I went to Amazon.com to check it out, but to me their reviews are a zoo. Some appear to me to be paid reviews for or against, it is getting more difficult to pick out genuine responses as the paid responses get more sophisticated.

I never heard of it, but the ingredients sound pleasant, at least. It's rather pricey, but so is the Topricin that I've had good luck with. Topricin is a homeopathic product, and I heard many first-hand testimonials before I bought it.

A friend swears by a Chinese oil, but it didn't do a thing for me. Must depend a lot on the person and the condition.

This stuff is a cosmetic-like preparation sold by a small company out of a warehouse. The main retail points shown on its website are mostly feed stores and hardware stores in rural areas.

It's not "you can't prove it doesn't help" but rather the opposite. When there's no proof of effectiveness, one must assume something is ineffective. If they had valid evidence of effectiveness, they'd most certainly trumpet that.

Since you asked, Snidely, my definition of snake oil is something Big Pharma pays their sales force megabucks to aggressively market to physicians, who in some cases receive gifts (like a cruise, maybe) for prescribing it to their patients.

Bear in mind I'm not talking about all physicians by any means. Many, including my own, would not get sucked into that corrupt process. But some do. And yup, snake oil.

And by the way, I would not automatically distrust a small company selling mostly to rural areas. I live in a rural area, and I have more confidence in small companies striving to produce ecologically-sound products than I do in Monsanto, for example.

You know what the term means - it's used to describe pseudo-medicinal products, or similar things, that are falsely (and often fraudulently) promoted as providing relief or a cure for a particular problem. It's no different than a lie or a scam, things referred to as "snake oil" are unproven and undemonstrated. Such promoters prey on the gullibility and desperation of others, it's really sad. And nothing new.

These products are unregulated, uninspected, uncontrolled, and take advantage of sincere but sometimes desperate people.

Big Pharma uses marketing and sales tactics that are very aggressive and sometimes unwarranted. But there's a HUGE difference - no pharmaceutical can be sold or distributed until effectiveness and safety are demonstrated. The approval process is a trade-off of time demands and safety/effectiveness concerns. They don't always get it right. But that's different from never getting it right.

This stuff and stuff like it is garbage, a waste of time and money. If you find that buying human medical treatments at mostly at rural hardware and feed stores to be an endorsement of credibility, then go for it. Most wouldn't agree with you.
