Summer Weather

Well, this has been the summer from hell, far as I'm concerned.

Normally, in my area, southwestern Ontario, we get 7 or 8 days of heat where the temperature is over 30C. And they don't usually last more than a couple of days in a row.

So far we've had 21 days, broken heat records, where it lasts a week or 2 in a row. And with our heat, it's always humid. We don't have "dry heat".

And no rain. I feel so bad for the animals and birds, and of course the farmers! How about people on wells? They have to notice that the water is low, and be careful.

I only hope that August gets cooler, normal temps.

I can only imagine, but then probably not, what our food costs are going to be.

I feel your pain Jasdip! Here in MN, we have been running temperatures 90 or above with high humidity throughout the end of June and all of July so far. The only thing different is that we are one of the few areas of the country not in drought: in fact, it is pouring rain right now. The rain just increases the humidity, however. This is a totally miserable summer and I cannot wait for fall/winter!

Daisy, I only had rust once in my garden, and that was a year when it rained pretty steadily from mid-May through mid-June. 'Zephirine Drouhin' got the most tremendous case of rust, defoliated, grew new leaves in the now-dry summer, and that was that. We have no rust this year and mildew is at about normal levels. So we've been luckier than you, enjoying the benefits of increase rain without suffering any of the drawbacks. The spring certainly was wretched. We've been in Italy since spring 2000, and this is the first year we've had such a mild and moist summer. Local knowledge is probably correct about 'Felicia', but it doesn't hurt to have one's own opinion. Of all my Hybrid Musks this is the least prosperous, although no plant of it grows down in the shade garden where the Hybrid Musks do so well. So it hasn't really had a fair trial in my garden. It sure does smell good. Perhaps I ought to look into finding a place for a plant of it down there. Laura, I'm glad you enjoyed my post, and were inspired to look up some roses! I got so caught up in my own eloquence that I forgot to add that I wanted other gardeners to write in about roses in their gardens: varieties that aren't terribly well known and that they've fallen in love with or are feeling particularly enthusiastic about. Terry- you must have been watching the same news as I was at about the same time yesterday, I was thinking the same thing as it was announced that Alberta..... had the best weather in Canada, then went into other news about the flooding in Europe. The weather this summer has been, well, I am almost at the point where I don't know what to call it but not quite. Crappy is the word. In the last couple of weeks we've been waiting for a few decent days to go into the mountains and that simply hasn't happened. We have two school-aged boys and now the time is **** near out, in terms of time to go. I'm not clutching at straws and wondering if we will have to try to go on the long weekend if the weather is better and wouldn't that be a joy. Everyone and their dog....and kids will be trying to go that weekend if the weather is good. All I can say is it's a good thing we aren't planning on going swimming whenever we go. I went off on a bit of a rant there. It's true Sharon that for some tree seedlings etc., there couldn't have been a better year. Also, for moving plants at almost anytime this summer, it was good. I'm afraid I didn't take enough advantage of that. I could have moved quite a few things that I've been thinking just weren't in the right place. Not plants in full bloom, but a few smaller plants that I think would have transplanted well. Now that it's so rainy, I'm not in the mood! We have the furnace turned on here too. Not that it has never happened before, but turning it on several days in a row in August is another thing. I'm just glad we got our haying done before this latest downpour! Faith

Hi Dawn, Amber took bronze in floor, gold in bars, beam, and the All Round. The team brought home the 1st place trophy. They won by about 4 points. In gymnastics scoring, that would qualify as total domination. Each girl that went took brought home a Gold, Solver, or Bronze in the All Round. Here are a few pics stitched together from around Colorado Springs. Too much snow on the highway going into to the mountains for us prairie dwellers. I am so ready for spring. When we left Oklahoma Friday it was spitting a little snow. When we left Denver yesterday afternoon it was spitting snow. Get up this morning it's raining and cold. It sounded like it rained off and on here after midnight. Hope you get some. randy

Dawn thanks. There are times when you wonder if it is worth it. I had 9 seeds of a scarce variety of bean. I planted them in a bed that I had left mulch on for the last few years. Pulled it back and planted. But left a little old mulch close by. Of the first 3 that sprouted something ate 2/3 of the way through 2 stems and ate the leaves of the 3rd one. So cleaned the mulch away. Had five plants last night. Thought they should be wet enough to make it through the day. By the time I got home all but one looked bad. Two of them revived after I watered them well. Hopefully I can save the 3 to build seed from. Then after dark I decided to fix spaghetti. I went out to the garden and pulled two volunteer garlic plants. Not the biggest of the volunteer plants but 2 which I would have to remove before long. One had a scape. I also pulled 5 onions that are just starting to bulb. I cut them up and put them in the spaghetti sauce. And then I remembered why I garden. The best sauce I've had for almost a year. Nothing like the flavor of fresh garlic and onions. I noticed this evening they are saying 86 tomorrow but have raised the 88 for Friday to 96. Hopefully it won't get that hot. Everything made it through the day except the 2 beans I mentioned above. But know the plants are stressing some although they don't show it yet. I probably wouldn't have fed the tomatoes any N if I hadn't steamed the leaves off some in the WOW's and felt I needed to grow some foliage back. The wind is blowing hard now. Jay

I'm in Long Island NY. We've been too hot and not enough rain. I've been watering my vegetable garden nearly every day. I planted 3 lilac bushes this spring. One looks steressed. So I've been putting a dripping hose on it 2-3 hours a day. Hubby and I mostly stay indoors in the air conditioning.

Yes, it has been a hot and dry season this year. Our weather is about like yours Jasdip. We did get some more rain over night and more probably sometime today. We have a very large garden and have tried to water it as much as we can and for the most part things are doing pretty well. Thankfully we have a deep well. Being hot out has not stopped us from going about and doing our work here. We may not get as much done but we try :)

Our water rates are very high, so no one waters their lawn. Mine is crisp, except where the sprinkler over passes the flower beds....there it is thick and needs a good mowing right now! Yes, hot days in Minnesota are a real stinker.

Ditto here. This is truly the summer from hell. It's way over 90 now and very humid. For way over a month, every day but two have been over 90 and two over 100. Dry with an occasional shower which always misses us. I can't wait till it's over: there's only five weeks to get thru.

My sister saw a baby deer collapse in her field and die last week. The poor birds can't even get a worm out of the ground here in southern and central Illinois.

Many of our farmers don't remember it ever being this bad.

Our summer is about the same as last..hot,hazy and humid. We have reached 103 only twice though and that is more than enough for me. It is a little cooler here today following a brief shower. For that I am thankful. :) Our grass is beginning to dry out some, but the flowers are doing well.

About a week from now, I expect to ne on the north shore of Lake Ontario (just east of Toronto) doing some genealogical research. (I'm the driver ferrying the person doing a search.) I hope to get a break from the heat. My friend discovered that one her ancestors came from Whitby, Ontario to New York state in the 1800s. She has traced that one from New York to Salt Lake, Utah and thense to Grand Junction, Colorado. He's the one who dug the first irrigation canal to Fruita and helped to establish fruit growing in that region. (In those days, the big river was called Grand and later its name was changed to Colorado.) Now, my friend is tracing back the other direction hoping to find his origin.
