It has been a busy time as usual around here. More work was done on the chicken house over the 3 day holiday weekend. Not done yet. Hopefully soon the girls will be able to move in! The nesting boxes are not made and today we heard Buttercup, the Buff Orpington cackling away and looked for where it came from and there in an old dog house she stood, with a cute pinkish brown egg! The first for us. They may be laying some out in the weeds and plants around as we do hear cackling from time to time. After the girls are moved in I will be bringing a nice big Buff Orpington rooster to live with them. Amber has too many roosters so I said I would take this one. He does not crow, at least he hasn't. He will be called Sunday. Short for Sunday Dinner.

Cheryl and I spent most of the day pulling weeds out of the garden. She also put the sugar and Epsom salt around the tomato plants as someone told about on here. I am tired and want to go to bed, but the chickens do not go to bed that early and I always shut them up at night.

What is the sugar and epsom salts for? Are they used as plant food for the tomatoes?

Yes, it was posted here the other day, one cup of each. Add one teaspoon to each plant and water in. Repeat in three weeks. It provides magnesium for ground that is lacking it. We will see if it improves the tomatoes.

Reading all your messages has been like hearing the latest updates on my three sisters. That's a compliment and sincere thank you. Crohn's disease, Graves disease, fibromyalgia and arthritis (Rheumatoid/Osteo)have reared their ugly heads among my 3 sisters but left me inexplicably unscathed. The family is an autoimmune minefield...LOL. After the ONE night I went home to get some sleep I came back to my father's house to find 2 cars and no father. When your 82 year old father is MIA without explanation you naturally worry. Turns out he had a second serious bout of Atrial Fibrillation and went to the hospital without telling me. Ask me if I wasn't feeling guilty for leaving him and upset with him for not calling me. He didn't want to interfere with me taking my best friend to a colonoscopy appointment Monday AM. I didn't sleep again Monday or Tuesday nights but got a couple hours sleep earlier tonight when I landed back at my father's with Pop in tow from hospital/cardiology office. No Coumadin yet until results of 3 week montoring device show if he's having small episodes of A-Fib when he gets chest tightness on treadmill at gym. Coumadin and exercised induced symptoms are the worst for him. He's extrememly active physically (so he doesn't fall asleep!) although we're having memory issues. Well, I've whined again but it feels better to get it out. I went outside yesterday at first light to rake and do a little garden clean up. It was glorious and relaxing. If all stays well for next week or so I'll have cooked my 5th Thanksgiving dinner and actually gotten somewhat used to it. Part of family will be here and Dad can have his turkey dinner without dietary restrictions of blood thinner. He's all about his food but luckily for me not picky...LOL. All in all, I'm a pretty lucky chickadee tonight. :) Good wishes for all of your health challenges as well. I think I'm going to get some Lavender heat wraps to relax me when I'm exhausted but can't sleep.

It's no wonder you're having trouble sleeping with that bright light shining into your bedroom. The management of the other building may not realize that it's so intrusive. Perhaps you could ask them to adjust it so that it doesn't shine so directly into you apt. I rarely have trouble getting to sleep, but I sometimes hve trouble staying asleep and find myself awake in the wee hours. It doesn't happen very often now, but the last few years of my working life it was almost every night. I chalked it up to having work related things on my mind. Anyway, what I did/do that works like a charm for me is to play a mental exercise. I'll pick something like places, foods, names, etc., and starting with the letter A think of all of the places/foods/names I can that start with A. When I can't think of anymore, I move to B and so on. Rarely do I get further than C or D before falling back to sleep. An example of places could go something like Alaska, Arkansas, Amsterdam, Africa, Albuquerque and so on. I'm always amazed at how well it works as I would think it would stimulate my brain and make me more awake, but it seems to have the opposite effect.

I don't have real compost but I do have leaf mulch that has really broken down over the couple of years it has been in a windrow out in my back yard. The town brought me 8 large trucks ( approximately 200 - 250 cubic yards) that had been vacuumed out of the gutters. I use it as mulch every time I plant something new in my gardens about 6-8" deep and my soil is easy to plant into now and the weeds are few and far between and easy to pull because they are only rooted in loose mulch. I like it so much that I'll probably e-mail the Superintendent of Public Works about November and ask for about 5 more truckloads to replace what I've used. I almost feel guilty about how easy it is.

I'd take a saw to it and loosen those roots. If it's going into the ground this is your only chance to try and open up the roots and get them going in the right direction. I'd likely saw off a good inch or two from the bottom and deeply score the sides so I could get my fingers in there and start working. I'd do this when I had a lot of time, wasn't in a hurry, I'd do it in shade, and I'd have a spritzer bottle of water nearby so things didn't dry out too badly while I was working. I'd have the hole dug and ready for it, too. If you really have to go at it be sure and devise some type of shade for it at planting. It will be stressed and the roots will be unable to provide enough moisture for full sun conditions for the first couple of weeks. I use stakes, clothespins, and an old sheet or floating row cover. And make sure the water actually penetrates when you water. You'll have to baby it for a bit but they usually recover quite well given deep watering and a bit of time in the shade.

I've never heard of using sugar around tomato plants, but I have successfully used epsom salts to stop blossom end rot.

I know nothing about raising chickens other than that I love the fresh eggs! lol!

For the last few weeks I have been very stressed and busy trying to get my entries done for the State Fair. Today was the entry deadline and I made it in time, but now I feel a sudden void because there's no pressure for me to do anything for awhile. lol!

The weather here is dicey this week with rain and thunderstorms.... I need to play/practice golf because we have our next tournament on Saturday! Otherwise I've been doing a ton of cooking, gardening, and various other things. :)

Just got back from a 3 day weekend in Estes Park. Best fireworks display we've ever seen! Saw lots of baby elk,. snow & pretty birds.

Party, what are you making for the fair?

Today I went to yoga, volunteered at the library for a few hours, came home and made chicken soup. We just got back from a few days in the mountains. It's good to be home. Talked to both my kids on the phone--yay fir that. It's very hot here.

I love hearing about your chickens, Marilyn.

socks, my Fair entries are things I hand-wove for the Basketry and Fiber Techniques competitions... plus something I made for the Recycled Craft competition. :O) The entry and judging process takes months though... at present I'll wait for my entry tags to be mailed to me, then my entries will be packaged and sent in for judging. I won't be notified of the results until *immediately* before the Fair starts on Aug. 21. :p

We arrived at our lakehouse last night, I'm on the screened porch looking at mountains and water and enjoying my coffee. We'll have a leisurely morning, do lunch out and maybe a movie later.

socks, I would *love* to show you photos of my entries for this year, but I have decided it would jinx me so I'll wait until the judging is completed. Last year I showed photos of one entry before the judging took place and they ended up making a mistake by not placing it in the fiber techniques competition... then to 'fix' their error they entered it in a completely different competition (which, according to their own rules, they will NEVER do! lol!). The funny thing is, I took an Honorable Mention in the other competition. lol!

This is one of my entries from last year... it took 1st place in the original basketry competition and was also placed in the front display with Best of Show. It's a Cherokee-style lidded double-wall sewing basket. :)

Lots of doctors visits and scans this week. In fact waiting to leave for one right now. Just wears me out, I hate sitting in a waiting room.
We had a pretty good weekend got some things accomplished that needed to be done.
We have been having thundershowers almost every afternoon which is good for the plants and trees but sure can spoil some plans.

Party, that basket is lovely! It looks like fun to do also. I'm not a superstitious person, but sometimes I think of "jinxing" things too. So best wishes on your projects. Seeing things people make is one of my favorite parts of the fair.

Raven, hope everything goes well with the doc. appointments. When we get older, all those appointments are really a bore! Hope all your results are A+.

I love the name of your rooster, Marilyn Sue! My friend is starting the process and the gardener built a coop for her, a coop that is about 4 times the size she wanted. But she has enough land for it so all is well.

Party, that is a beautiful basket! Did you take a class to learn how to weave or are you self-taught? You're talented.

Best wishes on your outcomes at the dr appointments, Raven. I usually get stressed out waiting for those, no matter how hard I try to calm myself. I sure do appreciate kind and funny receptionists as it sets the tone, for me.

I'm spending time looking after dd's dog while she's away, doing errands, (off to Costco soon,) doing housework and catching up with friends I haven't seen lately. I should be in the garden, working!

I love that basket! Good luck at the fair! I am getting ready to take a shower and get all cleaned up, so I can go to the dentist, and on the way, stop and buy hay and feed for the horses. Another exciting day. :-/

Beautiful basket!!!! We got home last night from a long weekend at our home down south. I can tell you it is getting harder to keep two places up as we get older. But, we do enjoy it. We saw so many deer this trip. We stayed an extra day to avoid the holiday traffic. Got up to a drenching rain this morning. I guess I will do some much needed work inside.

Back from the doctor, took a long time because after a storm related power outage over the weekend several places at the medical center are having problems, they had no working computers at the docs office. Lovely!
And he scheduled yet even more scans. I should just have a full body one done! LOL

I think a nap this afternoon sounds very good!

I've been trying to lay out all of my collectables, dolls, die cast bicycles, cars, etc. and teddy bears for an ad running in the paper. What I can't sell with go to The Gently Used Store for charity. Today I decided to move my printer table and use something smaller and the desktop PC fell off the desk about 6 inches and ruined the monitor cable. I was lucky that was all the damage. I bought a new plug and have everything moved except the small stuff I need to go through, CDs, games, cords, etc.. When I do things like that my body starts yelling at me to stop NOW!

It sounds like you all keep pretty busy too. Today I went grocery shopping with Cheryl, Amber and Alyssa. It takes all day as we drive a few miles. I had to buy a bag of layer feed for my hens and so did Amber. She has more chickens than I do. My hen house is 8 by 12 and it will be able to be used as a storage shed on down the road if we don't have chickens. It is insulated and will have electricity run to it with lights on the outside and a light and outlets on the inside. The roosts and nesting boxes will be able to be removed easily if we ever want them out of the way. The inside is also painted, making for easier clean up. It also has two windows that slide open. Hardware cloth will be over the windows and screens to keep predators out. It is painted pink with white trim, white shingles in the gables and a gray door with a door knob that can be locked.When finished I hope to have some pictures of it. I have a picture given to me to hang inside. It says, "Home Sweet Home".

I hope all are feeling well today. Rained this morning but none since.
