If you're divorced, did you know....?

I was sharing this with a friend the other day and thought some here may not know. If you're divorced and have not remarried, you may can claim some of your ex's social security. If you have not remarried, were married 10 years or longer, are 62 or older, check out the attached link from the Social Security Administration.

Years ago a friend of mine was in the process of divorcing...Her ex had a very clever lawyer, had the papers drawn up and she, thinking, get it over quickly, she signed the papers....The divorce was final just a couple of weeks before their 10th wedding anniversary and she was out, not able to collect part of his SS...

That is a funny story, David and represents very well how different the non gardener views the gardener. (g) I did want to say about the aphid/ladybug deal, that because I garden organically, I normally take the approach to let things work themselves out in the garden as often as I can, and when I see aphids, I automatically think, 'Oh good, I have a lure for ladybugs now.' :-) And that is exactly what happened in my garden. I rarely see an aphid and when I do, a week later, I don't see them any more. I was pretty excited to see lady bugs plural this year, interested in our Asparagus foliage. So I am hoping that this may be some sort of habitat for them. Of course, I have to have enough aphids to feed them, if that is how many they can eat in a day!

hey even with trees... each has its own season .... when it is in full glory .... and i treasure them.. FOR THAT SEASON .... IMHO .... the tri color's season .... is spring and early summer ... mine ALWAYS starts looking ratty in late august ... by which time.. i either have... other things to look at... or just dont care ... and mine has been in the ground for 10 years ... short of every single leaf turning brown and falling off.. i wouldnt worry about it .. yours is younger.. so extra water wont hurt... but i wouldnt worry about it too much .. as to the others.. are you sure a gallon of water is worth the effort???? ... if you have 7 trees .... e.g. .... i might prefer you gave one tree all 7 gallons one night .. and a different tree the 7, each day of the week .. rather than giving them all a little bit.. all depending on your soil, etc .... it is better to water DEEPLY and infrequently.. rather than otherwise .... sounds like you have a great collection going.. keep up the good work ... ken

My ex wore his ring to work one day- a no no for plumbers- and he thinks it fell down the drain in the back of Safeway. Whatever. I gave my band that matched his to my bro. They disliked each other so bro and I thought it would be funny. Bro used it to go to bars in San Fran. He would use it if creepy guys tried to hit on him. He lost it after putting it in the pocket of his Member's Only coat. Yes it was 1986. I kept the engagement ring and took the 1/4 stone out and some emeralds from an antique ring I purchased while married and on my 21st birthday made myself a ring to celebrate my divorce. I still wear it and my dh of 20 years does not care. I still have the setting and was told it would be worth not a lot because it was a mix of white and yellow gold. My husband was married before also. His ring cracked just after he learned she was having an affair with one of his old friends from school. We still have it. I could probably take the two, along with my gold crown I had removed and make at least a few dollars, ya think? I did keep one item and still have it. For our first anniversary I went to an antique store and purchased an Elgin 5 ruby pocketwatch guts and had it set into a gold case. It was really cool. I had engraved "for all of time" on the back. He never really appreciated it or me so I kept it when I left him. He understood. I paid $50 and had to save every dime to buy it. He gave me a little heart ring with a chip in it. I still have it too. Thought of giving it to my dd but I think I would rather sell it and buy her something else. I took watch to an appraisal show in town a few years ago. They told me it was worth about $300 and that they would buy it but really suggested I hang onto it as it would appreciate a lot. Even if I sold the case separate from the guts, the guts were pretty unique. They said it was still valuable even with the engraving. I still have it and will probably get around to selling it. Should take it in again just to see. There are not a lot of master watchmakers around these days but there are a few in town that are reputable.

I have five kids (eldest is almost 12, youngest is almost 2) -- they are fantastic, incredible, wonderful creatures :-) We have four sons and a daughter, and our home is filled with the sounds of giggling and arguing and jumping and running and chitter-chatter. My husband and I go to bed every night thanking one another for the family we have. The first two boys (26 months apart) each arrived 11 weeks preterm (29 weeks' gestation) and required months of hospitalization in the NICU, including multiple surgeries, ambulance rides and long nights of wondering if they'd survive until morning. They finally became healthy little toddlers and I had my tubes tied, thinking there was no way I could bear to bring another baby into a terrifying scenario like that again. Time passed, and the yearning got only stronger for more children...I discovered the source of my obstetric problems (a congential gynecological defect) and underwent a grueling seven-hour surgery to repair my tubes and correct my dysfunctional anatomy. Went on to have three more scrumptious kids and now I have five healthy, gorgeous children. It's exhausting, yes. It sometimes causes a bit of financial juggling (I'm a SAHM). The volume in my house is often very high with clamors for my attention or frustrations among the siblings, but it's nothing compared to the joy of hearing them laugh uncontrollably during an afternoon of goofing off as a family. I don't worry about the teenage years -- we've done our best to lay the groundwork to raise our kids with enormous self-respect and self-esteem. They'll make mistakes, I'm sure of it, but hopefully they'll return to their core values and continue to grow into fine adults. Until then, we have years of baking cookies, chasing the dog around the backyard, monitoring homework and tidying up mountains of Hot Wheels and multi-colored wooden blocks with these sweet, funny little kids we're so lucky to call our own. It's all good. Create the family you want, and then pour your heart and soul into enjoying your blessings. If you already feel sad about *no more babies, ever* and the vasectomy hasn't even happened yet, you're clearly not ready to move on -- you'll know in your heart which path is right for you and your family. I'ts a choice depending upon your own SS. You can do this, but only 50% of their full SS. I made more than my ex, although retired when 55. He is still working, I would only get a quarter of what I receive on my own. Be sure you check on both options.

Sunny DJ, your friend's ex was a real jerk. The money she would have got as a divorced wife comes out of the General Social Security fund, not directly from her husband, he would not get one cent less if she had collected. No wonder they got divorced! If his lawyer was really "smart" he would have waited and let her collect ex-wifes benefits and arranged to have her support or alimony lowered by that amount.

I knew it, but didn't even consider it. My husband made way more than he did.

Jannie, there are a lot of jerks out there. My husband retired from a very large well known company. He wanted me to go with him to sign his papers. I did and the lady explained that if he would give up $100 of his pension a month I could draw if I out lived him. My husband didn't even hesitate to say yes. When we got ready to leave she said, "do you know how lucky you are? Most husbands come in here with their papers already signed". I draw almost $900 a month and their wives would get nothing.

Our neighbor retired from a large company at 65. He signed papers wherein he agreed to take less from his company's pension (amount wasn't mentioned) so his wife would be protected by his pension at his death. At that point, he was about 8 years older than his wife.

In this case, the bet went against him as she died of liver cancer at age 73, and he went on to live totally on his own to age 93, when he died from a heart attack.

Emma,

I pay survivor benefits, to be able to continue to get a share of his military pension once he dies. Otherwise, I would get nothing and the "new wife" would get it all.

I don't understand the military benefits. My sister's husband was an officer in the navy and she didn't get anything. I wonder why one wife gets it and another doesn't, unless of course they paid into it. Like my sis and the "new wife". When my husband signed up and was told I would get the pension, I jokingly said "what if we get a divorce later?" She said, "you still get it". Love that company.
