Did you remember to fly your flag today?

I used to be the only one in the neighborhood who flew the flag. Then came 9/11 and several other neighbors flew a flag. I wore out 2 flags over the next two years.

Today I have our flag our for the 4th, and the only other neighbors who fly the flag on our block are from England!

Oh yes! We have a big one on the flag pole in the front yard and one hanging on the diagonal on our side porch post.

I love to see our flag aflyin!

What did you feed your worms today?

I have taken to running all scraps through an old food processor, freezing, thawing, and then feeding. I have an old ice cream bucket with a lid I keep in the kitchen where I put the store leftovers and scraps. When I get ready to feed the worms I grind everything up in an old Black & Decker food processor (it's pretty big). I'll add cut up napkins, papertowels, coffee grinds, etc. to the goo. I dump it back into the bucket, freeze it over night, put the bucket outside to thaw, and feed the worms when I get home from work. I dig out a corner and dump a large scoop, cover with castings/bedding in the bin and move to the next corner and repeat until all four corners are "fed". I cut a piece of thin cardboard to cover the bin and let the worms go to town. Within a few days the food is 100% gone. Each time I find huge globs of worms in each corner still working over the area. Lately I've been feeding cucumbers out of my garden that have turned a bit before I could use them otherwise. Since I started freezing, the fruit fly population has really dropped, not totally gone, but noticeably dropped.

Gibby - I thought I was the only one with that problem. Anyone need 100+ unused rolls of wallpaper? (But Hon, they were on sale) 30 to 40 extra lampshades. (Never know when you'll need one) Over one ton (estimated) of rocks. Yes, rocks. How many unused picture frames do you need? Three or four dozen? As you may imagine DW is a 'collector' and is loathe to throw anything out. Most of this stuff is in my barn/workshop so it really isn't in the way but wow, I'd really like to clean it out someday. I guess she comes by it honestly. After DW's grandma died and we were cleaning out the place, I counted over 200 empty plastic hanging flower baskets neatly stacked in one of the sheds. LOL on the typed college papers! My 11 year old asked me what a typewriter was and how it worked. I found an antique manual typewriter at a thrift shop and got it for him for Christmas. He was astounded - He figures I went to college during the time the dinosaurs roamed the earth.

I attended high school in the 1950s and our school did not have a lunch room. The students brought a bag lunch from home and ate in the bleachers in the gym. My typical lunch was a sandwich, a fruit, and a pastry. We high school kids carried our lunch in paper bags. If I was careful with my bag, it could be folded after use and slipped inot my back pocket to be used again. I usually got 3 days of use out or one bag. My one room country grade school lunch experience was different. I carried a lunch box with themos. The thermos liner never lasted an entire school year before it was broken. Most of the time it broke when dropped of when I fell during my journey between home and school. One time it was broken when I used my steel lunch box as a weapon to defend my self from the school bully. Times were difficult for my family during my grade school days. My sandwiches were made with cuts of cooked, home cured pork on slices of home-made bread, I remember once when we ran low on luncheon material, I had a bean sandwich. This was navy beans between two slices of bread, one slice was buttered with home made butter. During those times, once I had a raw turnip to munch on. In the fall, I'd grab an apple or two from a tree in our small orchard on my way to school.

We fly ours every day and so does our next-door neighbor. Several others on our street are flying today.

Yep! We had a flagpole installed a few weeks ago, finally! Need a breeze, but it's still pretty.

Mine has been up for a couple of weeks. My flag is getting faded. I purchased it in the spring of 2001 and flew it every day after 9/11 for about a year or so.

We fly ours every day along with the Texas flag, and yes, they are both lit properly at night.

A big salute to terilyn,,,

As a vet, and one who was taught the proper respect for how to fly the flag, there is nothing I hate worse than to see a flag on top of the pole on a dark night.

Properly a flag should be flown from sunup till sundown..and it may only be flown after sundown if it is illuminated.

Ours is up every day of the year and down at night (no light on it, that's the only reason, I guess.)

NICE PHOTO, flamingo!

Looks a lot like ours in our front yard...we love to see it 'blowin' in the wind' as we come and go.

I found the cutest solar light stakes in the shape of small flags at RKO this year. I also bought two for my aunt. The solar light even lit up being quite near my porch hung with bunting and with the porch light on.

We fly the flag daily and have been doing so for about 30 years. At a previous home, the flag pole was in the front yard and I raised the flag at dawn and took it in before dark. Our flag now is on a porch post and is lit at night.

I didn't know that flags should be taken down at sunset, unless lit. Thanks for the lesson in flag etiquette.
