ago didn't someone post about getting a weird phone call concerning their computer? I had one today, he was foreign sounding and asked for Amber. Then he asked if I were a family member and I said yes, and then I did not catch it all but something about Windows and could I get on the computer. I told him no, not while I am on the phone, oh that is okay just look at the keyboard and see the CLT key and next to it the ALT key? I was in the kitchen by my laptop but did not open it or touch a key and I told him yes, then he asks what I was seeing and I told him nothing. He said well wait just a minute. All was quiet for a bit and I finally said hello a couple of times and he answers, I asked what this was about and he said it was nothing to worry about. I hung up. Right away he called back, I did not answer. It comes in on my caller ID as "Unknown Number" and Unknown Name". It also came in the other night at almost 9:00. I hung up then when they did not answer my hello right away. Oh, Amber has not lived here for at least 8 years. Has anyone else gotten a phone call like the one I got today?

Yes, I have had that one. The first time I just said no, I'm not going to do that, and I hung up. Then he kept calling - maybe 10 times in 30 minutes, and I finally asked him "What the hell kind of idiot do you think I am, you jackass?", only not as politely, LOL.

"If you were buried in a constant supply of a 'waste' you would be happy to have people ask you if they could have some of it. All depends on your point of view." tox, that makes me think of the old joke about the chick that gets covered in poop, and in the squawking about it gets eaten by the barnyard cat. Or the little boy that cleans out the stable full of manure like he's killing snakes. When asked what's the hurry he says, "With this much poop there's gotta be a pony somewhere in here." Attitude is everything.

Sounds to me like somebody used thermostat wire instead of phone wire. But I don't understand what you mean by connecting the wire "to the receptacle" or "under the white screw". Standard analog phone lines just use two wires (tip and ring).

For our reno we put things in categories: we want/good for resale, we want/no impact on resale, we don't want/good for resale. Did everything in category 1, only a couple of category 2, and nothing in category 3 (for us that meant no tub in master). Tastes change, and these things don't mean that much in the end to buyers - as you know from your own experience it's much more about location and size/utility. Every day you are squeezed into that small shower and bang your elbows while looking at the bathtub you rarely use you'll be upset.

So sorry to hear about your father, but nice that you got a final phone call. I can see how that would be comforting. When I lived in Culver City (1989-1994) I had a land line with a phone number that had previously belonged to Larry Welk III, a helicopter pilot for channel 9 news. At this time I mostly used the name Larry instead of Lars because Larry is what my family called me, and that is the name that I identified myself by on my answering machine, which had cassette tapes back then. At one point I started to get a lot of phone calls from companies that wanted to sell me insurance for my helicopter, and this would take up a lot of space on the cassette tapes, which I could not fast forward through at that time. Therefore I changed my outgoing message to say, "Hello, you have reached 310 377-8855, the house of NO LAWRENCE WELK music. If you think you have reached this number in error, take two Geritol and dial again in the morning." The calls from the insurance companies stopped after that. However, when my mother heard this message, it made her mad, and she made me change it because she was a Lawrence Welk fan.

They do that all the time here in Oz. Don't engage with them, just hang up. They claim to be calling on behalf of Microsoft to fix a potential problem with your computer. If you follow their instructions you may end up giving them remote access to your computer at worst and ending up with thousands of viruses (one of DH's customers had over 2,000 viruses!) at best. Then they charge you $200 for the insult.

I can't help but wonder why you engage in ANY conversation at all with someone you don't recognize about something you don't know. Hang up. When they call back, tell them to hold on while you turn on your recording devices.

I've gotten that call several times--I just tell them that I don't own a computer. That gets them off the phone in a hurry!
