A smaller percentage of spending goes for food today than at any time in the past. Consumers have put more emphasis on price than quality in the past few decades. That, in my view, is what's responsible for our having poor quality and frequently contaminated (and recalled) food items in our stores today.

Back when cracker packages were snug in that container, they cost more of your income than they do today. We get what we want to pay for, and nothing more.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying Snidely, but I sure get sticker shock every time I go to the grocery store. We really try to remember the average cost of items to comparison shop-----we were at the market on Sat.

We went to the store on Sunday and the cost of the produce was more than it was last week. Napa cabbage has been 87/lb for as long as I remember and it's now $1.47/lb.
Brussels sprouts were $2.49 (that's expensive and I miss eating them). They're now $3.29. English cucumbers were always 75c each, now they're over $1 each

Hopefully, jasdip, to whatever point in your past you're price comparing to, your income has gone up more than food prices have. If not, that's another story.

Part of this is because more people worldwide are able to afford more than subsistence diets. Demand has increased and labor is paid more. We've had it good for a long time. "One World" pinches!

One thing I have also noticed is that since the price has gone up, they put fewer items in a bag so that you still get a lot of bags in your cart...you feel like you are still getting a lot for your money....They used to load my bags down so heavy I complained about it, now I don't have to complain any more...

Another thing I noticed with crackers, maybe a year or more ago, the "holes" in the centers of the crackers are much larger than they used to be. Smaller cracker size overall, with larger holes punching out the centers.

Ticks me off. Keep them the same size; raise the price, but don't try to dupe me like I'm too stupid to see the products are smaller and smaller.

Yogurt ... and ice cream ... shrinking number of grams/oz. per pack. We used to get several 175 gram cups of yogurt in a sleeve of a dozen or so, and when I called the 800 number and complained about the shrinking, the guy said that they were still available, that I could still buy them ... but as individual cups (expensive), no longer in sleeves.

They tell you how many rolls in a package of toilet paper ... but have you seen any that offer the number of sheets per roll, recently? The size of those rolls has shrunk, as well.

I bought some Blackdiamond cheese yesterday, it used to weigh 500 grams now it is 469 grams but still the same price.

Enjoyingspring, we noticed in our sale fliers this week that the Black Diamond is 400 grams. Anything we've noticed shrinking in price is a significant amount, generally 25%. Bacon is now 375 grams from 500 grams (not that we buy bacon, but that's the new size).

For a long time now Schneiders mini sizzlers which used to have 16 sausages, now have 10.

Evaluate paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, etc.) by the square footage, not the 'roll' or number of sheets per roll. Kirkland's is my standby for T.P. There's more square footage in a package; the width of the roll is wider; there's no jumbo diameter cardboard roll; the paper is sturdy without being harsh. My guess is that it is a loss leader, as paper goods are in the far back corner of the store.

Chisue, you are bang on. Square footage AND Kirkland. It might cost a bit more to buy it initially, but you get far more bang for your buck.

We also like the Cascades brand at Costco. It's recycled paper, and you get 40 rolls in a package. They don't always carry it, when it used to be regularly stocked. They often have $3 off coupons, and the last time we were at Costco, they had it, so we bought 2 packages.
