Any recommendations for a Vacuum that uses bags?

I am in need of a new vacuum. I currently have a Kenmore upright that is just completely worn out. We no longer have a Sears store nearby so I won't be getting this brand again. I was looking at the Sharks and really like the liftaway styles for stairs but I can only find the bag less models. I currently also have a small rechargeable vacuum for our kitchen that has the cup to empty and I really dislike it! It must be done outside as it's such a mess with spills, dust flying etc. In doing some research I was only able to find the Hoover brand that still uses bags but not one with a "liftaway" for stairs. Does anybody know if Shark or any other brands still make vacuums with bags?

If everyone made messes emptying their vacuum canisters, I don't think bagless models would be so popular. :-)

Seriously, Kel, it might be easier to improve your emptying technique than to find a good vacuum with bags. I haven't used bags in many years (and do not miss buying them!). Here's how I empty my two Sharks, and it worked for my Dyson too: In the kitchen (I don't go outside) I open up a plastic grocery bag, place the canister inside, and then release the bottom cover. The contents are transferred to the grocery bag.

Obviously, I keep the canister low so that the contents don't have a long drop. That would result in a mess. I tap the canister gently, and when it's empty I remove it and gently close up the bottom. Then I carefully gather the sides of the grocery bag and tie it up. Into the trash--voila!

Someone else might have an even better method.

I much prefer dealing with the sharks canister than with those bags, I hated those bags, hard to get on hard to get off and can make a big mess in the process.

I do similar technique, but I have a tall trash can in my kitchen. I lower the canister down into the clean trash bag in the trash can and pull the trigger, every thing is dumped out of the bottom of the canister. All dust and dirt is contained well in the trash bag. I tie up the trash bag and out it goes. I never have to touch any of the dirty stuff like you do when messing with bags.
I think if you tried it a few times you would quickly realize how much better it is. And since the canister is clear you can easily see the contents and when it needs to be emptied. Just don't let it get so full that it is crammed in there and has to be pried out. I empty it every time it is used.
I still absolutely love my Shark lift away navaigator pro. AND so does my cleaning lady, so much that she went and bought herself one just like it.
My only complaint might be that it could have a longer stretch hose.

Here is some help for those who don't know which way to go, Bags, bag-less or HEPA vacuums. Tip of the year! I have a Hoover Empower upright, works great. It's great all except for the price of the Hepa filter, $29. I soon realized that the filter became extremely dirty after it's first cleaning and saw that replacing this Hepa filter will be soon and often. Built almost like automobile filters, as well as other paper filters. How I solved the replacement, cost problem. Go buy a roll of Bounty paper towels- 2 ply . Take one sheet, (not the half sheet) and separate the ply sheets. You end up with 2 separate sheets of ply. You will notice how the one ply is constructed of many small fine holes, enough for air to pass through, just like a filter. Wrap one sheet around the round, approx. 12 inch Hoover Hepa filter. There will be an overlap. To secure it tape it in 3 spots. You are only adding a paper filter as an added last step prior to the to the filtering action of the HEPA filter. Save the other ply for your next vacuuming. You will find the paper ply sheet will stop much of the real dirt from reaching your filter, but it will suck dirt just fine, and will prevent replacing this Hoover Hepa filter as often, as it gets dirty real fast. Empty dirt cup more frequently, perhaps after each room. After each vacuuming, tap the Hoover filter to clean out any other small dirt it many have accumulated, and replace the paper ply filter. This may work with other filters. Try it, youÂll like it! To give you an idea of the filtering action of Bounty paper towels, I found this on the website for Trawlers and Trawlering. This filter is recommended to be the main fuel filter if it can be fitted in the space. It uses a roll of Bounty paper towels. The element replacement cost of this filter is always attractive, but if you have a very dirty system to clean up, you will appreciate it even more. In addition, it filters in the sub-micron range and will add life to your injection pump and injectors.

Larger and dense veggies do need blanching. I planch peas and beans, as well as broccoli. Stuff that doesn't need a blanch are things like chopped onions, sweet peppers, and a few higher water content items. Even most fruits don't need blanching as they also are high water content. If you were to freeze broccoli with no blanching, for instance, it would break every green bud off the tops of the crowns and you end up with mostly green sawdust. Most canning books also offer freezing guidelines which are much easier to deal with compared to home canning. The blanch always requires a dip into ice water to halt any cooking. I blanch corn on the cob, then cut off the kernals and freeze. I like using the heavier bags from Food Saver. I just harvested a big bunch of onions and some shallots that were going to flower. Peeled and put through a chopper, then bagged in a FS bag and freezed them.

When I place my 25 pound bag of sugarless angelfood cake mix in FS containers, I used 2 gallon zipper bags to hold about 10 pounds in each canister, and I leave the bags partially open. I used the big 1.5 gallon huge size canisters. I do make sure that the rubber seals are very clean and have no bits of stuff or foreign materials in the seal areas. The domed canisters are easy to pull a decent vacuum on. I use a seperate vacuum pump however as it gives me a much stronger vacuum that can hold a cover on for many months. Thats how my cake mix is stored, and is still under vacuum, as is the grated cheese in the fridge. If there is even a single nick on the plastic edge where the seal is made to the rubber ring, it will usually leak. I have moistened the lip with a little water and placed the lid on and its pumped down quite well. Another way to get that seal to hold better is to use a very light coating of non stick spray, applied on a paper towel. Its applied VERY THIN and would be lighly applied to the plastic rim of the canister. This will help to ensure a good seal, but the best I get is when I use my external vacuum pump. For the big bucket shaped containers with flat and concave lids with the knob, I have has to fix a few small cracks that show up around the knob. I use crazy glue to pull the glue into the cracks under vacuum and its hardened off with an activator that turns it solid in one second. The cracks that form are because I use a very powerful vacuum pump. Right now, I have a batch of vinegar salt brine waiting for the next wave of pepperoncini peppers to get canned, and its under vacuum. Basically, a stronger vacuum pump may be needed. It also may be that the pump you have inside the FS is either dirty or worn out so its not pulling a vacuum very well. The pumps in the FS are quite small, and most have a built in sensor that shuts them off once they reach a specific pressure which is obviously lower than 30 inches of mercury (read on a vacuum gauge). The square or rectangular containers will crack down the sides every time. I went through 3 of them and found that even though they are thick plastic, its not designe dwell enough to hold a good vacuum. All my square ones cracked in the corners.

miele vacuum bags--where to find?

Amazon does not offer their "free super saver shipping" on Miele vacuum bags. They do offer the free shipping on the "Miele style" vacuum bags. In answer to Nolamom's question, I do not recommend the non-genuine "Miele style" bags. They won't fit properly, and if anything happens to jam up your vacuum, the use of those bags may void the warranty (I am not sure). As already noted, the Miele vacuum bags and filters are the same price no matter where you buy them. Even if you save a few dollars in sales tax by buying online, your shipping costs will be greater than the sales tax. I myself get the bags and filters from my local authorized Miele dealer, and anyway, I kinda like dropping into the store occasionally to see what's new with the latest Miele stuff. Also, one time I had trouble removing one of the filters from my vacuum, and the store just did it for me, showed me how, and threw in the replacement filter gratis while they were at it. That's this ancient practice called customer service--remember how we used to find that everywhere?

I've used both kinds and don't have an issue emptying either one. I emptied the bin the same way Susan and Raven described and changing the bags on my Kenmore and my Hoover are easy too - I don't get any dirt on my hands.
What I didn't like about my son's Shark was having to wash all the filters.

Miele is good but pricey...you can probably find a used one. I've had one for 25 years.

I have had good luck with electrolux I am on my second one and I have only had two in my 60 years of house keeping. They do have paper bags easy to change no muss or fuss.

I love the Oreck. It uses bags. It is lightweight. We have two of them plus the little handheld one that came with my original one. Just don't get close to a throw rug or it will eat it. LOL

My vacuum cleaner repair shop recommends Sanitaire. It's the kind cleaning services use. I have not tried it. I use a Hoover.

I'm an Oreck user of many years too. I have two bagged vacs, one at each end of the house. I have the basic model (XL, or XLT?) many years old, and a newer Magnesium. When we bought this (larger) house, I needed a vacuum here of course but I still had the former house to clean, paint and update and needed a vacuum there though the end of real estate showings, I didn't want to take one back and forth with me every time I went even if they do weigh next to nothing.

I've got the Oreck floor steamer and one of their hand vacs too.

We have a Dyson and love it!!!!! Yes, it is pricy, but I think worth it. It is great to pick up cat hair. When you have 2 cats you need all the help you can get.

As far as emptying the canister, we just empty it into our big garbage can or use my garbage can out of my office.

I have 2 Dyson vac. One upright, one canister. I just put them over the kitchen trash can and pull the trigger. Never have a mess. I would NEVER go back to a vac with bags.

Kel, I felt the same way you do when I first got a bagless, a dyson, which I would never buy again because you have to send them out to have the belt replaced. I'm sorry, but that's just plain crazy. After doing that it came back not working as well as it did before. Since it took more than three weeks to have the belt changed I bought an inexpensive Bissell that I now love more than I ever did the dyson.
I have four long haired cats and this Bissell Lift off is amazing! I love the attachments too.
Anyway, I empty my vacuums the same way alisande does. If you're careful. there's very little dust. Having severe allergies, I can say it's not enough to bother me, and everything bothers me.

Gosh, I thought bags had completely gone. Those bags leak dust all over the house. Taking a canister outside and emptying over the trash can - no comparison to those horrible bags. I think there's a reason why most manufacturers went to bagless.

Any recommendations for a Vacuum that uses bags?
