awhile ago I saw-and copied -and lost --a recipe for a solution that you applied to tomatoes and peppers in the garden and supposedly they produced more fruit. It seems like one ingredient was Epsom salt . Can anyone help me with this? Tia

equal amounts of white sugar an epsom salts mixed up-place one teaspoon of mixture at the base of each plant,water in-do this about every 3 wks,

Is there anything I can do to help my winter-blasted yew hedge make a faster comeback? The plow guy hit a section that looks really bad but is alive at the bottom.

I agree heartily with the concept of group plantings in odd numbers. Envisioning the ultimate size a plant will achieve is very important. Spacing must be appropriate for plants to do well. If one takes bloom time into account, chosing plants with that mind, one can have color spring through fall. I favor curves in my garden. Most people go for straight line garden beds. Interspering flowering plants with food plants is novel and adds interest. Plus, a variety of plants helps to foil the pest insects. I get a big kick out of being able to run outside to get a little bit of this or that, an onion, some arugula, or a bit of fresh thyme, from my garden whilst cooking. I have to be careful not to get side-tracked in the garden, and forget that I am cooking. Lorna

George, let me take a swing at a few of those questions: Firstly, modern tree planting tech involves no fertilizer nor soil amendments at planting. I can provide the exact reasons, but for your purposes at present, I can assure you these two points are correct. Simply backfill with the same soil you removed. Second, all woody plants should be placed such that the root flare-that swollen area where the roots and stem diverge from each other-is at or slightly above grade. Too deep is never good. Yes, if you see circling roots, roots that will put the squeeze on each other or the trunk itself as they grow, you should try to straighten these out as much as possible, such that they resemble spokes on a wheel. Only you can decide how much of this correction is possible or reasonable. It probably does not pay off to totally destroy the root system in trying to accomplish this. But it can be well worth it to attempt to fix the worst of them. I do not believe the old notion that, in order to make up for lost roots, some certain percentage of the top should be pruned away. Plant physiology does not support this idea. All foliage supports the root system. Since root regeneration is job one for any new transplant, the more living foliage, the faster this occurs. I am less certain of the spacing question. I'm not entirely sure what plant you are dealing with. But generally, for screening purposes, plants can indeed be placed quite closely. As they all develop together, they tend to accomodate one another. Planting is quite simple. The farther away from this simplicity one goes, the higher the probability that they are venturing into unadvisable territory! Hope this helps.......+oM

I picked up about 8 of the Garden Solution magazines at a used book store. 2007-2008 years. yes I liked them a lot. and looked on the internet to subscribe. although I am very late, what a disappointment it was no longer available. even now, 2016, good garden magazines are hard to find.

Running out of room in the garden

Three years ago I bought my first home, on 1.5 acres. Even though it was basically a blank canvas, I often find myself worrying about it not begin big enough! (And then I look over my shoulder to make sure they're not coming to take me away...yet.) When I run out of space I will be: Making sure that there is some kind of garden action going on in every area at all times. Checking to see if I've maxed out my vertical space! I love vines. They can climb on trellises, trees, shrubs, tuteurs and anything else not in motion. Starting to look for the perfect piece of roof to start growing a green roof on. Planting more containers! And then when I've exhausted all those possibilities I'd most likely start looking to see which garden area I should overhaul completely, and thus start the fun all over again.

Chisue, just go ahead and cut it back to the green - it will bounce right back if you keep it watered.

most welcome,grams-I have used the sugar/salt solution now on my tomatoes for about 3 yrs., and there has been a major difference....and I usually plant varied plants-some beefsteak,some cherry,some lunch box variety,etc.

I have hobby gardened and canned all my own produce for over 35 yrs., and only wish I knew about this solution sooner.

yes chisue-cut it back as far as possible,and def put the water to it-also,if u have the sugar/salt solution,that too will help it

This solution provides magnesium to any/all plants/trees

What purpose does the Epsom salts serve?

Put some Milorganite fertilizer around it in a circle as round as the bush, but not enough to smother anything growing under it. It is one of the best I have every used and it will not burn plants.

sjerin, the Epsom salts are a source of magnesium. If your soil is magnesium deficient, the Epsom salt will provide it.

I use the Epsom salts, but didn't know to add sugar. There is a huge difference in the vitality of the plants treated with it. I missed one plant by accident, and there is a noticeable difference between that plant and the other plants. I also use banana by products on leafy plants like ferns, but also on roses too. Last year I was not feeling well but was also busy with my daughter's wedding, so I didn't have time to do this, and my peppers were terrible!

Thank you. The plow guy hit two bushes on one side of the long 3' high square-trimmed hedges that line our driveway. The hedge looks OK on top and on the lawn side, but there's this 'hole' beside the driveway. This is right in front of my kitchen window for me to 'admire' all day! I'll give it some extra nourishment it the hope it will recover by fall.
