Yet even MORE bad news

DH had a CT scan on Monday. His primary Dr. (not the oncologist) called yesterday with the results. His cancer has spread to the lung. We have an appt. with oncologist next week, I'm sure to discuss treatment. This also knocks him out to be on the transplant list. Prayers, prayers, prayers. Not sure how much more I can take!!!

Jamie, I'm so sorry you got even more bad news. I don't know how you do it. Definitely praying for your DH and you. Try to stay strong, and take care of yourself.

-call your local permit office and ASK if a permit is/was needed. Better to know in advance. anytime they say one isn't needed, call and ask for yourself. You will be the one to suffer if it is needed and isn't pulled. also - many gcs/subs will tell you lots of things that aren't true. If suspicious (and be suspicious) ask someone else (not working on your house at the time), google it. don't think that just because you aren't changing the 'footprint' that you don't need a permit - that's not true. I know a bit more about cars than most women but I always act like I haven't the faintest clue. And I always require any changed out parts to be given to me. That way if I do have a question about if that part needed changed, I have the old part to look at or take to another mechanic. My old mechanic from my early yrs (a family friend) taught me to do that - and I always hung out with him when he worked on my car. I loved hanging out under the car or hood with him - lol!

Our contractor filed a lien and he's not even done yet!

Is this illegal? I mean, how can he do this? Does he indeed have to be finished with the job before he can file a lien for nonpayment? This job was supposed to take 6 months and we started back in Jan 2006. We have never said "we are not paying you" or anything. We simply want the things that need to be fixed done right. He keeps saying this is warranty work and he deserves the full payment now. In our eyes, if we paid them all of it, then he would take forever. We have to hold this money over his head or the work won't get done. Now he put a lien on the house like we are not willing to work with him. UGH! Am I right this is not to be considered warranty work when he is still on the job finishing punch out stuff? To me, warranty is something after the job is completed and paid in full. Putting a deck on top of a septic should not be considered warranty work. My thought is he is trying to word it as warranty work because then he can say the job was complete. Sandy

Okay, the whole KD thing is its own problem. There are KD's, some of whom are even part of this forum, who are qualified, professional designers, but there are "certified kitchen designers" who don't have any design training and really are, basically, order takers. The certification is by the company, not by ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) or any other such thing. I've had a lot of design training, and have worked as a designer in various capacities, but I am very careful not to call myself a "designer" because I feel that that implies a level of qualification I do not have. This is my feeling about it, and respect for those who are qualified ID's, not any legal distinction. There are some laws in some places that restrict who can call themselves designers, which have been pushed by the industry, but the word is just an English word, and it's very hard to restrict its use. I remember seeing a proposal for one of these laws that excepted Kitchen Designers because there was no way to get it past the big box stores' lobbyists without. So, yes, unfortunately, it's falling to you to suss out the details of the design and hold the guy's toes to the fire, but this doesn't tell us if he's a good contractor. He might be. He might not realize that whatever course he took to be a KD isn't what you thought he meant when he said he was one. All that said, if you're just not comfortable with the guy, you can cancel the contract. If it's already cost you big bucks in overruns I think you have cause (not a legal opinion, just sense). Rather than pulling the plug out of hand, you might offer to have him sign an addendum to the contract saying that you're willing to absorb $X of the overrun, but that he's responsible for everything above that. And if he doesn't want to sign that, offer to dissolve the contract. Even if you're on the hook for the cabinets (which you might not be if the order was just put in), you can still have someone else do the actual work. But he might be fine, if you give him a chance!! Why not start by inviting him over for coffee and danish (most contractors love sweets) and tell him every one of your concerns and hash them through. Start with your expectations about the details and how nervous he's making you. Get him to tell you how he's going to handle everything else that comes up. He might be a really good contractor but a lousy cabinet orderer. :) Good luck!!

No hurry to prune anything. When you do, just the crossed branches and damaged ones. You could take that mess of water sprouts coming off the lower main branches. After the tree flowers would be better than now and the tree is still pretty small so the wounds should close quickly. From the pics I'd bet it's a sliver but will need more info to say for certain.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Cancer seems to be more prevalent all the time. I wish a cure or even better, a way to prevent this awful disease.

Prayers and hugs for you and your family. One day at a time that is what my DD did and is doing regarding the massive stroke her husband had. There is so much avaiable for cancer now. Will keep you and your family in our prayers. Both DH and DD (other one) have cancer.

There just aren't any words. You've been through so, so much. I guess you just have to trust the doctors and trust in the Man above. There have been breakthroughs in lung cancer lately, so I'm praying one of them will work for your husband. Hugs to you both!

Jamie, I've been feeling sorry for myself all day, so your post gave me the kick in the rear to know I have nothing to complain about. Not that it helps, but for that I'm grateful.
