I think this question is about terms. As I understand them, "transplanting" is digging a plant up from somewhere and re-planting it somewhere else. This is not wise to do on a ninety degree day,since you are disturbing the roots considerably. This process will go better if you do it at night, and even better if it's done right before rain. The plant should be watered thoroughly the day before you dig and immediately after it is set into the ground. You need to pay attention to its moisture needs for a couple of weeks. "Setting out" is turning a pot-grown plant out of its pot, without disturbing the roots, and setting it into place in a garden bed. As long as you water the plant well before you turn it out of its pot (a couple hours before is even better so the plant is fully hydrated), and you water it well after it's set into the ground, the plant will do perfectly fine and should suffer no problems whatsoever.

While an exhibitor might change her mind after reading my posts in the thread linked below, this gardener sticks with 28F as being the temperature of concern IF the roses are NOT dormant. Southern California knows very little about such lows. There are always MANY variables to consider. Best wishes. I am not surprised. I am afraid we'll have more of the same today. The highest we've ever seen at our house on a thermometer as far as I can remember was 113 and it was last year. However, I was away from home at a fire all afternoon that day and much of the night, and it might have gone higher. It was 113 when we left and I forgot to look at the Min-Max thermometer until the next day, when it already had reset. On that 113-degree day, many of our friends and neighbors said their thermometers hit 115 or 116. To me, it is hard to comprehend that these are real, actual temperatures. When I lived in Texas, 105 degrees was hot, and 108 was incredibly rare. Now we keep seeing 110-115 or 116 in our state. It is astonishing, but in a bad way. We have reached 99 degrees here at our house today about an hour earlier than we did yesterday. That cannot be good.

It's 93 here in my zone 6 also. To hot for me. I can stand the winters here, but would love to go north for the summer.

OK... I know I have bragged in the past about our wonderful Oregon summer (when seeking refuge from our wet winters).......so, Summer only arrived such a short time ago and now we are having 100+ temps, thunder storms, humidity.......You all didn't send that mid-west weather to me, did you? THAT cloudy mess up in the sky that makes those thunderheads is clearing up, but sticky sticky and temps to 107 by Sunday. Not my culpa tea.
