My Poor Furbaby!!!!

It's amazing how an accident can happen in the blink of an eye. I was sitting last night (at 9:00 pm) working on my stitch and put it down for 1 second. I turned around and Myben got ahold of my needle and thread. Before I could grab her she swallowed it.

Called the vet and had to take her to the emergency vet 20 minutes from my house. Got there and they took an xray and the needle was in her stomach. Luck would have it that she had just eaten and the food was coating the needle. They had to remove it but couldn't do it at that facility so I had to drive 30 minutes to a different place.

Got there and they said they could use a scope thing with a camera and pinchers to get the needle. By this time it was 11 pm and they said it would take about 4 hours. While I waited I went out to my car to get my smokes and locked my keys in the car. It took several minutes to find my spare key only after I dropped my purse in the parking lot and everything spilled out.

They were keeping Myben overnight so I headed home and I pulled into my lot from another entrance. I was so tired that I didn't realize I was at the wrong building and could get in. Drove around lot until I found my building.

Didn't get to bed until after midnight and had to get up for work at 5:00 am.

Picked up Myben after work and she is fine...no complications.

Scary how something can happen so fast.

I won't even tell you what the bill cost me but YIKES!!!! Even though she is worth every penny

Oh my goodness!! I'm so glad this had a happy ending. Your poor baby!!

I have been to the emergency vet several times, so I know what you are talking about! My animals always seem to come down with something during the night or on weekends when my vet office isn't open.

Again, I am so glad Myben was ok. That had to be a major scare!!

So glad everything turned out so well. Georgy is almost 5 now and one would think she would have outgrown getting into trouble but she hasn't. Anything that drops on the floor goes into her mouth. To this day when I say "I have to get dressed now, she jumps up and follows me to the bedroom area. It all started because I couldn't let her out of my sight. I do not leave her unattended because I don't want her ingesting something bad. When she was just a few months old, she helped herself to 3 1/2 dozen oatmeal raisin cookies that were sitting on the counter. Raisins are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. Fortunately, she threw it all up, but I still had several hundred dollars in vet bills. I'm sure yours was a lot more!

Thanks Kristi! I was so excited to buy my Amaryllis bulb and was so worried today when it turned red. I actually dug it back up and put it in a pot to keep inside just to keep it safe. =) I am from South Carolina...I think a zone 7. Where are you living? My mom gave me an Amaryllis a couple of years ago. It bloomed the first year and was gorgeous! It didn't bloom this year tho. I kept it inside both years. So is my Amaryllis okay????

Thanks everyone. When I got home last night Dusty greeted me at the door and was rubbing his face on my legs. He has antibiotics to take once a day but at least we can put it in his food. Similar thing with my DD.. They dated 3 years, talked about getting married. He was in grad school 2 hours away. She was working full time and in grad school (6 hours from us). It was abrupt and in the middle of her huge Capstone-like project. Fortunately, like your DD, her friends rallied around her. She can't be totally sure, but she thinks he had reconnected with someone he dated previously. Well, it didn't last because two months later he was texting and facebooking DD's friends asking about her. This went on for a few months. She finally received a text from his SIL saying he missed her and wanted to talk to her. She replied " he knows where to find me." He emailed saying he broke up because wasn't sure what he wanted, yadda yadda. Her answer..." Thanks for clarifying" and that was it. I was so proud of her for not going back with him, and we really liked him and thought they were a good match. She's been seeing someone the last few months but seemed a little ambivalent about the relationship. I advised her not to date just to have someone around and she said " don't worry mom, if I don't see potential I let 'em go." It will take time but your DD will be just fine.

So so sorry to hear of your loss. Yeah, the older I get the harder it is.... and I think also the older the cat, the harder it is. .... Just because the bonds are that much stronger ... you've shared so much. Sure they've lived a long happy life, but that doesnt necessarily translate into it being easier to accept. In fact the opposite. I lost my old girl (22 y.o.) a few yrs back and its still hard to think of her without pangs of missing her. Do cry, as hard and as often as you need to - its nature's way of releasing stress hormones. And make no mistake, this is a major loss in anyone's book. In time the sharp painful edges of the grief will soften. One thing that's always helped me is to write your cat's biography now while its still fresh - every little detail, how he came into your life, funny stories, quirks, the sound of his meow, everything.... maybe even read it aloud to your friends/relations. It helps to honor him, which helps with the grief... and also Ive found that when I read these stories years later, Im so glad I wrote them down because otherwise I surely would have forgotten.

The EXACT thing happened to my little Gizmo...........his had already made it's way down to the intestine. I always joked, that while he was free (stray), he sure didn't stay that way. Same for my other two fur babies, Rex, and Jazz......they were worth it for sure, though. I still miss them all very very much.

So sorry you had to go through this, and glad your kitty is doing well. It happened to me too - Finnegan started to swallow an entire skein of DMC floss, but I caught him quick enough that I was able to pull it out before too much went down.

I see photos of cats on the Facebook cross stitch groups all the time and people think it's so cute when kitty cuddles up to all the loose threads.

They can be so quick!!

Imagine if you were away at work when it happened.

I had one cat that ate tinsel of the Christmas tree (20 years ago). Fortunately she passed it.

Nasty accident! Glad your cat is OK.

Our vet (before we moved) was once featured on the cover of MONEY magazine! It's a long, hard road to become a vet, but it is a booming business -- at least in a 'small animal' practice.

So sorry this happened, I know what your vet bill was because I had a similar experience with my Dusty. A pop up timer from a leg of lamb fell on the floor while carving, and he was of course right there and swallowed it. I saw it happen and grabbed him and tried to get it out of his mouth but I just missed him. Ended up having surgery to get it out of his stomach because it was too big to pass. Everything turned out fine except my pocket book!

Thanks. She's still a little tired from the ordeal just like I am. Took a lot of energy and coffee to keep me awake at work yesterday. We both took a long 3 hour nap today. But she is a little active which I am happy about. I'm sure in a few days she will be back to normal.

BTW.....$350 for first visit and xrays
other vet.....$1600 for everything else.

OMG! I sew and never thought of THAT happening.....of course I'm a new cat owner...
