It is called Night Blooming Cerius. This one was started from cuttings 5.5 years ago and has bloomed every Summer the last 4 years and it bloomed in December last year too! This season with over 100 buds just blows me away!

There are types that have flat stems as well. A friend of mine has one that climbs up the wall to a balcony above an atrium. Her house is L shaped and it is in the part where the L joins together. It grows up and across a wood railing. It is so beautiful...her house is adobe and it looks like something by Georgia O'Keefe.

Some varieties produce a big seed pod/fruit. That's called Dragon Fruit and it is very popular in Asian culture. They
slice it in shapes and use it to decorate cakes. Sliced, looks similar to Kiwi fruit...lots of little seeds.

Those pics are amazing! Congrats to you and DH - I'm sure there is some pretty hard work in nurturing something that turns out this well. Thanks for sharing.

Really beautiful!! I can see why everyone is impressed! Does it have a scent also? I too would love to see a photo in the day. Kind of looks like caterpillars climbing the trunk.

That's beautiful and i've seen a few here in Ca.I don't have any of that kind,but do have epiphyliums(sp) that the flowers are similar,but grow on the flat leaves/stems that someone else mentioned.

Does the cereus come in any color besides white??

I am glad ya'll enjoyed the pics. The cactus is called a Night Blooming Cereus I do not have the Latin name. It is growing 15 feet up a Cabbage Palm about 20 high and the scent is very mild and not appealing to most people (moths love it).
There are spines all over it (the plant not the blooms), tiny ones(near invisible) that hurt when they get in the skin. Kind of a rope looking green plant that spreads out roots to grasp the tree bark. The only beautiful thing is the flowers that bloom as it gets dark for one night only then wither as the sun comes up. The blooms drop off and if they were pollinated they will root and grow another plant more oft than not. I do like most cactus blooms andhave several kinds growing around the house. I was ill and I lost a lot of rare ones to a freeze a few years back but will get more some day. Cacti and succulents are so easy to grow in Central Florida but DH has a way with them that is amazing. I have never seen that many blooms open at once on any other N B Cereus ever. I will get a few pics in the day light and post them. UGLY and interesting are the words to describe the plant and wilting blooms. LOL

All that comes to mind is...... WOW!

Tanya, It is worth the sacrifice of many of the "northern" flowers to have such awesome blossoms. The only flower I really miss is the Lilacs. I would give up one of the multitude of tantalizingly beautiful tropical flowers for a small Lilac bush and the heavenly scent even for just a day or so. I found I can get tulips to grow and thrive if I keep them potted and put the pot in the walk-in fridge for a few months of the "winter" here. Not an ideal way but my friend has a walk-in and allows me the space so I can give his Mom fresh tulips every year.

There was a bloom last night bigger than a basketball. I wanted to get a pic but I wasn't taking the camera out in the rain. I'm to clumsy to hold umbrella and camera and flashlight all at the same time and with my luck the most expensive thing would get ruined. I've managed to destroy 4 digital cameras in just a few years I am being extra careful with this one. LOL Hopefully there will be another photo op before the last buds bloom.

Where do you live, what climate zone? I have several of these in pots - would they survive outdoors in zone 8b-9a?

kayjones, I'm in 9z. The cactus has survived low temps and a few hard freezes for a few hrs without a lot of loss. I think it would grow well in a sheltered sunny area in your zone.

In my yard, sunny and sheltered aren't available - it's either full sun or deep shade. I might try it on the southeast side of the house, but it's mostly shade.

kayjones You would probably want to put it in full sun and then cover it with a blanket or something during a hard freeze. They grow quickly when they have something to climb and are continualy pointed in the direction of the climbing base. DH diddles with this cactus every few days or it would be going in every ocnceivable direction.

I do love the plant and am very proud of the DH for his dedicated care of it.
