There used to be a discussion/ chat forum for us rose folks on the old site but now all those got mixed in with the rose talk. People asked about patterns and I like the ones by truly Victorian. All the sizes are included so you can get a custom fit. However they are drawn from real antique clothes so it's not a modern fit and most of them are designed to go over a corset but you don't need to wear it uncomfortably tight, just snug. If you had heavy work to do then you wore a corded petticoat not a hoop to hold your skirts out. Women didn't have legs in those days and they didn't discuss them :) they were just supposed to glide along gracefully like swans as they walked.

Let's see what you have to work with when the root throws off suckers this spring. If they are small you'll need to wait until they build some girth and strength; otherwise it's just so easy to cut right through them. The first thing I learned to do was cleft grafting, and it's still a go-to for me. It works for a broad range of scion-rootstock size discrepancies. I mean you can have a scion matched with a rootstock the same size or many times larger. But if the sizes of the two are close do a whip or whip and tongue if you like. And I really like the way those meld. Sometimes I fall back on a chip. You can place a chip from a pencil-sized budstick on a stick the size of your thumb without much trouble, and you can do it whether the bark is slipping or not, and regardless of whether the wood is supple and splitting readily. Bark grafting is very, very doable, but I've had a few instances where the branch didn't seem to want to grow over the splice well, and the connection seems a little tenuous. But I have a link to a very good tutorial that will get you going on it. Konrad does a super tidy and precise graft that he has pictures of, too. I don't have the link at hand but he'll provide it, I'm sure, if you ask. Those are all spring grafts. In late summer/early fall you can do chipping and budding. These are designed to heal over in the current year and then emerge the following season. So I don't have an exact answer to your question. I do, however, have a caveat, and that is that I don't know as much about what I'm talking about as it sounds like. There are a number of others who frequent this site who do more, and better, grafting in a few hours time than I've done in my entire life. I'm closer to being a newbie than they are, though, so maybe my experience at learning all these things is worth sharing. Chris, perhaps I'm getting too laid-back in old age, and laudable as the aims of your 'civilisation' are I don't think I have the energy (or brainpower) "to strive, to seek . . ." etc. It does seem a pity that conflict is the inevitable outcome of a new improved way of life. I don't suppose you will want to join me on my small but friendly Pacific Island . . . and for you all from the US who may be rather bothered by the idea of 'collective ownership' and obviously set great store on keeping thieving hands off your own property, I only had in mind sharing the frisbee and the tarp (against those tsunamis). Luckily my own toothbrush was in some deep pocket at the time of the End-of-the-World-as-we-Know-it. There are limits to sharing . . . although I would welcome Carolyn and her soap; eating all that pork makes the mitts a tad greasy. And Dyno, I'm sure there must be a role for lawyers . . .what did the 'ancient' members of your profession do when it first came into being? toxcrusadr - I am a big advocate of going "paperless". Everything I have found has been saved on Dropbox, so if my computer crashes, it will still be there. I am really paranoid about that so I also have a Carbonite Subscription. And yes, I plan to leave any info I find. bulldinkie - Good idea about checking with the courthouse. The house is in Maryland, not far from Antietam. There is a large boulder in the basement (I guess they got tired of breaking up rocks as then dug). And I mean large.. like a VW Bug. I try to imagine what it must have been like for that family living there during the battle. It must have been very loud. If they didn't flee, I would be she was huddling down there by the boulder with the kids. I have traced the deed back as far as I could. Maryland has access online, but those don't have actual signatures on them. But the clerk of the court had beautiful (but hard to read) handwriting. I did find this 1853 newspaper ad that I am 99% sure this was for the house. The person who ran the ad owned all four houses on that side of the street. And the original section (log) of our house is about that size. In 1860 the a family was living in the house but did not own it. They bought it in 1865. Not sure what an "ordinary" size family is back then, but in 1860 they had 6 kids ranging from Age 15 to a 1 year old. Yikes in that tiny house with no bathroom, and no kitchen.

The county clerk hadn't gotten around to change the decorations on the tree to valentines. She changes it for every holiday, but she had been out ill.

Some of you might remember my post about the situation I encountered with Olive Garden and how they responded? Anyway, that's where we held our reception. Both George's daughters, grand daughter, great-grand daughter, two of our oldest friends (who were also our witnesses) one other dear friend and our State Senator and State Representative attended.

We were planning on paying for the whole thing, but George's devious daughter's hi-jacked the waitress on the way on and told her NOT to give us the bill. Talk about surprised!

Yep, what to wear?! Hey, how about a brand new suit? My old one (older then we'd been together) had finally started to come apart.

Will get some more posted soon.

SecSteve...you've surprised the socks off of me. I read postings and I get an "idea" of how I think people look. Well, dear heart, from your posts that I've read I had you envisioned as an early 30s, geeky-type, and very cosmopolitan, just past the skateboarding phase. LOL!

At least I did get the "very handsome and dapper" part correct; I'll just have to adjust the age to "late 30s!"

Do post more photos, and again, congratulations!

The girls consider me their "Step Fairy Father" which always gets a laugh. George and I were both overwhelmed when we found out what they had done.

Caroline, you made my day! George considers me geeky as he doesn't half understand the computer stuff I do.

Can I just continue posting pictures on this thread or should I just do another one with more pics?
