Daughter With Cancer.

Our daughter, Stacey, had her double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery yesterday. She had to be at the hospital at 8 with surgery starting at 10:30. Her mastomacy took 3 1/2 hours. She then went right into her reconstruction phase. We finally got word around 6 that all was finished and she was doing well. We finally got to see her around 7. The surgeon told us he was 95% sure her lymph nodes were free of cancer. Wonderful news. They will know on Friday the lab results. They sent her home at 8 this morning. Insurance would only pay for 23 hours. I have talked to her 3 times today and she is doing really well. God is truly good!!

Being in Zone 5 I have little knowledge of what would work for you. I would have recommended the Pink Pampas as you said, but I'm not too sure what would make it in your Zone. Sounds like a lovely tribute for your cousin's daughter...I'm sorry to hear about their loss. Pink Muhly Grass is hardy to Zone 6 but if you protect it somewhat it might very well work for you. Glenda, you are a kind soul. I have traveled down the colon cancer road. When diagnosed at age 48, I first completed 28 days of chemo/radiation then had my surgery to remove the tumor. After that, I had 12 chemotherapy treatments (one every two weeks- lasting 6 months). This is probably what your friend is having it is called Folflox6. I would be at the infusion center for about 4 hours and then went home with a chemo pack that I had to be connected to for 42 hours. A visiting nurse would come to my home and disconnect that chemo pack from me. If your friend is on the same chemo medication, she may have sensitivity to cold. Drinking a cold beverage was like razor blades. This lasted from treatment until about day 4 afterwards. Even touching something cold from the refrigerator was painful. Room temperature was key for foods and beverages during this period. As your friend progresses through treatment, she may experience pain walking and sore hands/feet. This is another side effect of the medication. At about treatment 6, I would get difficult shin splint pain. For me, the day I was disconnected from my take-home chemo pack was when I would crash needing much rest. Fortunately, I didnÃ¢ÂÂt experience severe nausea as they had good medicine to help with that. I did have mouth sores and if she experiences this, have her request prescription mouth wash. Also, the taste buds go after about 3 treatments. I never liked spicy food but would crave it as it had a Ã¢ÂÂtasteÃ¢ÂÂ. I found cravings for foods with strong flavors. (I know you are a good cook). Chemo is difficult. I had treatments, surgery and a temporary ostomy too. My final chemo treatment was in April 2012 and my ostomy reversed in July 2012. Yesterday, I had my port removed two years from starting this cancer journey. I kept my port for this past year, as they monitored me frequently for any recurrence of the disease. Luckily, I am currently cancer free. Tell your dear friend there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I am sorry for your loss. Alzheimer's is a cruel disease. My Mom didn't become agressive but she did lose her sense of modesty and my Mom was such a modest person. My Mom also lost her ability to speak except for the odd song lyric when I would sing to her and to say goodnight to a picture of George Clooney on her mirror. My Mom though did speak volumes with her dark eyes. Your uncle is at peace now but I am sure the loss to your family is great. Anne

Colorcrazy, I think we should shorten your name to CC. What do you think? Do you paint or craft? We'd love to see your projects. Thanks so much for your sweet comments. I hadn't thought of the fact that it is a keepsake over like you say, plate of cookies until reading this tonight. Belle's comment was also nice. Sometimes we need to hear nice things from others to stay focused. For the last several years my DD and I have always made artifucal arrangements for funerals. We personalize them and have always had such nice compliments from families. We have had a few occasions where several want our arrangement and they come to us and ask who should get it. That's not good but most of the time it's been rewarding. I'll have to tell you a cute story. I lost a friend and we had made an arrangement for the service. I seen her husband a couple of months later and he said he had placed our arrangement in front of the big window facing their pond and had been watering it faithfully when another friend came by he was showing her how it still looked the same. She had to tell him it would never change and he best quit watering it or he might ruin it. He said they laughed so hard. He was laughing so much it was hard for him to tell me this story. That's everything you could hope for, isn't it? Wonderful news! As for the 23 hours, that sure doesn't seem long considering the major surgery she had, but maybe it is for the best because she will rest better at home. I'm very happy for you and your family, Susie.

So sorry your daughter and you are going through this. Glad the surgery went well and that she is recovering well. I know it is hard not to worry, but sending positive thoughts your way. The surgeons' initial impressions are very accurate these days.

23 hours seems ridiculous after that extensive surgery, but she is young and resilient and will be just fine. Take care of yourself too!

Excellent news, Susie! What a long day for you and your family. Good old insurance companies--23 hours! Not even a full day, for heaven's sake. But home is almost always better. I wish your daughter speedy healing.

Sadly, it's best to Get Out Of The Germ Factory! That does seem excessive speed after major surgery, though. It's terrible to have to go through this so young, but she will heal faster than some of us old ladies. I hope she has Visiting Nurse services.

Sending good wishers to your daughter and prayers for a speedy recovery...know that Our daughter is two years out from her surgery and is doing well so I hope your daughter does just as well...it is a life altering experience ...our daughter recently had an issue going on with her husband and he was upset about something and he couldn't understand why she wasn't upset and she looked at him and said...listen...I had both of my breast cut off and you expect me to be upset about something so trivial...I hope your daughter has the new outlook on life that our Suzanne has..it's actually made her a new and even more wonderful person...
